Prodigy Hooks Up With T.I., Wiz Khalifa For H.N.I.C. 3

'I wanted to use people that were kinda hard to get and also you wouldn't think that I would collab with them,' P tells 'RapFix Live.'

There was a time when Prodigy refused high-powered collaborations: When his Mobb Deep partner Havoc urged P to jump on the Notorious B.I.G.'s 1997 "Last Day," a song Hav produced, Prodigy declined.

Those days are over, and on Prodigy's upcoming H.N.I.C. 3 LP, fans can expect to hear not only V.I.P., but T.I., Wiz Khalifa, Havoc and Willie from Day 26 as well.

"I wanted to use people that were kinda hard to get and also you wouldn't think that I would collab with them," Prodigy told "RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway on Wednesday's show. "You wouldn't think that P would have a song with them right now."

Prodigy didn't yet have a title for the track with T.I. because the pair had just finished recording it Tuesday night, but he was able to dish a bit on the song with the Taylor Gang captain: "The Wiz record is called 'Co-Pilot.' That one is dope," he bragged with a sheepish grin.

Fans will have to hold out until July 3 to hear H.N.I.C. 3 in full, but P promises it will be well worth the wait. It's been four years since he released H.N.I.C. Pt. 2, and while the original H.N.I.C. is well-regarded in hip-hop circles, Prodigy admits to rushing production on the second installment. "I had a limited amount of space to do it before I had to turn myself in," he said of his three-year jail stint for gun possession.

Most of the material for the next LP, however, was written during his incarceration. "The third one, I spent a lot of time working on it. I did my little bid, there years or whatever, and that's basically when I was writing most of this album," Prodigy explained. "So, I got to really take my time with the concepts, the lyrics, how I want it to be, be really precise with it and really come up with something that can last a long time."

Former 'Firestarter' act working on new LP; gravel-voiced MC directing film debut.

We couldn't get enough of them. Their songs were our soundtrack, and we laughed, danced, cried and loved along with them. They flashed across our radio and TV burning brightly... but where have they been lately? As you'll find out in this regular feature, sometimes the stories behind your favorite songs are more interesting than the hits themselves.

It was the mid 1990s, grunge was on the wane and the boy-band/girl-singer explosion was still on the horizon. Into the void came an undergreound genre of dance music dubbed "electronica" that had been bubbling up since the late-1980s rave scene in England. It was hyped in the U.S. as the next big thing and suddenly, for a lot of music fans, guys in flannel swinging dented guitars were out and faceless, pasty studio rats wearing flashlight eyeglasses and punching buttons on keyboards and computers were in.

For a few years there, electronica and techno gave a generation of geeky bedroom rock stars a chance to play to thousands of glow-stick waving fans, but the dance didn't last long, as U.S. — and much of the rest of the world's — taste again turned to the good ol' staples of teen pop, guitar rock and hip-hop.

So, whatever became of acts like Leftfield, Autechre, Roni Size, Aphex Twin, Orbital and the Future Sound of London? For the most part, they returned to their roots as club DJs and underground dance acts, releasing mix CDs, playing clubs and remixing other artists. Or, in the case of the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, they kept pumping out albums with the occasional crossover hit. We tracked down the latest intel on what became of some of the genre's biggest stars.

Who: The Prodigy

Biggest hit: "Firestarter"

Why do I know that name?: Even more than electronica stars the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy were touted as the "band" that could possibly break the genre wide open. With provocative Mohawked and nose-ringed maniac Keith Flint as its frontman — a rarity in the anonymous electronica world — the group had a high-energy live show that verged on punk rock with a drum machine. It was all fueled by the massive breakbeat and old-school hip-hop sampling of producer Liam Howlett, who was joined in the group by dancer Leeroy Thornhill and MC Maxim Reality. After scoring a British #1 with its second album, 1995's Music for the Jilted Generation, the group gained international stardom in 1997 with the #1 U.S. and U.K. debut of The Fat of the Land, which featured the signature hits "Firestarter" and the controversial "Smack My Bitch Up." After an extended period of inactivity, Thornhill split in 2002 and Maxim and Flint were largely absent from 2004's attempted comeback album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, which featured vocals from Oasis' Liam Gallagher and actress-turned-singer Juliette Lewis.

