Real Spit: Raekwon isn't ready to be boxed in just yet. The 18-year rap vet, who started with Wu-Tang Clan in 1993, first became known for his multi-syllabic, kung fu-inspired rap style, but has since evolved sonically. Who could forget the Chef's mafia-themed crime sagas on his 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ...? Last year, Rae took things back to the block on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, and now he is looking to conquer the digital space with his latest mixtape, which he offered as a free download on New Year's Day.

"This mixtape right here is called Unexpected Victory. I call it the Unexpected because it's unexpected on what I'm gonna give y'all, and on top of it, it's gonna be victorious," the Chef explained to Mixtape Daily. "I feel good. I feel like I can take a dive in something and be professional with it and really watch it grow, and that's what I wanted to do with this mixtape right here."

The 17-track mix bangs from start to finish. Opening with a dramatic violin-laden instrumental, Rae launches into the slow-rolling, sophisticated "Just a Toast." Over the Mark Henry-produced gem, the Staten Island, New York, MC reminds listeners of his drug-laced street background as well as his prowess on the mic when he spits, "Powerful when giving coke out/ You know they call me Sugar Ray, the Chef, the G.O.A.T.'s out."

"A Pinebox Story" is another gem. Rae, a master storyteller, lays a murder mystery atop a soulful 9th Wonder production. He's great alone, but there, Lex Diamonds recruits plenty of lyrical assassins. His new artist JD Era rides shotgun on a number of tracks, while Mobb Deep, Capone, Noreaga, Vado, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Fred the Godson provide ample backup.

Busta Rhymes shows up on the lavishly laid "MTV Cribs." An ode to the good life, Rae and the Dungeon Dragon throw a nod to the classic MTV show while displaying their own brand of rich living. Raekwon's not-so-humble abode features a 360-degree spinning wall unit, a see-through refrigerator and a tub full of ice. Not to be outdone, Bussa Buss' castle boasts crystal chandeliers, an Alaskan polar bear rug and a casino in the basement, and a rare painting of Jean-Michel Basquiat feeding fruit to Madonna. Can't say we saw that one coming.

"It's called Unexpected because anything that I give y'all this time is gonna be unexpected," Rae said. "It's gonna be like, 'Oh sh--, he jumped into a new world, he jumped into a new chamber.' " As if we've never heard him before.

Raekwon Classic Debut Cuban Linx A 'Gift And A Curse'

For Raekwon, the success of his 1995 classic debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ..., is a double-edged sword. While the Wu-Tang Clansman celebrated and performed songs from his first album on Saturday at Rock the Bells in New York, he admitted to MTV News that sometimes the OB4CL admiration distracts from his other work.

"It is a gift and a curse, because sometimes people get stuck off of one style I got, and that's cool if that's what you love," Rae said backstage at Rock the Bells before he and Ghostface performed Cuban Linx ... for thousands of fans. "I mean, I wanna be loved regardless by the fans because they help me pay my bills and allow me to still be here, but as long as you know what I'm capable of."

The Chef got his start as a member of Wu-Tang Clan in 1993, but after dropping the much-celebrated Cuban Linx..., Raekwon was held as one of New York's biggest rap draws, right along with the Notorious B.I.G., Nas and Method Man. Since then, Rae dropped Immobilarity in 1999 and The Lex Diamond Story four years after that. In 2009, the Staten Island MC returned with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Pt. II, and last year he released his fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang. Still, having such highly regarded debut can be a lot to deal with at times.

"Of course I get tired of people dwelling on that, but at the same time, that's me, that made me a Martin Luther King rap n---a, that put me in a certain box. So if that's what you know me by, as long as you know me from the get-down side," he said. "Other than that, all I can do is keep climbing and keep growing and that's all I been doing."

In true Chef fashion, Raekwon used food to draw his perfect analogy, comparing his albums to prime cuts of meat. "Every now and then, it do feel like, 'Yo, check this out, leave that steak alone, that sirloin, and f--- with New York steak or this rib eye or somethin'."

On August 1, Rae celebrated the 16-year anniversary of the Purple Tape and spoke with RapFix about its impact. "I knew I had a classic when I formulated with these nine members in this group," he said of his camaraderie with the Wu. "Everything at that time that we was making, we was so sharp, it was supervisual already."

Nas, Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Thrill Fans At Rock The Bells

Mobb Deep, Slaughterhouse, Erykah Badu and more revisit classic material for a day of hip-hop celebration on New York stop.

