Fugazi's Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard's Goat join list of great albums celebrating their 20th anniversary.

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's massive Nevermind just a few short weeks away, much attention is being paid to rock's last great era: 1991, a year that was overflowing with important, iconic (and, in some cases, overlooked) albums from bands both big and small. In a lot of ways, it was the year rock truly rocked, and so, to celebrate that fact, MTV News has been asking some of today's biggest acts to remember their favorites form that truly epic year.

So far, we've looked back at Metallica's Black Album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Dinosaur Jr.'s Green Mind, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slint's Spiderland, Pearl Jam's Ten and Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger. Today, we're turning our attention to Fugazi's Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard's Goat — two lesser-known (yet equally important) gems, that are fondly remembered by some high-profile fans.

Fugazi, Steady Diet of Nothing
It starts ominous, like the buzz emanating from a disturbed hornet's nest ("Exit Only") and ends frothing and growling, like a chained Doberman ("KYEO"), yet in between, the second studio album from Washington, D.C., stalwarts Fugazi is a precise, downright surgical exercise in rhythms, interwoven bass and guitars, and — dare we say it — melody. Most noted for its sparse production (which highlighted the lockstep team of bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty) and its overtly political tone ("Dear Justice Letter" was inspired by the departure of liberal judge William J. Brennan from the Supreme Court), Steady Diet of Nothing set the blueprint for the next 10 years of the band's exploits. It also remains a testament to the coiled, colossal power of, above all things, restraint.

As Remembered by Damian Kulash, OK Go: "I grew up in Washington, D.C., and Fugazi was everything. Ian MacKaye, Fugazi, Dischord Records, they were like the Holy Trinity, they were the apostles, they were the entire religion of D.C. Everyone worshipped them, and when Steady Diet of Nothing came out ... Repeater was the first record I had gotten by Fugazi, and Steady Diet was the first one that I could wait for, I could feel it coming out. It was so amazing, it was so musical, it was so timely, it was unlike anything else that was out there. I mean, everything Fugazi did seemed like it was coming out of the earth, you know? Like, the rest of the music in the world was all this crappy, commercial stuff, and they were this. They could not be ignored. The politics, the way they ran D.C., I mean, it was unbelievable. All shows were five bucks, all shows were all ages, it was incredible. I mean, when I was 15, I walked up to Ian MacKaye's house and said, 'Could I borrow some money to start a record label?' And he said, 'Yeah.' Isn't that crazy? Unbelievable."

The Jesus Lizard, Goat
The pounding, primal, pretty-effed-up second album from one of alt-rock's most disturbed (and sorta disturbing) bands, Goat is arguably the best of the Jesus Lizard's many team-ups with producer Steve Albini — a claustrophobic, eternally sludgy thing that's nearly stripped to the core. Still, it packs a punch, thanks in no small part to David Yow's near-patented wild-man yowls, Duane Denison's wobbling, skuzzy guitars, and the downward-spiraling rhythm section of David Wm. Sims and Mac McNeilly. After two more albums on Touch and Go, the Lizard would inexplicably make the leap to Capitol Records in 1996, a stint that lasted until 1999. They called it quits soon after, but to this day, the Jesus Lizard remain an important intersection of art-damaged noise and rock.

As Remembered by Patrick Hallahan, My Morning Jacket: "It's one of the best albums of all time. I think, if I'm not mistaken, it starts off with 'Then Comes Dudley,' 'Mouthbreather,' just so great. I'll never forget the first Jesus Lizard concert I ever went to, they were the tightest rhythm section I'd ever seen, and then they had this f---ing amazing jazz guitarist playing on top of this rhythm section. Ear X-Tacy, that's the name of our music store in Louisville, and I was there when it came out. The Jesus Lizard, Goat. One of the best accomplishments of 1991, and there were a whole lot of them that year."

Minor Threat's Ian MacKaye Outraged By Nike's Major Threat Skate Tour

A Nike-sponsored skateboarding tour the company's dubbed "Major Threat" has Minor Threat's Ian MacKaye ticked.

The man at the front of both Minor Threat and Fugazi, two of Washington, D.C.'s most influential acts, is none too happy about what he deems Nike's co-optation of the Minor Threat logo, as well as the iconic imagery from the band's eight-song 1981 self-titled EP, for the three-date skateboarding event.

The tour's posters depict a bald man sitting on a stoop, head resting on his bended knees, sporting Nike's SB sneakers. The words "Major Threat" run down the poster's right side. Aside from a few aesthetic changes, the poster's a clone of the EP's artwork — which also served as the cover of the group's Complete Discography, released in 1988.

According to MacKaye, the world's biggest producer of athletic footwear never sought his or his label Dischord's permission to reinterpret one of hardcore's most venerated album covers. But then again, it wouldn't have mattered much if it did, because MacKaye never would have given Nike his blessing.