What now?: A greatest-hits collection, Their Law: The Singles 1990-2005, was released earlier this year and went platinum in the U.K. The band — now Maxim, Liam, Keith, a guitarist and a drummer — have played some sporadic U.S. dates in support of the two-disc set, with a pair of West Coast shows scheduled for November. According to a spokesperson, Prodigy are working on a new album due next year for a yet-undetermined label.

Who: Tricky

Biggest hit: "Christiansands"

Why do I know that name?: A former member of the Wild Bunch (which mutated into Massive Attack), Tricky rapped on MA's genre-defining 1992 Blue Lines album before he broke out with his 1995 debut, Maxinquaye, which is still considered one of the standard-bearers of the trip-hop movement. The murky album of gravely vocals and narcotic R&B had an underlying menace that was hard to pin down and would become Tricky's sonic signature. Featuring the vocals of female singer Martina, who helped reinvent Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos," the album turned Tricky into an instant electronica star. He went on to release a full album collaboration with the horrorcore U.S. rap group the Gravediggaz later that year and followed in 1996 with Nearly God, on which he worked with artists such as Björk and Neneh Cherry. He released another well-received album, Pre-Millennium Tension, later in 1996, and did remixes for everyone from Garbage to Yoko Ono to Elvis Costello. He recorded an album, Juxtapose, with Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs and Ruff Ryders' Grease in 1999. The guest-heavy BlowBack dropped in 2001 to tepid response, despite cameos from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante and Live's Ed Kowalczyk.

What now?: Tricky released the stripped-down album Vulnerable in 2003 and appeared alongside Nick Nolte in the 2004 film "Clean." According to his Web site, he's finishing work on his directorial film debut, "Brown Punk," due in 2007, and producing new acts on his Brown Punk label.

Who: Goldie

Biggest Hit: "Timeless"

Why do I know that name?: A hybrid of a hip-hop menace with his gold teeth and rave superstar thanks to his magnetic stage persona, former breakdancer Goldie was the first big star of the electronica offshoot of jungle, which was centered on a speedy drum'n' bass sound. His 1995 debut, Timeless, opened with the trippy 20-minute epic of the same name, one of several stretched out, dark jams on the album. His 1998 follow-up SaturnzReturn was an ambitious two-disc set that featured the record-breaking nearly hour-long song "Mother."

What now?: After releasing a few mix CDs, Goldie has remained a fixture on the DJ scene around the world, but has retreated from releasing new albums under his name.

Who: Underworld

Biggest hit: "Born Slippy"

Why do I know that name?: Singer Karl Hyde and guitarist Rick Smith got together in the early 1980s and released two marginally successful albums as Underworld before finally hitting it big in 1993 after recruiting techno DJ Darren Emerson into the fold. The trio's combination of trancey groove and hard-hitting breakbeats layered with jagged guitars and more pop-oriented vocals spawned the classic hit "Born Slippy," which appeared on the soundtrack to "Trainspotting." The group, which also had a graphic-design firm called Tomato that did remix work for Björk and Depeche Mode and commercials for Nike and Pepsi, never again reached the heights of the ubiquitous "Born Slippy," releasing the live album Everything, Everything in 2000, after which Emerson split to return to his life as a DJ. The duo of Smith and Hyde released their first album as a two-piece in more than a decade, A Hundred Days Off, in 2002.

What now?: Hyde and Smith have voluntarily retrenched over the past few years, concentrating on their online "Riverrun Project," which debuted in 2005 as a series of download-only "packages" of music and digital photos, featuring the song suites "A Lovely Broken Thing," "Pizza for Eggs" and June's "I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and This Is My Horse." The pair have also collaborated with composer Gabriel Yared on the score for Anthony Minghella's upcoming film "Breaking and Entering," which stars Jude Law, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn. They're also scoring the new film from "Trainspotting" director Danny Boyle, "Sunshine." In addition to live broadcasts from their studio, the duo are also working on a new album.

