'X Factor' Performance Finale Features Guest Duets

At the outset of Wednesday's (December 21) 90-minute "The X Factor" performance finale, which pitted three singers — Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro — against one another for a $5 million recording contract, judge Simon Cowell predicted, "I think this is going to be the closest final we've ever had." By the end of the penultimate show, Cowell made it clear who had his vote to win, and unsurprisingly, it was the singer he mentored in the race, Melanie Amaro. Following Amaro's second song, a rendition of Beyoncé's "Dreamgirls" ballad "Listen," Cowell gave up all pretense of objectivity and threw his weight behind the singer, whom he at one point cut from the competition before reconsidering and allowing her back in after making a personal visit to her home.

"I brought this show to America because I believe some of the greatest singers in the world are from this country, and you just proved that," he told the 19-year-old from Sunrise, Florida. "I think you, based on that performance tonight, to me, should be the winner of 'The X Factor,' because you're going to represent this country all over the world." Earlier in the show, Amaro performed a duet of "I Believe I Can Fly" with R. Kelly, which marked Kelly's first performance since undergoing throat surgery earlier this year. Amaro held her own with the singer, but Kells stole the spotlight with his effortless vocal gymnastics, on what was called his first-ever duet of his 1996 smash. For his part, Kells called Amaro "unbelievable," and said, "There's no doubt in my mind this girl is on her way to the moon." While L.A. Reid criticized Amaro for not performing well in the song's key, Cowell backed her 100 percent, calling the performance "close to godly." Chris Rene, a 28-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, shared the stage early on with Avril Lavigne, as the two performed Lavigne's hit "Complicated" together, complete with a new rap from Rene. Rene's second song was "Young Homie," a song he penned and sang during the audition process and again on the November 22 episode, when he mixed it with the Beatles' "Let It Be." He earned high marks from the judges, with Paula Abdul dubbing his "Young Homie" performance "magic," while calling Rene — who celebrated his eighth month of sobriety on Tuesday — the "consummate singer-songwriter-performer." "You make everyone fall in love with you!" she beamed. Cowell called him a "brilliant" performer, adding he's a "true gentleman" and a "really nice guy." Josh Krajcik, a 30-year-old self-described "burrito slinger" from Columbus, Ohio, opened the show with Alanis Morissette, as the two took on her 1998 hit "Uninvited." Krajcik was visibly nervous while sharing the stage with Morissette but was much more in his element during his second song, when he stripped away all the fancy production cues and did "At Last" alone with his guitar. That performance was hailed as a return to form from the judges. "This is what we liked about you in the first place," said Cowell, while Krajcik's mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, praised his consistency throughout the competition. "You have delivered in every single performance," she told him. The winner will be crowned on Thursday's two-hour finale, which is set to feature appearances by Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Leona Lewis, Pitbull and Ne-Yo. What did you think of the "X Factor" finale? Alanis Morissette welcomed a son over Christmas, People reports. Morissette and husband Mario "Souleye" Treadway named their boy Ever Imre. "Alanis Morissette and Mario 'Souleye' Treadway welcomed a baby boy, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, on Dec. 25th," a rep for the singer told the magazine. "All are healthy and happy." Morissette, who had a baby shower in October, announced she was pregnant in August. She took to Twitter at the time to share her excitement with the world. "Yes, happy news....i'm pregnant," she wrote. "We're so excited to start our family.... xo a." Shortly after making the announcement, she stopped by "Chelsea Lately" and recalled how surprised she was when she found out she was expecting a baby. "I actually thought I wasn't," she told the talk-show host before recalling how the doctor broke the news to her, much to her own shock. Morissette and Souleye married back in May in Los Angeles. She had previously been engaged to newly single Ryan Reynolds, whom she credited for changing her outlook on love in a 2004 interview. "I'm ready to commit to someone and ready to do the work. And I'm ready to allow that part of myself to come out," she said. "I think for a long time, because of my compulsively wanting to be viewed as an überfeminist, I would really stay away from things like being a hopeless romantic, being dependent on a man, or