Exclusive: Foo Fighters Go For Gold In Grammy Promo

The countdown to the 2012 Grammys is on. Last week, we got a sneak peek at a few promo photos of host LL Cool J and nominees Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. This week, MTV News has landed an exclusive first look at the television ad campaign featuring the 25-time-nominated Foo Fighters, who are up for six Grammys this year, including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Wasting Light.

Check out the complete list of 2012 Grammy nominees. The 30-second teaser, which debuts Tuesday night on CBS, opens with an aerial shot overlooking a bejeweled city, reminiscent of the Emerald City from "Wizard of Oz" but all in gold, not green. Over the opening notes of the Foo track "Bridge Burning," the camera starts to zoom in toward the center of the city, with the gem-like walls exploding into pieces around the shot. From the golden and dusty debris, the Foos emerge individually rocking out to the song. First Taylor Hawkins, then Dave Grohl, followed by Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel and Pat Smear. The promo ends with the Grammy slogan — "We Are Music" — etched into the rock formations. According to a statement from the Recording Academy, the focus of this year's ad campaign is on the "raw emotion in music that connects fans and artists and transcends the Grammy stage. It's that moment where the artist is ready to push the music out and the fan is ready to receive — that's the true power of music." The stylized visuals in the video spots are aimed at exposing and enhancing the emotions of this year's nominees and their songs. In addition to the promo featuring the Foo Fighters, look out for additional spots from TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles with Adele, Bon Iver and Skrillex, as well as the print campaign, which features Grammy winners and current nominees Bruno Mars and Paul McCartney. Grammys Performances: A History Of Awkward Hook-Ups

When it comes to booking talent, the producers behind the Grammy Awards can't resist packing the roster full of as much A-list eye candy as possible. And sometimes that means doubling, tripling or quadrupling up on acts in order to ensure the show doesn't stretch into Monday morning.

The lineup for Sunday night's 54th annual affair is no different, with a sometimes-confounding collection of contemporary and classic artists smooshed together in ways that will only make sense once the show commences. And even then ... The most recent addition is the recently reformed original lineup of surf daddies, the Beach Boys, who will blow the dust off with a helping hand from Foster the People and Maroon 5. Certainly no one is going to gum up Adele's big live-performance comeback by packing the stage with other distracting artists, but only the good lord above knows what it will look like when Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, David Guetta, the Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 summon their Wonder Twin powers for the show's first-ever salute to dance music. The year's obligatory tribute will honor the recently deceased Etta James, and it will pair R&B diva Alicia Keys with blues soul veteran Bonnie Raitt and some more players to be announced later. It wasn't specified at press time, but the most recent release from the Recording Academy also noted that jazz pianist/singer Diana Krall, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, funk saxophonist Maceo Parker and Americana duo the Civil Wars had been added as well. This year's roster bodes well when it comes to WTF moments, but there are plenty more highlights from the ghost of Grammys past: 2011: In a tribute to then-ailing soul icon Aretha Franklin, we saw the sometimes jarring combination of indie darling Florence Welch sharing the stage with country singer Martina McBride, R&B belters Jennifer Hudson and Christina Aguilera, and gospel great Yolanda Adams. And who could forget the sight of Bob Dylan fronting a board-groaning collaborative that also included Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers? Slightly less odd, but still pretty trippy, was the hookup between actress/ part-time movie singer Gwyneth Paltrow, Cee Lo Green and the Henson Company Muppets for a version of Green's ubiquitous "Forget You." 2010: Pairing Lady Gaga and Elton John kind of made sense on paper, but whoever dreamed up the odd combo of Jamie Foxx, T-Pain, hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh and guitar hero Slash for a version of Foxx's "Blame It" should have maybe let that soup cook a bit longer. 2009: We're not saying that the Jonas Brothers didn't hold their own on the stage with Stevie Wonder, but let's just say that the sooner "Burnin' Up" ended and "Superstition" began, the better. 2006: Speaking of good on paper, whatever the conversation was that persuaded Madonna to share the stage with cartoon hip-pop group Gorillaz must have been pretty brave. That year also featured two of the all-time head-scratching Grammy groupings. A tribute to funk pioneer Sly Stone packed the stage with a disparate group that included Joss Stone, John Legend, Fantasia, Maroon 5, Ciara, will.i.am, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Robert Randolph, and lesser-known singers Van Hunt and Devin Lima. Perhaps strangest of all, though, was when the reclusive Sly Stone came out sporting a towering Mohawk and mumbled a few lyrics before walking offstage. And if you had ever told anyone that one day Paul McCartney would share the stage with Linkin Park and Jay-Z for a mash-up of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and the Jay/Park number "Numb/Encore," well, let's just say they might not believe you.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco and Jeff Beck round out list of five former Grammy winners competing in hotly contested category.