In His Own Words Indeed: Twenty-two-year-old Shaffer C. Smith — a.k.a. Ne-Yo — is proving his penchant for collaborations by hooking up with Rihanna, Ghostface and LL Cool J. But his debut record, In My Own Words, is practically devoid of any guest spots; the only one is with Peedi Crakk on the first track, "Stay." Def Jam is amped for the release nevertheless; it's already shipped 700,000 copies of In My Own Words to stores. Tracks include "Let Me Get This Right," "It Just Ain't Right" and "Sign Me Up."

Punk Partners: Hawthorne Heights' too-good-to-be-true 2005 was sidetracked when tour partners Bayside were involved in a devastating van crash that claimed the life of drummer John "Beatz" Holohan and critically injured two other people from the Bayside camp. Both bands' new albums drop this week (and on the same label, Victory).

While Hawthorne Heights are offering bonus content on their MySpace site, their If Only You Were Lonely is frill-free; you'll have to be content with songs like "Where Can I Stab Myself in the Ears" and "We Are So Last Year." Bayside, on the other hand, stuff their Bayside Acoustic concert CD with a DVD featuring the entire Chicago performance, which was the last gig on their fateful tour. They also chip in with a couple of unreleased songs plus covers of Elliott Smith's "Baby Britain" and Smoking Popes' "Megan," for which singer Josh Caterer guested.

And speaking of the Popes, they're copying Bayside with their At Metro live disc, also released through Victory and also containing a DVD of the respective concert, which was also staged in Chicago. Playing together for the first time since 1998, the band hustles through "Ramblin' Rose," "Off My Mind," "Before I'm Gone" and other smoking selections.

Solid as a Rock: There doesn't seem to be much logic behind Kid Rock putting quotes in the title of his album 'Live' Trucker, as if to suggest that the disc isn't really a concert release (then again — and this is really getting into semantics — is any concert recording really "live"? After all, it's already happened, right? Maybe that's what he means). The 13 songs truly were recorded at different venues in and near his Detroit hometown, and his Web site proclaims that they're so good they'll graduate the album to "a seminal lineage that includes the MC5's Kick Out the Jams, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band's 'Live' Bullet (note the single quotes, people) and Kiss Alive!" Fans of the Son of Detroit will delight at tracks featuring former Twisted Brown Trucker Band member Uncle Kracker and the late Joe C, plus, oddly enough, country star Gretchen Wilson (on a duet of "Picture").

Bizzy Wants Revenge: We just heard from Bizzy Bone when he spat Speaking in Tongues in September, but the wacky spiritual rapper has already hit the mic again for Thugs Revenge. Bad Azz comes along for the ride on "Caught Up," while Bizzy hooks up with his friend Mr. Capone-E on "Homies" and Mr. Criminal chimes in on "Rollin' With Hi Power." Most exciting to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony fans, though, will be hearing the group get back together for "Ridin' in the Streets." Ridin' with a vengeance, that is.

Prodigy Deluxe: It took forever for the Prodigy to release 2004's Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned — their first studio disc in five years — and it's taken a while for Their Law - The Singles 1990-2005 to hit shelves, too. But maybe this one was worth the wait: The deluxe double-disc is stacked with 30 tracks, including three unreleased songs and a new remix of "Under My Wheels," plus a chunky, 50-page booklet. The same-named DVD, also dropping this week, has videos for "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter," as well as concert footage from '90s gigs at Red Square in Moscow and elsewhere.

Elvis Costello, War Criminal?: You probably know the Hague as the place where global villains are tried, but a concert venue? Perhaps in an effort to keep Slobodan Milosevic company (why else?), Elvis Costello performed with the 52-piece Metropole Orkest for My Flame Burns Blue. In addition to revamped Costello classics like "Almost Blue" and "Watching the Detectives," he laces 9/11-related lyrics into Charles Mingus' "Hora Decubitus" (the jazz great's widow gave Costello permission to do so) and Billy Strayhorn's last song, "Blood Count." If that's not enough, there's a bonus disc featuring "Il Sogno," a classic composition that was used for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Four Guitars' Live at Luxx: Say what you will about Sonic Youth, but one thing's for sure: Their albums always have good stories behind them. What's coming out this week is actually a joint project between Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Wilco's Nels Cline and New York improviser Carlos Giffoni. The 40-minute experimental composition was tracked in August 2001 at a Brooklyn venue briefly owned by the four avant-garde guitarists, who create "moments of tension, peace, violence" and "psychedelic tunnels of sound echo through endless guitar lines." Rare indeed.