NEW YORK — Thousands of rap fans gathered in hip-hop's birth city for a daylong celebration of the genre's classics. Nas, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all performed at the Rock the Bells 2011 festival on Governor's Island in New York City on Saturday (September 3).

The musical tour was comprised of four stages, including the main Rock the Bells stage, the Wu-inspired 36 Chambers stage and the underground-themed Paid Dues stage. More than 20 acts, including Mobb Deep, Slaughterhouse, Black Moon, Big K.R.I.T., the Immortal Technique and GZA, performed, with some dedicating their sets to their own classic albums; others devoted their shows to just a gang of fan-favorites.

The festivities kicked off at approximately 2 p.m. ET, and started off slow. Wu-Tang Clan's GZA fumbled through his 1995 sophomore album, Liquid Swords, as concertgoers ping-ponged back and forth between stages. Cypress Hill ran through selections from their Black Sunday LP. Marijuana anthems like "I Wanna Get High" and "Hits From the Bong" set the tone for a smoke-filled set that mixed equal parts rap, rock and Latin soul.

Mobb Deep didn't disappoint. Although they were advertised to perform only their 1995 breakout album, The Infamous, the Queens, New York, duo did so much more. In addition to tracks like "Shook Ones Pt. II," "Survival of the Fittest" and "Give Up the Goods," the Mobb dove into their catalog of street bangers, including "G.O.D. Pt. III" and "Quiet Storm," as well.

MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductee Big K.R.I.T. found his set overlapping with that of the Mobb's Havoc and Prodigy, but he was still able to draw a sizable crowd on the Paid Dues stage. The gatherers bounced energetically to Southern-fried selections like "Glass House" and "Country Sh--," proving that it wasn't just a day for rap veterans.

After drawing fan criticism about her previous live shows, Lauryn Hill promised at the beginning of her set to perform the songs from her The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album as they were recorded. Unfortunately, the plan was thrown out the window pretty quickly as she rapped to a ridiculously sped-up version of "Lost Ones." In fact, many of Ms. Hill's classics were performed quite differently from how fans may have remembered. Still, she did thrill audiences with almost-flawless renditions of "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "To Zion." There was also a Fugees reunion of sorts when Pras joined his former partner to rock "Ready or Not," but the warring Wyclef was nowhere to be found.

Before Hill could finish her set, Raekwon and Ghostface took to the 36 Chambers stage on the other side of the field. They opened with "Striving for Perfection," the opening skit from Rae's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... , and then tore into "Incarcerated Scarfaces," "Criminology" and "Ice Cream." It was a '90s-era dream come true, but unfortunately hip-hop's faithful were forced to choose, because halfway through Rae and Ghost's set, the night's headliner Nas, started his show on the main stage.

At around 10:30 p.m., the crowd gathered at Nas' stage, which was decorated with props made to mirror his native Queensbridge, New York, housing project. There was a backdrop with buildings, a real lamppost, project benches and a gate that stood as the entrance. It was 17 years ago that Nasir Jones dropped his highly regarded debut, Illmatic, and on Saturday night he maneuvered through the 10-track masterpiece starting with its opener, "Genesis." With DJ Premier backing him, Nas rapped the words to "N.Y. State of Mind" and "It Ain't Hard to Tell" with a ferocity that recalled the young MC in 1994.

Nas did, at times, depart from the Illmatic theme, treating his day-one fans to something special. First, he brought out MC Serch to perform their 1992 underground banger "Back to the Grill." Next up, he invited Joe Fatal, Akinyele and Large Professor to do "Live at the Barbeque," the 1991 song that gave Nas his rap debut.

From there, it was a full-on party as the Braveheart MC did his new single "Nasty," invited Lauryn back out for their collabo "If I Ruled the World" and closed with the hyped-up "Made Ya Look."

Before he left closed out the night, Nas shouted, "I love you New York City," and it was apparent that NYC loves him back.

Raekwon Battles Himself On Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang

'It's ... dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew,' Rae tells MTV News of new solo LP.

Raekwon the Chef knows a thing or two about Shaolin and Wu-Tang. The title of the MC's fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, represents the New York City borough he hails from, Staten Island — whose street name in rap circles is Shaolin — and, of course, the MC has been a key member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan since its founding in the early '90s.