"What the hell were they thinking?" MacKaye, on tour with his current band the Evens, wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. "To set the record straight — Nike never contacted Dischord, nor Minor Threat, to obtain permission to use this imagery, nor was any permission granted. Simply put, Nike stole it and we're not happy about it. We are not yet sure what actions, if any, we can take to stop this campaign."

It's expected, though, that once MacKaye returns from touring later this week, there will be a meeting between MacKaye and the rest of Minor Threat — Lyle Preslar, Brian Baker, Steve Hansgen and Jeff Nelson — to explore what available legal options they could collectively pursue. According to a Dischord spokesperson, "they're all pissed off and offended."

"To longtime fans and supporters of Minor Threat and Dischord, this must seem like just another familiar example of mainstream corporations attempting to assimilate underground culture to turn a buck," reads MacKaye's statement. "However, it is more disheartening to us to think that Nike may be successful in using this imagery to fool kids, just beginning to become familiar with skate culture, underground music and D.I.Y. ideals, into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission."

Minor Threat were the definitive Washington, D.C., hardcore punk band and the godfathers of the straight-edge punk movement of the early 1980s, and MacKaye's Dischord Records has served as a bastion of, and model for, independent music and labels.

The last stop on Nike's Major Threat Tour, sponsored by the company's SB (that's skateboarding) division, hits the Sayreville Skatepark in Sayreville, New Jersey, on Thursday, and will feature demonstrations from skaters Brian Anderson, Omar Salazar and Danny Supa.

By press time, a Nike spokesperson did not return calls seeking comment for this story.

According to Tha Row, Kurupt's first single is "Stalkers." ... Eminem won a "cyber-squatting" lawsuit against a British company that had been using the rapper's likeness and music to sell mobile ringtones and photo messages. The company, Visitair, registered the domain name eminemmobile.com last year to sell the ringtones. As a result of the ruling, the domain name now becomes Eminem's possession, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization, which arbitrated the suit. ...

Scott Weiland got a breather on Friday when his DUI trial was postponed. He's next due in court on May 11, two days before his band Velvet Revolver are set to launch their tour in St. Louis. ... Sting is releasing three separate videos — all shot by Nick Quested — for his new single, "Stolen Car (Take Me Dancing)," with each one for a different mix of the song. One of the mixes is a collaboration with Twista, another features Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas. The main storyline of each video centers around a Brooklyn, New York, warehouse party, with each of the clips showing different events taking place around the festivities. ...

Two days after he was indicted by a grand jury, Michael Jackson released a statement via his Web site asking the media to leave him alone. "As I release this statement there are helicopters hovering above my residence, reporters staking out and photographers lurking behind bushes, running rampant around my compound," wrote Jackson, who is living at a secluded estate in central Florida. "I am respectfully requesting that media organizations please respect my privacy and that of my children." ... In other Jackson news, media outlets covering his case, as well as the singer's lawyers, have asked the California Supreme Court to remove a gag order imposed on both sides. "The protective order bars those who are most knowledgeable about a criminal case that has garnered intense public interest from speaking to the public about the case, cutting off the best sources of truthful, timely information," a petition filed Friday read. ...

The 24th annual CMJ Music Marathon is set for October 13-16 in New York. Daytime events will be held at the Jacob Javits Center and the Westin Hotel in Times Square, while more than 50 venues will host the nightly performances. Participating artists have yet to be announced. ... The world's first charitable music download site will launch in June. Warchildmusic.com, an arm of the War Child organization, which helps children in war-torn countries, will feature exclusive tracks updated each month. D.C. punk band Fugazi have begun selling CDs of their live shows dating back to their maiden gig on September 3, 1987, via their Web site www.fugaziliveseries.com. In keeping with the band's ethos, the albums are reasonably priced at $8 for a single disc and $10 for a double-disc set. ... Liz Phair will headline the Chicks With Attitude Tour, traversing the country from August to September. Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson, Katy Rose and Charlotte Martin will also be aboard for the ride. ...