Say Anything's Say Anything ... Is a Real Boy and Latterman's Turn Up the Punk We'll Be Singing: When all else fails, re-release. So say Say Anything with the reissue of their debut record, which came out in 2004 on Doghouse but is so good, according to J Records, that it should be restocked in stores. The touched-up version is saddled with a seven-song bonus disc featuring original demos, fresh takes on old songs and the inimitable "I Will Never Write an Obligatory Song About Being on the Road and Missing Someone." On a similar note, Long Island, New York, punks Latterman are putting their still-recent first record out again with remastered sound and new artwork. But alas, while they won't have a major-label push à la Say Anything, two indie labels — Deep Elm and Rok Lok — are joining forces to co-release Turn Up the Punk We'll Be Singing.

Trespassers William's Having and Nine Black Alps' Everything Is: Is there a better person for lesser-known bands to turn to than a big-name producer? Trespassers William enlisted Flaming Lips knob-twiddler Dave Fridmann for their second record, Having. In anticipation of the release, the band released an exclusive live session through iTunes, during which TW played two unreleased tracks. Similarly, Nine Black Alps linked up with Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) for their first outing, Everything Is, the enhanced version of which comes with a video for the single "Shot Down." In a blaze of glory, they hope.

Bobby Brown, wife Whitney Houston and their kids are all recording albums of their own, according to Bobby, who simply described his effort as taking it back to the top. Reggaeton king Daddy Yankee is joining the likes of Nelly, Jay-Z and 50 Cent and signing on to launch his own sneaker under the Reebok umbrella. Simple Plan will be going head-to-head with gamers for the latest Xbox Live Game With Fame event on Thursday. The Eels are releasing a live album from their performance this summer at Town Hall in New York. Foxy Brown appeared in a New York courtroom Monday morning (December 5) for what was to be the start of her criminal trial — she was arrested last year for assault and harassment, stemming from an August 2004 dispute at a New York nail salon. The judge in Foxy's trial, Melissa Jackson, adjourned the proceedings until December 23, after Brown's attorney, Joseph Tacopina, revealed his client is almost totally deaf, according to an Associated Press report. Tacopina's disclosure came after he was asked why he'd spent the entire morning passing notes back and forth with his client. "She can't hear me," he said. "Anything I have to communicate with her now has to be written." Between now and December 23, Brown will undergo a second surgical procedure to correct her hearing problem. ...
Kelly Clarkson and Common have joined the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences' What's the Download Interactive Advisory Board as honorary members. The board, which is dedicated to creating a dialogue between fans and music makers, will participate with hundreds of teens in the "WTD Rap Session" taking place in the week leading up to the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in February. Other honorary members include Kanye West and members of Earth, Wind & Fire. ...
Producer Phil Spector will stand trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson beginning on April 24, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Friday. Spector, however, could take the witness stand in a pretrial hearing next week to sort out an issue regarding a deposition he gave in a civil lawsuit he launched against former attorney Robert Shapiro. Spector is arguing for Shapiro to return a $1 million retainer he paid the attorney, whom he parted with shortly after. ... Brad Pitt wants to be the daddy to Angelina Jolie's kids, further fueling rumors that the couple are close to tying the knot. "We are confirming that Brad Pitt is in the process of becoming the adoptive father of both children," the actor's publicist said in a statement. Pitt, whose divorce from Jennifer Aniston was finalized in October, filed legal papers on Friday requesting that the last names of Jolie's two children, Maddox and Zahara, be changed to Jolie-Pitt. ...
"This is the best show you'll ever see in your life," Kanye West shouted from the stage at his Touch the Sky tour stop Saturday in Universal City, California. And Kanye did give the fans a show they wouldn't soon forget — blessing the crowd with hit after hit, he then gave them guest after guest, starting with Common. They did "Get 'Em High" together before Kanye let Common take over with "Go!" and "The Light." Maroon 5's Adam Levine found time to come out and sing his part on "Heard 'Em Say." Topping Levine was Patti LaBelle, who joined West for "Roses," a song she's not even credited for on Kanye's Late Registration album. The biggest crowd-pleaser of the night, though, arrived when Jamie Foxx's falsetto "She take my money ..." came through the speakers — not on wax, but live from the man himself. The pair danced around to "Gold Digger" and ran through "Slow Jamz" with Foxx even jokingly imitating Twista, who was not in the house. Foxx, probably the first Oscar winner to provide the beat box for a freestyle, did exactly that while Kanye rhymed. ...
Nine Inch Nails have rolled out a spate of new tour dates for 2006, many of them campus gigs and small-town stops. The first of the 22 dates on the trek is booked for February 10 at Assembly Hall on the Champaign campus of the University of Illinois, and the final date is set for March 27 in Wichita, Kansas. No openers for the tour have been identified yet. ... Hot on the heels of their first headlining tour and news of a spring jaunt with Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights have announced the release date and track list for their second album, If Only You Were Lonely. The LP, produced by David Bendeth in Hoboken, New Jersey, will hit stores on February 28. Lonely features 12 tracks, including "The Phoenix Sung So," "Seasons Lost (IV) You" and "Mockingbirds Help." ...
NOFX will be hitting the road on February 20 with the Lawrence Arms and the Loved Ones for a 12-date run. The trek winds down in Chicago on March 5. ... Nelly Tops Nelly On Billboard Albums Chart