Five disparate discs will go head to head in the Best Rock Album category during Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards (or, probably, during the pre-televised ceremony), which is a pretty apt way to sum up a year when the Decemberists topped the Billboard charts and the best-selling rock record — Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More — was actually released in 2010. In short, 2011 didn't make a whole lot of sense.

So we suppose it's even more fitting that neither the Decemberists nor Mumford are actually nominated for Best Rock Album at this year's Grammys. Instead, it's the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Wilco and Jeff Beck who will duke it out for the golden gramophone — and really, each of them has a pretty-realistic shot at winning. They've all got Grammy trophies at home (KOL even took home one of the so-called "Big Four" awards — Record of the Year, for "Use Somebody" — in 2009), and through the years, they've each proven themselves as mainstays when the Recording Academy reveals its list of nominees. All of which means that this year's race is certain to be one of the most-tightly contested in years. Will hard-rock enthusiasts carry the Foos to victory? Can indie-leaning voters help Wilco take home the award? Will purists go all-in on Jeff Beck's Les Paul tribute album? We won't know for sure until the winner is announced Sunday. In the meantime, here's a look at the five nominees for Best Rock Album: Foo Fighters, Wasting Light: Born from humble beginnings (they recorded the disc straight to tape in Dave Grohl's garage), Wasting Light went on to accomplish great things, not only giving the Foos their first-ever #1 debut in the U.S., but revitalizing the band's spirit, which they admitted had been worn down after years on the touring/recording treadmill. In the process, the Foos served notice that they're still formidable two decades on, the rare band as capable of churning out snarling stompers as they are radio-friendly numbers. A win here would give the Foos four Best Rock Album Grammys, twice as many as their nearest competitors (Green Day, U2 and, uh, Sheryl Crow). Jeff Beck, Rock 'n' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul): Part tribute, part rollicking rock workout, Beck honors his idol, the late, great Les Paul, with this effervescent disc. Recorded live at New York's Iridium Jazz Club — where Paul played a weekly slot until his death in August 2009 — on what would've been the guitar pioneer's 95th birthday, it features guest appearances from Brian Setzer, Trombone Shorty and Gary U.S. Bonds and nearly as many memorable moments. Given all that (not to mention the sentimental nature of Grammy voters), this could be the dark-horse favorite to take it all. Kings of Leon, Come Around Sundown: The follow-up to their breakout, Only By the Night, didn't quite match the commercial successes of its predecessor, but that doesn't mean it's a dud. Instead, Sundown finds the brothers (and cousin) Followill coming to terms with their newfound fame, setting down roots and allowing their once bottled-up, garage-proofed rock to flower and flourish (think lap steel, Wurlitzers and horns). It's a solid effort, though it remains to be seen if the Kings can match their post-Night Grammy haul, when they took home three awards (including the aforementioned Record of the Year) based on the strength of the album. Red Hot Chili Peppers, I'm With You: After a two-year hiatus (and a five-year gap between albums), the Chili Peppers returned in 2011 with I'm With You, a record of dizzying highs (not all of them drug-related) and disorienting lows. A spirited album that's most certainly haunted by spirits of past regrets and departed friends, much like the Foo's Wasting Light, the Peppers credit I'm With You — the first to feature guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — with revitalizing their band — which, given both the length and low periods of their amazing career, is definitely saying something. Wilco, The Whole Love: After sounding slightly bored (to some) on 2009's Wilco (The Album), Jeff Tweedy and Co. returned last year with The Whole Love, an album that sees the band rediscovering their adventurous Yankee Hotel Foxtrot/A Ghost is Born period. At turns voluminous, foreboding, inscrutable and drop-dead gorgeous, it not only captures Wilco at their best, but also at a bit of a career crossroads. Regardless of wherever they go from here, we'll definitely be listening. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! LOS ANGELES — One of the oddest moments during Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards might have nothing to do with Adele not winning everything. It could very well end up being the recently announced tribute to electronic music, a performance that will bring together David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, uh ... Foo Fighters. And though one of those things is most certainly not like the other, the combination just doesn't seem all that bizarre to Foos frontman Dave Grohl. He's learned firsthand that the gap between rock and electronica isn't all that wide, as he told MTV News on the red carpet at Friday night's pre-Grammy MusicCares concert.

