There's something for every music fan to reap from this week's crop of new releases, including albums from pop stars, metal bands, an American Idol, hip-hop artists and a long-gone girl group.

Avril Lavigne tries to Let Go of the bubblegum pop-punk sound of her last album and let you know the real Avril with Under My Skin. The first single, "Don't Tell Me," and its accompanying video are already getting heavy rotation on radio and TV.

Meanwhile, Slipknot keep it heavy on the follow-up to 2001's Iowa, with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). On the lighter side of things, former "American Idol" contestant Tamyra Gray, who once dreamed of winning the highly successful reality show, releases her debut album, The Dreamer, this week.

Jessica Simpson will sing the national anthem at this year's Indianapolis 500, which takes place on May 30. ... Just a few days after Hilary Duff announced plans for her upcoming tour, the teenage pop star added a few more dates to her summer trek. Following a couple of newly announced performances in Los Angeles, May 15 at KIIS-FM's Wango Tango show and May 16's benefit concert for Radio Disney, Duff spliced in a pair of shows in the Tri-State Area. On July 25, she'll be in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while on the following day, Duff travels to Uniondale, New York, for a show at Nassau Coliseum. ...

The White Stripes' Jack White and country legend Loretta Lynn will be making the promotional rounds together on the heels of the release of Lynn's new album, Van Lear Rose, which dropped Tuesday. The pair are scheduled to perform their duet "Portland, Oregon" on the "Late Show With David Letterman" on Monday, followed by appearances on the "Today" show and "Larry King Live." White produced, arranged and plays multiple instruments on Lynn's latest album. ... Kiss' blood-spitting bassist, Gene Simmons, will release his version of the Prodigy's 1997 hit "Firestarter" as the first single from his second solo album, A--hole, which comes out June 8. Directors Mark Klasfeld and Tony Perossian shot a video for the song on Sunday in Los Angeles. On Friday and again on May 7, Simmons will guest star as a vengeful father on NBC's "Third Watch." ...

The Beastie Boys are planning to write an anthology book. To be released in October, "Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science" chronicles the creation of "Fight for Your Right," "Hey Ladies," "So What'cha Want," "Sure Shot," "Intergalactic" and more, with photographs taken by Spike Jonze, Danny Clinch and others. The book comes with two CDs of their hits and B-sides. ... Seven albums and 122 tracks of Beastie Boys music was made available to the iTunes music store this week, coinciding with the digital release of the trio's new single, "Ch-Ch-Check It Out." The music in the store also includes 21 exclusive non-album mixes of Beasties songs. ... To celebrate the first anniversary of iTunes, which has sold more than 70 million songs so far, Apple has given its online music store some new features. The service's third generation now features radio charts from more than 1,000 radio stations, on-demand music videos, movie trailers, and the ability to play songs on up to five personal computers. Previously, users could only transfer songs to three computers. ...

The forthcoming book "Fool the World: An Oral History of the Pixies" started out as a project by a playwright who wanted to make a musical out of the alternative rock band's history, and though the book project ultimately came to fruition first, the play is still forthcoming. Author Josh Frank said the musical will premiere in New York in September. "It actually would have been better if they had not reunited," Frank said. "It's harder to produce a musical about rock history when it suddenly becomes the present again. That doesn't happen much! It's an interesting artistic problem." ... White Trash Beautiful, the fourth solo album from Everlast, is due May 25. The LP follows the former House of Pain rapper's last LP, 2000's Eat at Whitey's. ...

Before he joins Lollapalooza, Danger Mouse, the producer behind The Grey Album, is hitting the road for a six-week tour that kicks off this weekend at Coachella and wraps up in June at the Bonnaroo Festival. Danger Mouse and his rhyme partner, Jemini, will also be joined by Money Mark on the tour. ... After talking about it for months, the Dandy Warhols' The Black Album is finally available on the band's Web site. The 11-track LP was supposed to follow the group's 1995 debut, Dandy's Rule OK?, but had been shelved until now. ... Two live offerings are available on the Web site of Mondo Generator, which features ex-Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri. The album Live at the LA Troubadour and Live at Cain's in San Diego and DVD "Live in the U.S. and Europe" will set you back $14 and $22, respectively. ...