It's Suit that trumps Sweat, by more than 54,000 copies.

The closest competition Nelly will face on next week's Billboard albums chart comes from the St. Lunatic leader himself. Having simultaneously released two albums last week, the St. Louis MC has a lock on the #1 and #2 spots.
It's Suit that trumps Sweat, by more than 54,000 copies, according to SoundScan. The album featuring the smash single "My Place" (with Jaheim) sold more than 395,000 copies to take the top slot, while its companion moved more than 341,000 copies on the strength of the suggestive single "Flap Your Wings."
Nelly's two-album total barely pushes past the first-week sales of his last album, Nellyville, which in June 2002 also debuted at #1, with 23,000 fewer copies.
Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying will drop a notch to run a distant third, with more than 121,000 copies sold. It'll be followed by Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company, which also takes a step back, to #4. The late soul pioneer's duets album sold more than 113,000 copies.
For the fourth week straight, the immovable object that is Now That's What I Call Music! 16 will remain at #5. The more than 100,000 copies it sold last week brings its eight-week total up to 1.8 million. Ashlee Simpson will also hold on to her old place at #6, as Autobiography tacked on another 75,000 to its total.
Although it sold slightly fewer copies last week than the week prior, Maroon 5's Songs About Jane managed to climb back into the top 10 by sidling up three spots to #8 and moving more than 63,000 copies. Usher, too, will make some forward progress, as Confessions takes a two-step shimmy up to #10, with more than 61,000 copies.
The remainder of next week's top 10 finds last week's top album, Alan Jackson's What I Do, dropping to #7, with more than 71,000 copies sold; and Anita Baker's My Everything moving from #4 to #9 with more than 63,000 copies sold.
Aside from the Nellys, the next new album to make the chart is from heavy-metal vets Megadeth. The band's 10th album will land at #18. Two notches later, Los Angeles' Irish punks Flogging Molly will place at #20 with Within a Mile of Home.
While the single "1985" is keeping Bowling for Soup part of the pop vernacular a year and a half after earning a Grammy nomination for their last album, 2002's Drunk Enough to Dance, it didn't immediately translate into massive album sales for the Wichita Falls, Texas, quartet. Their fourth album, A Hangover You Don't Deserve, will debut at #37.
Other notable debuts on next week's chart include Tears for Fears' reunion album, and first in nine years, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, at #46; the TV series soundtrack Will & Grace: Let the Music Out! at #57; electronica act the Prodigy's Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned at #62; Gov't Mule's Deja Voodoo at #88; the Faint's Wet From Birth at #99; and the Thrills' Let's Bottle Bohemia at #153.