even wanting to be with a man, frankly." This is shaping up to be a great year for Alanis Morissette. In May, the singer tied the knot with rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, and now the couple are expecting their first child, her rep confirmed to People. The 36-year-old songstress took to Twitter to share her joy. "Yes, happy news....i'm pregnant :) we're so excited to start our family.... xo a," she tweeted on Wednesday (August 11). The baby's due date is unknown. Fans should be used to the singer sharing her big news over the Internet. Just four months ago, she told fans about her marriage to the fellow musician on Facebook. "Hi guys! So happy to share with you that my man Souleye and I got married. We're very excited to embark on this journey with each other....sending love...connect soon xo — Alanis," she wrote. But she hasn't always been keen on letting her inner romantic out. Morrisette revealed back in 2004 that it was her then-fiancé Ryan Reynolds who helped her prepare for love. "I'm ready to commit to someone and ready to do the work. And I'm ready to allow that part of myself to come out," she said. "I think for a long time, because of my compulsively wanting to be viewed as an überfeminist, I would really stay away from things like being a hopeless romantic, being dependent on a man, or even wanting to be with a man, frankly." And while the news of Morisette's pregnancy might push back any music projects she may have on her plate, the Canadian singer did release a new song, "I Remain," earlier this year. Alanis Morissette married rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway during an intimate ceremony in Los Angeles on May 22. People reports that the ceremony was attended by family members and close friends. "So happy to share with you that my man Souleye and I got married," Morissette later revealed on her Twitter page. "We're very excited to embark on this journey with each other." Morissette and Souleye married barely over a week before the "Jagged Little Pill" rocker's 36th birthday on June 1. While it's the first marriage for both musicians, Morissette was previously engaged to "The Proposal" star Ryan Reynolds. The two called off their wedding in 2007, though the singer's 2004 comments on romance and love are certainly thoughtful given her recent nuptials. "I think for a long time, because of my compulsively wanting to be viewed as an überfeminist, I would really stay away from things like being a hopeless romantic, being dependent on a man, or even wanting to be with a man, frankly," she said at the time. "[Now] I look forward to growing old with my boyfriend, the both us growing old and wrinkly together. I heard this really great metaphor, that being in a long-term relationship is like a Ferris wheel, whether you stay when it's on the bottom or whether you get off, and I'm realizing at this point in my life that I'm not getting off, finally. Now I know it's an ongoing journey of us helping each other, healing each other, killing each other, laughing together. It's sexy, it's everything." Back in February, Crystal Bowersox took the "American Idol" stage to perform Alanis Morissette's "Hand in My Pocket." It didn't go so well. Simon Cowell accused her of sounding like a thousand buskers outside a thousand different subway stations. Bowersox got her revenge on Wednesday night's (May 26) finale when she united with Morissette for a duet that brought the crowd at the Nokia Theatre to its feet. The "Idol" finalist got the performance started with a solo take on Morissette's "Ironic," a song that reached the #4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She then turned dramatically toward the back of the stage and welcomed her fellow artist onto the stage for a duet of the Grammy-winning best-seller "You Oughta Know," another cut off Morissette's 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. As Morissette strode out under the bright blue lights of the "Idol" stage, the two singers exchanged verses, crisscrossed the stage and finally met in the middle, voices wailing, smiles wide. Buskers, they weren't. The performance was not without its share of ironies. After Cowell dismissed Crystal's effort in February, the singer bounced back to establish herself as one of the show's undeniable front-runners the very next week when she busted out a killer version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light." She hasn't looked back since. And Bowersox has come to count Cowell as one of her biggest supporters. On Tuesday's show, Cowell praised Bowersox's performance of "Up to the Mountain," saying, "I thought that was by far the best performance and the song of the night. And since this is going to be the final critique I'm ever going to give, I would just like to say that was outstanding." B melds 'If I Were a Boy' with Morissette's 'You Oughta Know.'