04.28.2004

More than just a J-Kwon music video got shot Tuesday in St. Louis — so did a police van parked near the set. The rapper was filming a video for his next single, "Hood Hop," in his hometown when shots were fired from a passing vehicle blocks away. No one was hurt. Police had been brought into the area to control the crowd of fans who had gathered at the shoot. A spokesperson for the rapper had no comment. ...

The recording industry took legal action against another 477 file-sharers Tuesday. Sixty-nine of those suspected of copyright infringement come from 14 different universities in 11 states, including Brown, Georgia Institute of Technology, Gonzaga, Princeton, Texas A&M, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. ... The video for the Beastie Boys' new single, "Ch-Check It Out," was directed by MCA's alter ego, Nathaniel Hornblower. The single hits the airwaves Wednesday (April 28), while the clip is expected to surface on Friday. ...

Kanye West will appear on "Selfish," the first single off Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit, the new album by Slum Village. The group's follow-up to 2002's Trinity (Past, Present and Future) is due June 1 and also features an appearance by Ol' Dirty Bastard on the cut "Dirty." ... Following his foray into the world of fish tacos, Blink-182's Travis Barker will launch his label, LaSalle Records, next month with the release of What Are You Listening To?, the debut album by the Kinison. The second band signed to the imprint, the Nervous Return, have just finished recording their debut and can be seen on the side stage of the upcoming Blink-182/ No Doubt summer tour. Barker's other band, the Transplants, who'll start work on their second album next month, will release their LP on LaSalle. ...

Cat Power, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, J Mascis, Chavez and Har Mar Superstar are joining forces to curse out cancer. They're all set for the F--- Cancer Benefit, taking place May 11 at New York's Bowery Ballroom. Proceeds from the show will benefit Jackie Farry, a staple of the New York indie-rock scene who has worked with the Breeders, Hole, Stereolab, the Lemonheads and Elliott Smith. ... After a quick break following the end of their U.S. tour on May 8 in Baltimore, the Raveonettes will start work on their follow-up to last year's Chain Gang of Love. The Danish band plans to hit the studio in late summer and have the album out by early next year. ... Judas Priest have announced three summer non-Ozzfest shows in North America: July 26 in Nampa, Idaho; August 4 in El Paso, Texas; and August 18 in Toronto. Venues have not yet been announced. Last week, Hatebreed announced they would open at least two shows with Slayer and Priest. ...

The ex-bassist for Soilent Green, Scott Williams, was the victim of a murder/suicide on Monday in Gretna, Louisiana. According to TV news reports, neighbors heard shots, then called police, who arrived to find two dead men, one man with a gunshot wound to the head and the other to the chest. ...

Testament have hired Painmuseum guitarist Mike Chlasciak (ex-Halford) as a temporary tour replacement for Steve Smyth, who quit earlier this month to join Nevermore. Testament continue to work on the follow-up to their last album of new material, 1999's The Gathering. ... There's no question that the cover art for the upcoming Great White compilation album, Double Dose — a shark in flames — is in horrible taste. But don't blame the band, whose stage pyrotechnics burned down the Station nightclub in Rhode Island last year, killing 100. "Great White is disgusted by the cover and certainly did not approve it or the album's release," the group said in a statement. "We are demanding the immediate cancellation of this release and are taking all legal avenues available to stop it." Double Dose is scheduled for a May 11 release. ...

Rapper blows off steam with paintball team while readying new LP.

While he waits for his new album to drop, you might find Everlast wrapping his fingers around the butt of a gun. And if Will Smith crosses his path again, he'll probably splatter him with paint.