Sweaty club patrons and slick-suited players alike will find tracks to grind to on this week's top new release.
Nelly returns with a double shot of his Southern rap, with one half of Sweatsuit heating up the party with club tracks (Sweat) and the other taking the tempo down a couple notches while upping the sexy ante (Suit). The rapper, who collaborated with Mase, Fat Joe, Remy Martin, Jaheim, Christina Aguilera, Mobb Deep and country star Tim McGraw on the LP, said he had so much great material coming out of him in the studio that he couldn't possibly limit his third album to just one disc.
Last year, Mr. Cheeks came Back Again! with a new album and just 18 months later, he's back again with Ladies & Ghettomen. Meanwhile, garage/hip-hop artist Dizzee Rascal, who won the U.K.'s Mercury Prize in 2003 and is on the Long List for this year's Shortlist Music Prize, will release his sophomore album, Showtime, this week.
On the harder side of things, the Prodigy, whose biggest release was 1997's The Fat of the Land, will release the more dance-oriented Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, which debuted at #1 on the British charts at the end of August. Sticking with the heaviness, Megadeth will release their 10th studio album, The System Has Failed, their first since 2001's The World Needs a Hero.
Van Halen are releasing their 1986 video "Live Without a Net" onto DVD. With Sammy Hagar at the mic, the band rocks through tracks like "Why Can't This Be Love?" and "There's Only One Way to Rock." In other '80s rock band news, Tears for Fears will release Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, their first studio release since 1989.
Guns N' Roses bassist Tommy Stinson, who recently put out a solo album, Village Gorilla Head, is releasing Once, Twice, Three Times a Maybe from his band Perfect, which formed in 1995 but only released an EP in 1996.
Pop-punk outfit Bowling for Soup are making their oddball name more widely recognized with the single "1985" off their newest album, A Hangover You Don't Deserve, which comes out this week. "The Lyricist Lounge Show" star and underground hip-hop fixture Wordsworth drops his debut solo effort, Mirror Music. And on the indie rock side of things, the Thrills release their sophomore LP, Let's Bottle Bohemia, and Canadian duo Tegan & Sara see their third album, So Jealous, hit shelves.
Some of the other artists with albums hitting stores in this big release week are the Datsuns (Outta Sight/ Outta Mind), Fu Manchu (Start the Machine), Flogging Molly (Within a Mile of Home), Citizen Cope (The Clarence Greenwood Recordings), Har Mar Superstar (The Handler), the Zombies (As Far as I Can See), Ray LaMontagne (Trouble), Gov't Mule (Deja Voodoo) and Branford Marsalis (Eternal).

Band finally completes long-overdue follow-up to 1997's Fat of the Land.