Beyoncé proved it was ladies night at the 2010 Grammy Awards by putting a twist on her performance of "If I Were a Boy" via the Alanis Morissette anthem "You Oughta Know."

Decked out in a futuristic, spiked black outfit and matching shoes, B — already a multiple Grammy winner by the time she took the stage — delved into Morissette's power jam midway through her set, as she has during recent live performances. She pranced, spun and did the Dutty Wine while the crowd cheered in approval. "And I'm here to remind you/ Of the mess you left when you went away/ It's not fair to deny me/ Of the cross I bear that you gave to me/ You, you, you oughta know," she sang as military-esque dancers flanked her. The former Destiny's Child frontwoman, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are among the nights' big nominees, and each has already won some hardware. B's early Grammy wins were handed out pre-broadcast, so the "Halo" superstar seemed to take her time onstage to thank everyone with a raucous set. She smiled and flipped her hair with the kind of bravado expected from Jay-Z, her husband, who was seated in the front row during the performance. After Gaga's performance, which included a cameo from Elton John, the bar was set high for the rest of the evening. "If I were a boy/ I would turn off my phone/ Tell everyone it's broken/ So they'd think that I was sleeping alone," B sang and surprised everyone with her dancehall-inspired moves. Foo Fighters have sketched out their 2008 tour plans, which include the band's first-ever show at Madison Square Garden in New York. Dates for the jaunt — the Foos' biggest one yet in the U.S. — are as follows, with more expected to be announced: Sunrise, Florida (January 16); Orlando, Florida (January 17); Birmingham, Alabama (January 19); Pensacola, Florida (January 20); Houston (January 22); Dallas (January 23); Memphis, Tennessee (January 25); Nashville (January 26); Fayetteville, Arkansas (January 28); Oklahoma City (January 29); Worcester, Massachusetts (February 18); New York (February 19); Philadelphia (February 21); Detroit (February 24); Chicago (February 25); and Minneapolis (February 27). The band will be trekking in support of September's Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. ... Lily Allen has announced that she was diagnosed with a heart murmur three months ago, BBC News reports. Radiohead have finally announced some tour dates for 2008, according to Pitchfork. Three detectives accused of covering up evidence in the Notorious B.I.G. case can be added as defendants in a wrongful-death lawsuit the late rapper's family filed against the City of Los Angeles, a judge ruled Monday. The Christopher Wallace family has argued that Los Angeles Police Department Risk Management Group detectives Stanley Nalywaiko and Stuart Maislin, along with detective Steven Katz, "failed to supervise or directly participated in the concealment of evidence in this case." U.S. District Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper — who declared a mistrial in the case two years ago after determining Katz hid statements linking the Notorious B.I.G.'s death to two policemen, David A. Mack and Rafael Perez, said "the attempted concealment of evidence and failure to respond to officer wrongdoing is a central issue in this case," and that the family's request could be granted. The Wallace family's top attorney, Perry R. Sanders Jr., said the ruling "gives the family a chance to prove to the world that police were involved in the murder — and that high officials have covered up for those officers. The family is extremely pleased to have the opportunity to hold accountable some of the key people involved in the coverup." The Wallace family also asked that other defendants be added to the suit — that request was denied, although the estate will be able to file separate suits against the additional individuals. ... Here's what we've got: Usher is hard at work on his new LP with producer Jermaine Dupri, and JD said the singer's new fiancee, Tameka Foster, has inspired at least one new song, "The Realest." "Most of the time with Usher it's about the magic," JD said. "For the first month or so of us being in the studio, it's all mostly conversation to drive me to that point where I go into the room and hear something that clicks. He was like, 'I got the realest woman in the world.' And within the hour, I heard what we should be saying in the hook, and he was like, 'Yeah, let's go.' " ... T.I.'s next album is a battle between his two personas, but the grittier T.I.P. wins out when it comes to the first single. "Big Things Poppin' ", his collaboration with Mannie Fresh, hits radio next week. T.I. told us that the song "is really just me talking to these people who say things and can't back it up." ...