Ultimately, though, Rae's album, which dropped on Tuesday (March 8), is inspired (like many things Wu-Tang) by the classic 1981 Gordon Liu film of the same name, about a rivalry between two schools of ancient martial arts.

"[The film is about] basically two schools fighting with one another," Raekwon told MTV News recently about the movie's plot. "But they all come from the same school, and it was an outsider who actually tried to get the Shaolin style and the Wu-Tang style and have them go at one another. On this album, it's the same thing: It's two schools and, you know, I'm part of that school. I'm Shaolin but at the same time, I'm Wu-Tang. So really, it's ego versus discipline, dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew."

It's no coincidence that the concept behind Raekwon's album focuses on two forces in opposition. Rae began working on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang back in late 2007, after expressing disappointment with the creative direction Wu-Tang's nominal leader, the RZA, had taken with the group's '07 LP, 8 Diagrams. (Fellow Wu member Ghostface Killah went so far as to call the album "bullsh--" in an interview with MTV's "Sucker Free" at the time.)

In an interview the same year with Miss Info, Raekwon remarked: "RZA's trying to create too much of an orchestra, piano, you know ...he's trying to do too much of this guitar sh-- and we don't want that and the fans don't want that. I'm not having that. ... Realistically, what's gonna happen is ... if [8 Diagrams] comes out, we comin' out with another album."

Rae went on to release his critically acclaimed solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Part 2 in 2009, followed by 2010's Wu-Massacre, a collaboration album with fellow Wu members Ghostface and Method Man. The sonic direction of both projects returned to the gritty production style that Wu-Tang Clan had become known for.

But in that time, RZA and Rae also buried the hatchet. So while Rae's latest solo album was concieved during a feud, and uses that theme as its core, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang may turn out to be the album that shows Wu-Tang really is forever.

"You gonna hear a lot of loving songs in there, you gonna hear betrayal songs, you gonna hear action that takes place on some of the records," Rae explained. "But it all revolves around that world, that Shaolin/Wu-Tang world. They just battling one another, and at the end of the day, we all come to find out that we're one and the same. We fighting each other but we're the same."

Raekwon On Hottest MCs: 'All Of Them Are Winners To Me'

Raekwon's status as one of hip-hop's elite lyricists was cemented with his seminal 1995, debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ....

Fourteen years later, the legendary rapper released the sequel, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ... Pt. II. The critically acclaimed effort earned the Chef recognition from a new generation of fans, and he landed at #10 on the 2009 edition of MTV's Hottest MCs in the Game.

The 2010 list will be revealed beginning October 18, and experienced artists like Big Boi and Bun B are angling for a position on it, as are upstarts like Waka Flocka Flame and Nicki Minaj.

Raekwon is rooting for the veterans to make the cut.

"All of them are winners to me, honestly," he told MTV News. "I can't say who should get it and who shouldn't, because [Big Boi and Bun B] are both superstars to me. Whoever gets it, they deserve it."

The Wu-Tang MC said it's up to the vets to keep pushing forward if they expect to receive the same nods their younger contemporaries earn.

"I think it's all in the mind," he explained. "If you're somebody that really paved the way in the game, it's all on you. And that's something that I had to [realize] at the end of the day. It's like, I just want people to know I still love this. I'm in love with this.' It's like being with a woman that you care about, that you really love — no matter how far you're away from her, you still love her.

"If you say that you can do something and you know that people know you're capable of doing it, then do it to your best ability," Raekwon added. "Do it 'till the wheels falls off."

Kanye West Recruits Swizz Beatz, Raekwon For 'Lord, Lord, Lord'

The G.O.O.D. Fridays keep rolling on.

Kanye West dropped his weekly gratis track early Saturday (September 18), and this week's offering, "Lord, Lord, Lord," is heavy on silky soul and laid-back flows. Boasting verses from lyrical luminaries Mos Def and Raekwon and fellow producer/MC Swizz Beatz, as well as hearty riffs from R&B heavyweight and favored West vocalist of late Charlie Wilson, "Lord" features more of the smoky throwback feel the MC has dished out on tracks like "Devil In a New Dress" and "See Me Now."

West apparently tinkered with the song until, literally, the midnight hour, tweeting late Friday, "Swizz laying his verse ... it's almost midnight #GOODFRIDAYS." Swizzy quipped that he and the Chicago MC had to fudge the Friday deadline for East Coast fans. "GOOD FRIDAY IS ON LA TiME TONIGHT LMAO!" he tweeted.