Inspiration can come in many forms, even rejection.
Shortly after the Prodigy released their 2002 single "Baby's Got a Temper," frontman Liam Howlett received a bracing wake-up call from critics, who universally panned the track. So he scrapped the other five songs he had completed, which were in the same vein, and started again from scratch.
He retreated to his house in Essex, England, and strove to write an album that would mark a new direction for his music, a diversion from past hits like "Firestarter" and "Smack My Bitch Up." The problem was, Howlett had no idea what musical direction he wanted to pursue. That's when madness set in — a dementia that kept him in an Axl Rose-like state of unproductivity for another year.
"I would go to bed every night thinking, 'Tomorrow's the day I'm going to write something cool,' " Howlett said. "But I really thought everything was fine. A friend once said the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. That was me. I was in the studio every day, doing virtually the same thing and scrapping it, and at the end of four months I had, like, two beats done."
At that point, Howlett's producer bailed and the songwriter changed his entire mode of operation. Instead of composing away from the pulse of civilization, Howlett relocated to a busy section of London and dumped all of his samples and loops onto a laptop so he could work wherever inspiration hit. Over the next year, he wrote in gardens, in restaurants, even in bed.
"I created a cozy cocoon in bed where I could just sit with my laptop and create," he said. "I had 'Moonraker' playing on my DVD and I'd have a few glasses of Jack Daniel's and really be happy. It was like a childhood nostalgia trip with James Bond and music. From that moment on, I was enjoying myself again. I wrote three tracks like that, and the rest of the album flowed from there."
The resulting disc, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned — which debuted at #1 on the British charts this week — is a striking contrast to the group's menacing, cacophonous 1997 album, The Fat of the Land. There are still heavy beats, brash samples and swarming rhythms, but the songs are simpler, sleazier, more dance-oriented and more rooted in new wave and electro-pop (the album will be released in the U.S. on September 14).
"This whole record is about re-establishing the sound of the Prodigy," Howlett said. "A lot of people know us from tracks like 'Firestarter' and 'Smack My Bitch Up,' which were really punklike. But our early stuff wasn't like that at all. I want to re-educate people about what I'm about."
Instead of staying on top of the electronic music scene during the creation of Always Outnumbered, as he had done in the past, Howlett stopped going to clubs and listening to new artists, and he started taking inspiration from the world that blossomed around him. "One time I was out with my wife [ex-All Saints singer Natalie Appleton] in a Lebanese restaurant having a romantic dinner, and I heard this music coming out from the kitchen," Howlett recalled. "I ran to the back of the restaurant and asked this guy what this music was, and I wrote it down. The next day I went off to find this sample, which I used in 'Medusa's Path.' "
While most of the songs do, indeed, sound like nothing the Prodigy have ever recorded, many of the sounds on the album are instantly familiar. "Phoenix" resurrects Shocking Blue's 1969 song "Love Buzz," lyrics and all (a track later made famous by Nirvana). "The Way It Is" cops the main passage from Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and "Hot Ride" nabs the chorus from the Fifth Dimension's "Up, Up and Away."
"I'm a beat thief. That's the way I make music," Howlett said. "I mean, why shouldn't I release a complete jack of someone else's tune if it sounds good? Some of it comes from my twisted sense of humor, I suppose. Like, I love that the lyric to 'Hot Ride' goes 'Up, up and away in my beautiful balloon' and then we add, 'Now get out, I'll push you out.' I think that's really funny."
Something that wasn't nearly as funny to his cohorts — rapper Maxim and screamer Keith Flint — is the way Howlett approached vocals on the disc. Instead of relying on his usual sidekicks, he invited a bunch of guest performers to contribute, including actress Juliette Lewis ("Hot Ride"), rappers Kool Keith ("Wake Up Call") and Twista ("Get Up Get Off"), and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher (see "Twista, Kool Keith, Juliette Lewis Smack Up New Prodigy LP" ).
"I wanted to do something fresh," he explained. "I met Liam six years ago. He came up to me at a festival, and was like, 'Me brother's just done a track with the Chemical Brothers. Me and you should do a track to f---ing blow that out of the water.' And I was like, 'OK, let's do it.' Many years later, we're really f---ed up at my house at three in the morning and we decided to go in and record. I was so messed up, I couldn't even remember how to open the studio door. But somehow, I managed to wire his mics up and I laid down a bunch of stuff and he just went crazy."
When the Prodigy tour next year, Maxim and Flint will be back on board and the Prodigy will perform songs from their new record as well as vintage material. Of course, there's no guarantee that the shows will draw the fanatical following the band had in the late '90s. Many years have passed since the band broke into the mainstream with The Fat of the Land, and lots of modern rock, pop and electronic-music fans aren't familiar with the group's snarling, bile-spewing back catalog. But rather than being distressed by such a reality, Howlett looks forward to the challenge.
"I'm not worried if people remember us or not because, for me, this record is like starting over," he explained. "I've always wanted to be in a new band again. It's really exciting to stand there and perform for people who don't know who you are."