Best known for their banging but ridiculously titled "Shh ... (Hope Diggy)" two years ago, Apex Theory have not hung it up after the departure of singer Andy Khachaturian. Instead, guitarist Art Karamian will handle vocal duties as the band works on its next album. ... Auf Der Maur, the band fronted by former Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, will support their self-titled debut, due June 1, by opening up for the Offspring. A judge on Thursday (April 22) ordered the jury in Beanie Sigel's attempted-murder trial to continue deliberating despite the jury's assertion that it can't reach a verdict. The judge chastised jurors for not paying attention during the trial after they asked to see all the evidence again. What was expected to be a speedy trial will now enter its third day of deliberations on Friday. Jay-Z, Kanye West, Damon Dash and others in the Roc-A-Fella and State Property camps were once again on hand in court. ... It's not just music, J-Kwon is really living his words. Courtney Love's got more legal trouble on her hands — the managers of her New York condo have filed a lien against her, claiming she owes nearly $18,000 in common charges, late fees and other costs. The singer paid $2.64 million three years ago for her 4,123-square foot apartment in SoHo but told Rolling Stone recently that she's facing foreclosure on both this home and the one she has in Los Angeles. ... On a related note, Dischord is releasing the first demo ever recorded by Minor Threat — the seminal punk group MacKaye fronted before forming the bands Embrace and Fugazi and which coined the term "straight edge" — on CD and 7-inch single. The show will be called, what else, "Evel Knievel: The Rock Opera." ... The Dixie Chicks have been targeted as anti-American and boycotted ever since they took a few potshots at President Bush. Well, icon of Americana Bruce Springsteen has had enough, so he's posted a message on his Web site defending his favorite Chicks. "To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. Gorillaz mastermind Dan "The Automator" Nakamura is producing the next record from New Orleans funk ensemble Galactic. The follow-up to 2000's Late for the Future is due in the fall. ... The Suicide Machines, who will head out on their sixth Vans Warped Tour this summer, will release their fifth album, A Match and Some Gasoline, on June 17. ...

Chimaira, who escaped injury recently when their video set for "Down Again" caught on fire, missed Monday's show in West Springfield, Virginia, after their tour bus slid out of control and crashed into construction barricades on the way to the gig. No one was hurt in the accident and the band will make Tuesday's show in West Columbia, South Carolina. ... In support of their third album, Blackout, (Hed) Planet Earth have lined up six weeks of tour dates, beginning with a headlining show Tuesday (April 22) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On several of the dates, which run though June 14 in Baltimore, they are opening for Godsmack or playing radio-station festivals. ...

The Bouncing Souls will drop Anchor's Away, the follow-up to 2001's How I Spent My Summer Vacation, on August 26. The long-running punk band recently released the double DVD set "Do You Remember? Fifteen Years of the Bouncing Souls" through Chunksaah Records. ... With his brother Chris now gone solo, the Black Crowes' Rich Robinson has resurfaced in a new outfit called Hookah Brown. The band plans to enter the studio in May to begin work on its full-length debut. ...

Blink-182 are in San Diego's Rolling Thunder studios recording the follow-up to 2001's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket with producer Jerry Finn, whose credits include that album and the eponymous debut by side project Box Car Racer. Slated to drop in August or September, Blink's fifth album is expected to include the tentatively titled "Down," "Obvious," "I Miss You" and "I Should Have Got Caught." ... Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden will sing on "Jaded," the first single from Mest's self-titled LP, due in June. Madden will also appear in the video for the song. A Benjiless Mest will hit the Warped Tour trail this summer. ...

Whitney Houston's latest stop on the comeback circuit is a guest spot on the season finale of "Boston Public," in which she attends prom with a student and performs "Try It on My Own" in an effort to allay Aisha's Whitney-induced stage fright. Prom night is May 12 on Fox. ... Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino, who had recently been plagued with the flu, suffered a stressed nerve in his arm during a club date in Bologna, Italy, on April 16, forcing the band to cancel the show. After allowing him two days to recuperate, Interpol played the show and continued their tour. ... Tenacious D have always been about being bigger and better, so instead of releasing a single DVD like most everyone else, they're working on a double-DVD extravaganza. The package will include all of their music videos, comedic episodes shot for HBO, a half-hour band rockumentary, behind-the-scenes footage and a 90-minute concert shot in London. The still-untitled set was directed by Liam Lynch and will be released by year's end. ...

Pet Sounds mastermind Brian Wilson will receive an honorary degree at the June commencement ceremony of Boston's Northeastern University. Despite composing songs like "Be True to Your School" in 1963, the Beach Boys genius never went to college. ... He couldn't hide behind his Internet service provider, and now a man suspected of engaging in illegal file sharing may not be able to hide behind the Constitution, either. The Department of Justice filed a brief on Friday that said the subpoena requested by the Recording Industry Association of America for ISP Verizon Communications to surrender the name of a subscriber allegedly involved in copyright infringement does not violate the constitutional amendment that defines one's right to privacy. Verizon is contesting the subpoena on grounds that it does. A federal judge will ultimately determine the legality of the court order. ...

Fugazi singer Ian MacKaye, They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh and Patti Smith will be among the speakers at the Future of Music Coalition Policy Summit in Washington D.C. on January 5-7. Fugazi Documentary Headed To Home Video

Fugazi, the '80s DIY hardcore punk outfit known for making its shows and albums affordable to fans, will be the subject of an upcoming video documentary, entitled "Instrument" and assembled from old performance and interview footage by indie director Jem Cohen.

"Instrument" will follow Fugazi throughout its career, beginning with the band's formation back in 1987 by Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye in Arlington, Virginia, up to the release of its most recent record, 1998's "End Hits."

The soundtrack to the two-hour Fugazi video will be comprised of previously unreleased material culled from old live shows, demos and unused recording sessions, and will be released a few weeks after the film, which is due out in February/March of 1999.