Everlast's got nothing personal against Will. But when you live for the game, you gotta kill for the game, and paintball isn't a sport for the weak. Last year, Everlast's squad — the Stoned Assassins — battled Smith's paintball team and emerged victorious.

"[Will Smith's team] had 25 guys and we had 15, but we beat 'em," Everlast said. "We had better guns and were better trained. It was, like, one of Will's first times playing paintball. But I heard after that, he and his boys went out and re-geared up, and he's really into it now full-blast. I'd love to play those guys again."

Between March 19 and 21, the Stoned Assassins — whose ranks also include B-Real from Cypress Hill — will compete in a national paintball tournament in Huntington Beach, California. It will be the team's fifth major competition, and between now and then they'll practice and compete against other teams two days a week.

"I love it," Everlast said. "You've never seen so many 30-year-old men look like 9-year-olds. You physically exhaust yourself, and it's a really healthy way to deal with aggression."

Since he started playing 18 months ago, Everlast discovered that blasting off dozens of rounds of fluorescent paint is an ideal form of stress management, which is exactly what he needs in the weeks before his new record, White Trash Beautiful, arrives on April 27.

Fans of Everlast's rootsy rap-rock hit "What It's Like" will find the album's title track to be pleasantly familiar. Released to radio last week, "White Trash Beautiful" is rooted by a slow, programmed beat and features pensive acoustic guitar plucks, weary strums, subtle keyboard atmospheres and half-sung, half-rapped vocals about isolation and heartache.

"Living in Hollywood, you see a lot of loneliness," he said. "I just trip because I go out to the clubs and everybody's trying to show their ass, but it's really a lonely vibe. I feel more at peace being by myself than in those kinds of crowds. And combine that with being on the road all the time and being in a situation where you've gotta be suspicious of any new people in your life. It just creates real loneliness."

White Trash Beautiful's opener, "Blinded by the Sun," is about domestic abuse, and it draws from Everlast's memories of childhood beatings at the hand of his father. "This Kinda Lonely" is a country-tinged song about casual sex: "The sex is empty/ And this kinda lonely makes it easy to tempt me."

"I have found that when you're not with the person you want to be with, and you're with this other person, it's lonelier than anything you've ever done before," Everlast said. "Once you hit a certain age, you're kind of like, 'Whoa, this isn't as much fun as it used to be. This life really isn't doing it for me anymore.' That kind of lonely ain't good."

On February 25, Everlast will play his first show in three years at an XBox party at the Playboy Mansion. The stripped-down showcase will be part acoustic and will focus on material from White Trash Beautiful.

No, it's not a remix of the Christina Aguilera song. "White Trash Beautiful" is the likely first single from Everlast's long-awaited new album. And, judging by a few lines the bluesy rapper crooned in his cracked-pepper voice over the phone, it's the latest chapter in the gritty book of stories that made the former House of Pain leader a star five years ago.

"White trash beautiful/ Trailer park queen/ She slings hash at the diner from 11 to 5," he sang a cappella. "She married a boy from school/ Thought he was oh so cool/ But all he can do for money is drive/ Out late haulin' freight on Interstate 5/ Tryin' to see home before his baby arrive/ White trash beautiful/ Somethin' you should know/ My heart belongs to you."

Like his breakthrough 1998 hit "What It's Like" from Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, Everlast said "White Trash Beautiful" is a blues-inspired story about the struggles of everyday people. He should know, because Everlast said he's one of those people (see "Where The Heck Has Everlast Been?"). The hard times he's endured since the disappointing sales of 2000's Eat At Whitey's informed the lonely feel of his fourth solo album, tentatively titled White Trash Beautiful and due in early 2004, according to a spokesperson for his new label, Island/Def Jam.

"I was surprised at how long it took me to get a new record deal," said Everlast, who was formerly signed to Tommy Boy Records but found himself in limbo when the label sold its catalog to Warner Bros. last year. He managed to record most of the album on his own dime in New York, his home studio and Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs' Los Angeles studio before he signed the new deal last month.