However, the resulting track has none of the rushed energy you might expect from a five-artist collabo completed just hours before hitting the Web. It is instead a graceful seven-minute-long joint highlighting each contributor's distinct swagger.

Mos opens the track, gliding through cerebral rhymes like, "Cool ruler standing still, sweatin' through the shade/He knew those lights only grew bright to fade/Dead-wrong pageantry, lottery and games/Sleight of hand provided by extravagant and fake."

West follows with a punchier delivery, rattling off lyrics such as, "I got lines that's better than n----s albums, plural/king of the urban, make ya sh-- sound rural."

Then Swizz shows off the fruits of his late-night session, jumping in with "All-white Bentley, I call that 'Mama'/my life crazy, like Obama's."

Wu-Tang Clan elder statesman Raekwon rides out the track with lines like, "Open glass on my fingers/I sit back like I'm caged but still cakin,' my n----s is hatin.' It's like being in the livest Lambo in the hood, you a piece of steak/I'd rather be that then some bacon," before recounting days living "amongst fiends, countin' currency, hittin' blunts."

Raekwon Co-Directing 'C.R.E.A.M.' Movie

Rae teams with Damon Dash for 'Cash Rules Everything Around Me,' plans to stay behind the scenes for the film.

2010 is turning out to be a major year for Raekwon. After pulling off successful appearances with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan at this summer's Rock the Bells Tour and jumping on a remix of Justin Bieber's "Runaway Love" with Kanye West, the Chef has been cooking up a lot of buzz. Now, the Wu O.G. is setting his sights on Hollywood. The hip-hop luminary has revealed that he's stepping behind the lens for a new flick.

"I'm working on a movie called 'C.R.E.A.M.' that I co-directed with one of my partners. We teamed up with [Damon] Dash," Raekwon told New York Magazine in an interview published Friday (September 3). "Y'all gonna be hearing more about this movie that we're putting together called 'C.R.E.A.M.' It's called 'Cash Rules Everything Around Me.' It's a lot of things transpiring right now, but I just want to continue to stay in my zone, stay focused and keep working."

The MC didn't divulge too many details about the project, which shares its title with a classic banger from the 1993 Wu LP Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). He did, however, insist that he's going to stay behind the scenes and has no plans to appear onscreen.

"I'm playing the outskirts on this one because I kind of feel like that's where I'm at. You know, I don't know. At this point, I probably won't be in it, but we don't know," Rae said, "I want to more or less capture the scenes from the outside looking in, because I want it to be something that people say is a classic, and they respect the storyline of where we went with it."

Raekwon also announced on Twitter that fans may be getting a taste of the flick very soon. "Believe it or not hopefully this week and nyc we will be shooting a trailer for the movie C.R.E.A.M so lookout for it!" the Wu MC tweeted on Friday.

The Immobilarity lyricist said he's been looking to kick off the project for a minute and believes the time has come to make the film happen.

"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time, even when we was making [the 2009 release] Cuban Linx II, I was already making it my business to obligate time to that, to putting the script together. It's where it needs to be right now," Rae said. "I'm just trying to be a machine. A roller coaster machine, man."

In addition to the "C.R.E.A.M." movie, Rae has been working on his upcoming effort Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang which he's planning to drop later this year.

Kanye West Drops Justin Bieber 'Runaway Love' Remix

On Kanye West's re-engineered vision of Justin Bieber's "Runaway Love," which arrived online Monday (August 30), 'Ye and Raekwon take turns trading Wu-homage rhymes in between the teen's vocals.

West sampled the Wu-Tang Clan's 1993 breakout smash "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F--- Wit" for the number. In his verse, Kanye pays homage to Raekwon's standout verse on Jodeci's "Freek'N You" remix, among other nods to the Staten Island collective. The veteran Wu lyricist also gives a nod to that same verse.

"Yo, 'Ye, what up," Rae spits, opening the track like he did on the Jodeci hit. "You got stacks like the International House of Pancakes/ All alone, ready to phone me and your hand shakes/ Palms is wetted, don's regret/ Never to walk miles for love, I sit in the starter's deck."

"Last name West, and my teeth diamonds," West rapped. "She said, 'Yo, what's your occupation: crazy rhyming?' "

Bieber's vocals are the same as on the original. Raekwon anchors the song with two verses, and Kanye has one verse on the track.