"Well, Deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here," he said. "I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does ... rocks. "The remix that he did for [Foos' single] 'Rope' is really good, and it's clever; it's not just some bullsh-- dance sh--," he continued. "He actually did a rearrangement ... so when we were asked to perform with him, we said OK." And though Grohl wouldn't divulge any details of what may happen during the Foos' brief excursion into electro ("I think you have to call it 'EDM'," he pointed out), he did let us know what won't: namely, dancing of any sort.

"What do you think, I'm going to f---ing dance?" he laughed. "When we got asked to do it, I said, 'I can't do it. I can't dance.' I think we go on right after Chris Brown or something, and I don't want to dance after Chris Brown has been dancing. Nobody can dance like that guy." Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Grammy Night Belongs To Adele, Foo Fighters

The 54th annual Grammys were supposed to be all about the expected sweep by a titanic soul diva with pain in her heart and a voice for the ages. And while it was most certainly a good night for six-time winner Adele, the death of R&B superstar Whitney Houston on Saturday at the age of 48 cast an unmistakable shadow on the night's events.

"There is no way around this, we've had a death in our family," host LL Cool J said at the top of the show, asking for a prayer in honor of Houston. "Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us ... and although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit." With that, though, the rapper said it was time to celebrate music. Adele got the night started early with a win before the show for Best Pop Vocal Album, then quickly got in the game on the broadcast with a Best Pop Solo Performance win for "Someone Like You." Dressed in a glittering black dress, the long-muted diva broke her silence by saying, "My life changed when I wrote this song," then thanking her doctors for the vocal cord surgery that saved her golden instrument. Her "Rolling in the Deep" also won for Best Short Form Video. Adele's seat didn't get cold, as she was back up for Song of the Year for "Rolling." She took the stage with co-writer Paul Epworth, whom she called the best producer in the world. "He brought me out of my skin to write this record," said Adele, still chomping on gum, likely to keep her throat loose. On her way to a sweep, she also won Record of the Year for "Deep," saying, "This is ridiculous!" and thanking radio programmers for helping make her song a major smash. In one of the most anticipated performances of the night, Adele tried to show she was (almost) all the way back by singing the intro to "Deep" a cappella in a voice as strong and resonant as we all remembered. Seemingly pushing the needle to red, she held nothing back, swooping down and rising to the peak of her abilities to offer proof, as if it were needed, that she deserved everything that came her way Sunday night. Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards The topper was the Album of the Year honor for 21, the multiplatinum disc that made Adele a global superstar. "Thank you so much, thank you," the weeping, ecstatic singer said, holding up the trophy and telling her absent mom, "Mum, girl did good! ... This record is inspired by something that is really normal when everyone's been through it, just a rubbish relationship ... it's been the most life-changing year." The night's biggest nominee, Kanye West, was a no-show at the event but took four hip-hop honors, snatching Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Collaboration for "All of the Lights" from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and sharing Best Rap Performance with Jay-Z for "Otis." Though he missed out on the Best New Artist award, Skrillex scooped up a trio of pre-tel gramophones, including Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. The Foo Fighters were rewarded early as well, nabbing four Grammys, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "White Limo," Best Rock Song for "Walk," Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth." They also got some main-stage action with a Best Rock Performance win for "Walk." Singer Dave Grohl said it was a great honor to win for a record tracked in his garage on analog tape. "It shows that the human element of making music is what's most important. ... It's not about being perfect ... it's not about what goes on in a computer."