"I'm adding more influences as I continue along my path. It's that same idea of taking hip-hop and blues, but this record is more country influenced — but it's not country music by any means. I was listening to old Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and, God rest his soul, Johnny Cash, for inspiration as far as the subject matter."

He may not be tapping into Bubba Sparxxx's hick-hop vibe, but Everlast said he feels the country influence came in the subject matter, which deals with many different shades of loneliness. He referred to "Lonely Road" as a "self-explanatory" song about being away from home, and described "This Kind of Lonely" as probably the "most country" song on the album. "It is a lonely record. I drew on some relationships that didn't work out for the songs," he said, lamenting the difficulty of holding together a relationship when half your life is spent on a tour bus. "But even though I think it's lonely and sad, there's hope in it in a corny way."

The album doesn't have many of the overt blues samples he's employed in the past, but Everlast copped to "borrowing" a few guitar licks here and there in what he called "a different kind of sampling." And even though he's still strumming an acoustic guitar, he hasn't forgotten the hardcore, "knucklehead" hip-hop fans who've been with him since he debuted as part of Ice-T's posse nearly 15 years ago. After no luck tracking down ex-Geto Boys member Scarface, Everlast is hoping to grab Talib Kweli to rap on the Alchemist-produced "All Wrong." "I was trying to get both of them, but Scarface is impossible to find," he said. "He so deep underground, underground don't know where he is."

Another rap/blues track that is expected to make the album is "Two Pieces of Drama" and an as-yet-untitled song produced by up-and-coming hip-hop producer Emil. Among the other songs expected to make the album are "Broken," a few tracks produced by his longtime partner, Dante Ross, and "Maybe," which features a string arrangement from Beck's dad, David Campbell.

Despite his storied feud with Eminem two years ago, Everlast said he's not sweating being a part of the same record company as Slim Shady. "The deal with me and Em was a personal issue," he said of the beef, which unleashed a flurry of dis tracks. "I met him and extended a greeting and he reacted in a way I took offense to. I did things rappers do. We beefed. It's over. In a weird way, had dude reached out his hand he'd probably have been talking to one of his biggest fans."

Black Sheep's Dres and Mista Lawnge have reunited and are cooking up a new LP. Black Sheep are best known for their hit "The Choice Is Yours," from their 1991 album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. ... Quiet Riot have reached condition critical. After 28 years of heavy metal madness, the Los Angeles band has decided to quit rioting, drummer Frankie Banali said. On their Web site, www.quietriotforce.com, the band has posted an image of a face peering through a welder's mask and the message: "1983-2003. To our fans: Thank you for 20 years of rock & roll." The comment suggests the band considered its 1983 major-label debut, Metal Health, to be its first record, even though the group had been bashing around the club scene since 1977. ... Fresh from the Sprite Liquid Mix Tour, O.A.R. have lined up a fall trek to support their latest album, Between Now and Then. The six-week outing begins October 17 and culminates with a pair of shows at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on November 28 and 29. ...

9.22.2003

For those whose weeks would not be complete without the tiniest tidbit of Bennifer buzz, the couple was spotted Monday afternoon (September 22) at probate court in the Liberty County Courthouse, near Savannah, Georgia. It's not known what exactly Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck and his brother Casey Affleck were doing there — Ben told paparazzi he was there to get a hunting permit — but that kind of court handles, among other matters, name changes, estate settlements, prenuptial agreements and marriage licenses, though a court spokesperson said that a marriage license was not applied for. Affleck's spokesperson didn't know of the incident when asked, and Lopez's rep didn't return calls by press time. ...