Raekwon spoke to MTV News earlier this month and revealed that only he and West joined forces in the studio for the track. The wordsmith made no mention of Bieber among the celebrities who were present during the session at New York's Electric Lady Studios.

"Kanye was just being Kanye," Rae said. "He was definitely excited. The energy in the room was already speaking for itself. It was time to get up and have fun on the track together. We was drinking, laughing, being normal cats. At the same time, we had a houseful of celebrities in the house as well. [Kanye] was moving through the facility, checking out the studios he had. He had three studios in there.

"You had Akon in the building. Mos Def was just chillin'. Mos is a good friend of 'Ye's," Rae added. "You had Charlie Wilson, the legendary cat from the Gap Band. Chris Rock walked in. These are guys that really respect who 'Ye is. 'Ye's energy is cool. He's a normal cat. A normal Chicago/world cat. Very mature. Having a great time."

The record came together after Kanye West and Justin Bieber talked to each other via Twitter. "Listening to @JustinBieber 'Run Away love,' " West wrote "I love Sunday mornings in the crib."

Bieber responded and the two traded messages about their mutual admiration.

West then added Raekwon in the mix. The producer revealed that the Wu-Tang Clan star performed on one of his favorite remixes of all time, Jodeci's "Freek'N You" redux.

"Maybe me and Rae should hop on Runaway Love! FLEX would drop bombs," West wrote on Twitter, referring to Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex's method for showing his approval of records.

Chris Brown, Raekwon Recruited For Twista's Perfect Storm

'You're definitely gonna hear the growth and maturity in the music,' rapper says of album, due in October.

For Twista, it took longer than he thought to go home again. The Chicago MC revisited his debut album three years ago with the release of Adrenaline Rush 2007, a nod to his first solo effort, Adrenaline Rush.

But it wasn't until that project's follow-up, last year's Category F5, that Twista and his first producer, the Legendary Traxster, reunited. Now, the pair are working together once again, joined by the Windy City's No ID (Jay-Z, Kanye West) for the rapper's new LP, The Perfect Storm, due in October.

"This album is gonna be different, because you're definitely gonna hear the growth and maturity in the music, that's one thing for sure," Twista told MTV News of the project, his eighth overall. "And also, me being able to get back with Traxster, which is the [producer] that did a lot of my original music, like 'Adrenaline Rush' and [records] like that, so we bringing that back. And also having jams on there that's way different, a different style and vibe. Songs like 'The Heat,' which was produced by Traxster and No ID. You'll be able to hear the whole vibe. You'll hear me tear into it with songs like 'Three Minute Murder,' and you gonna hear me on that sexy thing and you gonna hear me do it with that Chi-Town swag."

Twista also recruited Raekwon ("The Heat") and Chris Brown ("Make a Movie") for The Perfect Storm.

In addition to a new collection of music, Twista plans to include a documentary about his life with the set. According to the fast-rhyming lyricist, the film will be a diary-like take on his journey intertwined with footage of Chicago.

"I'm a person that people don't get to see a lot of, so when you get the documentary, you get to see how I do things, how I am in the studio, my perspective on the city," Twista explained. "And the reason I turned out the way I did, as far as my lyrics and the way I see things, my outlook on things and just breaking down the city. It's a piece of Twista. They don't get to see me on the other side, so it'll be cool."

The Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon is set to release a video for "Ason Jones," his tribute number to fallen group member Ol' Dirty Bastard. The track is from Rae's critically acclaimed Only Built for Cuban Linx ... Pt. II album, released last year. On Thursday, Rae released a trailer for the forthcoming video on YouTube.

"Yo, let's toast to the fallen, lost, forgotten," Raekwon raps in the clip, over views of New York and images of ODB. "If n----s can hear me, then roll up some broccoli/ Ason, the heart of a lion, a purified mind/ The way he did it with a mic and some wine/ I would never forget the day we used to sit back/ Days I be all up in the crib, listening, holding, align him/ And yo, I just miss this n---a."

Earlier this month, Raekwon spoke to MTV News about ODB and what it would be like performing the Wu's seminal debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) without the animated and talented MC.

"Dirty had given us the energy booster that we need to believe that we are the best," Rae explained. "I still think about him. ... I think as I'm getting a little older, I'm getting a little more sensitive in certain places when it comes to my brother being gone.

"It's gonna be fun to get out here and represent and talk about him and see all them fans go crazy because they love Dirty," he added. "They love Dirty so much, I know for a fact that when them records come on, they're gonna go crazy."