In addition to a standout performance, Chris Brown celebrated a major win when he snagged Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. "We got one," Brown said, thanking the Grammys for inviting him back. It was his first time at the awards show since 2009, when his Grammy-eve assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna sent him into exile. Bon Iver's Justin Vernon scored the biggest shocker of the night, besting Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Skrillex and the Band Perry for Best New Artist. "It's really hard to accept this award," Vernon, who had already taken Best Alternative Music Album for his self-titled second release, said about besting the wealth of talent in the room. "When I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I'm a little bit uncomfortable up here. But with that discomfort, I do have a sense of gratitude." Taylor Swift is used to winning, and Sunday night was no different, as the revenge track "Mean" from Speak Now took Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song hours before she played a Depression-era themed version of the song. On a night when attention was turned to a treasure lost, another recently passed soul diva, Amy Winehouse, won a posthumous Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with Tony Bennett on "Body and Soul."

Jennifer Hudson paid dramatic tribute to Houston late in the show, singing a soul-stirring, gospel-tinged version of Whitney's showstopper "I Will Always Love You," accompanied only by piano, ending with the shout-out, "Whitney we love, we love you." It was just one of the many standout performances during the broadcast, kicking off with rock legend Bruce Springsteen, backed by the E Street Band and a full orchestra for his new recession anthem "We Take Care of Our Own." Bruno Mars pulled out his gold lamé suit for a James Brown-inspired soul-revue version of "Runaway Baby," while Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys hooked up to honor Etta James with a cover of "Sunday Kind of Love." Sporting a frizzy wig and ripped jean-jacket look in apparent homage to Houston, Rihanna raved it out for "We Found Love" before being joined on acoustic guitar by her pal Chris Martin of Coldplay for the live debut of his band's "Princess of China," followed by the full band playing "Paradise." It seemed unlikely, but the combo of Brown, Foo Fighters, David Guetta, Lil Wayne and deadmau5 for a tribute to EDM totally worked, even when Foos singer Dave Grohl slowed the vocals to "Rope" down to fit a dance beat. Minaj went all gothic and method actress for the "Exorcist"-themed debut of "Roman Holiday." Making her first awards-show appearance since splitting with Russell Brand, Katy Perry went cybertronic for "E.T.," wearing a futuristic suit, which she stripped off to reveal a shiny superhero costume for her fiery new single, "Part of Me." Other performances included Kelly Clarkson with Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood and Bennett, the Foo Fighters rocking an outdoor tent with "Walk," Maroon 5 and Foster the People joining a reunited Beach Boys for a medley of surf classics and former Beatle Paul McCartney playing his timely new ballad "My Valentine." EDM's road to the mainstream limelight hit a high on Sunday (February 12) when David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, most surprisingly, the Foo Fighters joined together at the 54th Grammy Awards to pay tribute to electronic music.

Introduced by host LL Cool J, Chris Brown made his way through a sea of audience members, donning his best Run DMC gear. Leaving the dancing to the crowd, Breezy crooned to the tune of his David Guetta collaboration "I Can Only Imagine" as the DJ/producer jumped behind his turntables set. But the star power didn't stop there: Lil Wayne appeared shortly after to spit his verse of the duet amid the flashing neon backdrop and jumping fans. Once the song ended, smoke filled the air and the other side of the stage lit up to reveal the Foo Fighters. As they previously revealed to MTV News, the rock group left the dancing to the pros and stuck to what they're good at: rocking out. Marking their second performance of the night, the band performed their single "Rope," before transitioning into Deadmau5's glow-in-the-dark light set. At the time of the performance, the Foos had already nabbed four awards, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, Best Hard/Rock Metal Performance and Best Long Form Music Video. Music's biggest night has come and gone, with Adele and the Foo Fighters walking away with the most Grammy loot. Although Adele bested the Foos with her six Grammy wins compared to their five, the rockers owned the night in their own way, including their part in a tribute to electronic music that also featured David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and deadmau5.