Anyone who associated '90s electronic rockers the Prodigy with the urgent, primal bark of former vocalists Keith Flint and Maxim might not connect the band's new album with the group who wrote "Firestarter" and "Smack My Bitch Up."
But that doesn't mean the vocals on Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned will sound foreign. Twista, Kool Keith and Oasis' Liam Gallagher will guest on the 12-song disc, due September 15.
One collaboration, called "Hotride," was recorded with someone whose voice isn't as well known as her face: Juliette Lewis. The debut album by her band, Juliette & the Licks, Like a Bolt of Lightning, is also due in September.
"Juliette had so much vocal power, she tore the roof off," group mastermind Liam Howlett said Monday. "It was shocking. I was standing at the desk, nodding at her through the glass, going, 'F---, where did that voice come from?' "
Not only are the Prodigy drawing primarily from guest singers on their first disc in seven years, they're shaking up the musical mix as well. Unlike the songs on 1997's The Fat of the Land, which were limited in scope because they were written to be played live, the new material was penned for maximum studio impact.
"The title says it all about the music and band," Howlett said. "I wanted to make a record that was more old-school, like our second album, [1995's Music for the Jilted Generation.] I wanted to make it sexier and go back to the beats."
The first single from Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned will be "Girls," which Howlett describes as "dirty electro-punk with female vocals." The Prodigy will shoot a gritty, lo-fi video for the track soon, but no director has been named.
The group's song with Liam Gallagher, "Shoot Down," will feature his bandmate and brother, Noel Gallagher, on bass. Kool Keith, who rapped on The Fat of the Land's "Diesel Power," will make a return appearance on "Wake Up Call.
And a wakeup call is exactly what the Prodigy got when they released the single "Baby's Got a Temper" in August 2002. Howlett was so unhappy with the direction the track was taking the group, he decided to start over from square one.
"To be honest, that track kicked me up the ass," he said on the band's Web site in January. "It was the only time I kind of thought, 'Nah, this ain't totally right.' We had to change. It felt like it was a tired formula; it was more like 'Here we go again.' "
The epiphany explains why the Prodigy have been absent for the past two years. What about the other five? "It didn't take seven years [to make this record], it took one year. I played golf for the other six," Howlett joked.
The Prodigy are planning a tour for October.

Prodigy Push Album Release Date Back — Way Back

Prodigy fans might find themselves waiting a little longer than they expected for the release of the band's latest LP.
Five months after the group was originally slated to drop its long-awaited follow-up to 1997's multiplatinum The Fat of the Land, frontman Liam Howlett has issued a statement saying that production on the new album only began four months ago.
"The recording of Prodigy's forthcoming album, tentatively titled Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, is heavily underway," the statement read. "Recording of the album started about four months ago. Intentions are to deliver the new album shortly after the new year. Single releases will precede a spring/summer album release date."
News that Prodigy are still in production might come as a surprise to those who were expecting Always Outnumbered in May. The spring release date was provided shortly after the Brit electronica troupe issued the single "Baby's Got a Temper" in June of 2002.
In 1999 Howlett released his DJ album, The Dirtchamber Sessions, Vol. 1, under the Prodigy moniker. The set — which didn't feature MCs Keith Flint or Maxim — featured Howlett mixing music from artists ranging from the Chemical Brothers and Digital Underground to LL Cool J and KLF.

If you're already freaking out about next summer's "The Matrix Reloaded," go ahead and take another little red chill pill, because the soundtrack to the sci-fi flick will be out of this world as well.
Among the acts producers are reaching out to for the companion album are Linkin Park, System of a Down, Disturbed, Deftones, Prodigy and former Rage Against the Machine singer Zack de la Rocha, according to a source at Maverick Records. They are among the artists who will be asked to watch clips of the movie for musical inspiration in the next month or so, the source said.
The movie, already tagged as one of next year's potential blockbusters, opens on May 15, with the LP slated to hit stores on May 6. The album's music supervisor is DJ/remixer Jason Bentley.
A separate soundtrack to the third movie in the trilogy, "The Matrix Revolutions," will be compiled to coincide with that film's opening in November 2003.
The soundtrack to 1999's "The Matrix" featured songs from Marilyn Manson, Rage, Deftones, Rob Zombie, Prodigy, Monster Magnet, Ministry and Rammstein.