Two separate court dates have been set for Busta Rhymes, stemming from an incident last December during a performance. Celine Giguere, a 21-year-old woman from Rhode Island, claims Busta assaulted her from the stage after she reached up and placed her hand on the rapper's chin, and she filed misdemeanor assault and battery charges against him. Busta, meanwhile, responded by filing a separate assault charge against Giguere. Both trials are set for January 22 in Falls River District Court in Massachusetts. ... A security guard testified in the C-Murder murder trial on Thursday that there was "no doubt in my mind" that the rapper pulled the trigger that killed 16-year-old Steve Thomas. The guard told the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, court that although he didn't see the rapper with a weapon, he did see sparks from a pistol and heard a bang. The guard said that he saw C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, fighting with Thomas, and that he tried to break up the fight, but was too late. He admitted that he originally made up a false description of the killer "because of fear. I was afraid for my life." ...

The Diary of Alicia Keys, the sophomore album from the hip-hop soul singer, has now been pushed to a December 2 release date. It will include the song "Streets of New York," featuring Nas and Rakim, which has been floating around on mixtapes the last few weeks. ... Ex-Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth canceled the remaining three weeks of his tour following an onstage accident that occurred Wednesday in Glenside, Pennsylvania. The overzealous singer was swinging the mic stand over his head during the encore of "Jump" when he conked himself in the head, opening a gash above his eye. Roth was taken to the hospital, where he received 21 stitches. ...

Bay Area punks Rancid will support their just-released sixth album, Indestructible, with a North American tour that begins October 1 in New York. Confirmed dates run through November 22 in Toronto. Following the domestic jaunt the band will head to Japan. ... Actor Adrien Brody, NBA player Kevin Garnett, Redman, Farnsworth Bentley and Faith Evans were among the celebrities who hit Los Angeles' House of Blues on Saturday night for the second date of the Seagram's Gin Live Tour starring Carl Thomas and Lil' Mo. The 25-city trek commenced Friday night in San Francisco and ends on October 25 in Miami. ...

Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger, banjo star Bela Fleck and the Kronos Quartet are among the guests featured on Nelly Furtado's new album, due November 25 and recently re-titled Folklore. The first single, "Powerless (Say What You Want)," is due at radio outlets in early October. ... Timbaland and Magoo have pushed their LP, Under Construction II, back to November 18. Their new single is calle

He dissolved House of Pain after three albums. Then, on the eve of his multiplatinum reinvention with Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, he battled his heart. He rocked with Santana. He feuded with Eminem. Eat at Whitey's sold far less than its predecessor. And then, Everlast disappeared.

Last month's Cypress Hill Smoke Out (see "Smoke-Free Snoop Blows Up Smoke Out; Bone Thugs, Slash Drop In") marked Whitey Ford's first live performance in well over a year, save for a brief appearance on "Last Call With Carson Daly." So just where the heck has Mr. Erik Schrody been?

Well, for starters, he's been putting together a new album with longtime producer Dante Ross. "I've been in hibernation, working on music," Everlast said with a sly grin. "I've just been taking my time, trying to enjoy some living. I had this whole crazy 10 years that happened, between my one band and then starting a solo thing and having my heart problems (see "House Of Pain's Everlast Hospitalized After Cardiac Arrest"). Then as soon as I recover from that, I went out on the road. So I just took a step back and said, 'You know, the world is changing, it's a somber, crazy place right now.' So I'm just kind of absorbing it, writing a lot of songs."

One thing Everlast has been absorbing a lot of is old country and western, from Hank Williams Jr. to Patsy Cline. So much so, in fact, that at this point he'd rather have Willie Nelson on his next album than a hot rapper. "I came into this game being a 'rapper,' I always felt that term was underrated. Why don't you just call [a rapper] a musician or a lyricist? I went from just writing raps [and] got lucky and wrote a hit song or two. Now, I'm really just trying to study songwriting ... I'd love to make a record with Johnny Cash, man. Him and Willie Nelson, for some reason that's where my brain's been at a little bit lately. You know, 'I shot a man just to see him die,' that's gangster. That's just gangster music for the white folks."