When MTV News caught up with the band on the Grammy red carpet — when they had already won four trophies, including Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "White Limo," Best Rock Song for "Walk," Best Rock Album for Wasting Light and Best Long Form Music Video for "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth" — we chatted them up about their pre-show wins, specifically the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance trophy, which frontman Dave Grohl had expressed earlier was the one he wanted most. "We got it!" Grohl said. "I feel so bad for the Dream Theater guy, because they actually had a metal performance, we didn't, but it's awesome. That's kind of the coolest song we've ever written," he said of the edgy "White Limo." Producer Butch Vig fondly recalls his Wasting Light sessions with the Foos to MTV News. The bandmembers were very relaxed and unaffected by their wins. When we mentioned that their fourth win for Best Rock Album is now the most any rock band has won, they were completely surprised, but grateful nonetheless that they could sit back and focus more on their own performance and the EDM tribute versus the awards. "It's kind of nice. Now we can just sit there and play and not worry about Grammys anymore," Grohl said. "I think if we win them all, we look like di--s." Grohl said the band was amped up for their EDM performance with deadmau5 not only because he made a really "clever" remix of their hit "Rope," but because the onstage collaboration was so unexpected. "We're going to begin with our [version of 'Rope'] and kind of mash up and transition into his," Grohl said. "It's so un-us, though, when you hear it that it's awesome," drummer Taylor Hawkins chimed in. Whitney Houston tribute, performances by Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry, Lady Gaga's snub and Adele lead MTV News' list from Sunday's show.

On Sunday night, the 2012 Grammy Awards went off without a hitch, with a bit of everything for everyone: from a tear-jerking tribute for Whitney Houston to several returns to the spotlight to one mind-boggling performance from the one and only Barbie herself, Nicki Minaj. With a few hours under our belts to reflect on the big show, MTV News is taking a look at several of the biggest moments of the night, including the biggest snubs, the most shocking moment and Adele. MTV News' Christina Garibaldi and Jocelyn Vena as well as MTV Buzzworthy editor Tamar Anitai all sat down after the big show talk about the standout moments of the night.

Biggest Snubs
Despite being the Grammy darling the last few years, Lady Gaga went home empty-handed, not nabbing any awards for her 2011 Born This Way effort. However, she walked into the show holding her own golden scepter, so at least she had something to clutch. Other noticeable snubs belonged to two-time nominee Katy Perry, who despite several years worth of nominations, has yet to take home Grammy gold. Four-time nominee Bruno Mars wore gold when he performed, but he certainly didn't take any home. Bon Iver pulled an Esperanza Spalding on Nicki Minaj when he grabbed the Best New Artist prize at the show. Barbies everywhere probably pegged Nicki as the likely winner for the award, but it was the atmospheric indie rocker who won instead. "It's really hard to accept this award," Vernon said humbly when he stepped on stage. "There's so much talent out here on the stage, and there is a lot of talent that's not here tonight." Shocking Performances
Katy Perry certainly made headlines when she took to the stage to perform her new song, "Part of Me." The scathing breakup track may have served as a thinly veiled kiss-off to Russell Brand as she sang, "You chew me up and spit me up/You took my life/ You drained me down/ But that was then, and this is now." But perhaps no performance will be as dissected as Nicki Minaj's church-themed "Roman Holiday" spectacle. Choreographed by Lady Gaga's former right-hand lady, Laurieann Gibson, Minaj performed an exorcism on her rapper alter-ego, Roman, all in a sea of Catholic references that would even leave the Mother Monster blushing. At the end of the in memoriam part of the show, Jennifer Hudson took the stage to belt out Houston's signature ballad, "I Will Always Love You." Houston, who died the day before the Grammys, was remembered in song by Hudson during the understated and emotional moment that brought the room (and Hudson) to tears. Adele
Sure, a lot of people won awards, and a lot of people performed, but it was the British songstress who was the shiniest star of the night. Having won all six prizes she was up for as well as making her grand return to performing [after vocal surgery in November, Adele proved that you can't keep a good talent down for long.