Everlast freely admits that moving further into singer/songwriter territory may not be good for business, but he doesn't mind. 2000's Eat at Whitey's delved deeply into soul-searching blues-infused acoustic rock. Moving less than 400,000 copies, the album was unable to duplicate the predominantly hip-hop Whitey Ford Sings the Blues' nearly triple-platinum success. "You hear every artist in the world that has a bad [album] come up with this, that and the other excuse," Everlast said with a smile. "I don't know. I picked a song called 'Black Jesus' to go out to mass corporate radio, I don't think that was a wise choice. I think my label was in the midst of worrying about how much money they were gonna get from Warner Bros. as opposed to putting out records, 'cause [Capone-N-Noreaga] had a record come out that should have been huge and they bricked it."

When Tommy Boy folded into Warner Bros., Everlast had a chance to return to the label that released his pre-House of Pain solo outing, Forever Everlasting, in 1990. He passed. Currently label-less, Everlast says he's going to just make an album, and worry about the rest later.

"The beauty of the situation is, I had a record deal since 1989. I've never been in the position I'm in right now. It's almost like the end of 'Terminator 2' when the highway's going, and you don't know where the highway's gonna end up. And that's a good thing."

When Everlast's fourth solo album does surface, it probably won't contain any songs about Eminem. Everlast felt like Eminem blew him off once, so he dissed him on a Dilated Peoples remix. Eminem responded, Everlast recorded "Whitey's Revenge," Em retaliated again (see "Eminem-Everlast Fight Enters Round Four"), and when ex-House of Pain DJ Lethal weighed in on "TRL," Em attacked Lethal's current group, Limp Bizkit (see "Eminem Disses Limp Bizkit Members On D12 Album"). B-Real, a friend to and fan of both parties, eventually stepped in to mediate.

"[Eminem] is probably my favorite MC out there," B-Real said recently, "and Everlast has been one of my best friends forever and also is one of the most talented MCs. I'm not real close with Em or anything, but I respect him a lot. So it was hard [to watch], and when it got a little bit out of hand, that's when I came in and tried to talk to both of 'em, talk some sense into them. Because they're both my friends and I didn't want to see it go past the microphone, and sometimes, it'll do that."

"I took something personal, I let it be known, he let it be known that he knew, and that's pretty much all that came of it," Everlast explained. "It's what rappers do. The dude is nice [on the mic], it was never about that. I was like, 'Alright, I'm just gonna let my feelings show.' I've never been one to bite my lip."

And what if he ran into Slim Shady today?

"Yo, it depends on how I was approached. But it's not like I'm going to go running across the field to like, choke somebody. I'm a grown man, dude."

Everlast was similarly dismissive when asked about a House of Pain reunion, which he had talked openly about a couple of years ago. "I like the idea more than the reality of it. It just seems like 'the thing to do.' And I always had a problem with that kind of thing. We weren't Fleetwood Mac. We did some good things, I'm proud of what we did, it's just, let it be what it was."

R. Kelly believes he can fly, and now he wants to sting like a bee.

The R&B star has written two tracks about Muhammad Ali that will be the centerpiece of the soundtrack for the highly anticipated film about the boxing legend.

The "Ali" soundtrack, due November 27, includes Kelly's "The World's Greatest" and "Hold On," along with new Ali-inspired material from Alicia Keys ("Fight") and former boxer Everlast ("The Greatest").

"The World's Greatest," a patriotic ballad driven by the beat of a marching drum, is the album's first single, according to a spokesperson for Interscope Records.

Kelly, who scored with the "Space Jam" soundtrack hit "I Believe I Can Fly" in 1996, recently shot a video for "The World's Greatest" in his hometown of Chicago with director Bille Woodruff (Backstreet Boys, Toni Braxton).

"Ali" was directed by Michael Mann ("The Insider," "Heat") and stars Will Smith in the title role (see "Will Smith Gets In Shape For Greenlit 'Ali'"). Jamie Foxx and Jon Voight co-star in the movie, due December 25.

Other soundtrack contributors include Angie Stone, Bilal and newcomer Truth Hurts, who has a cameo in the film and covers the Jerry Butler song "For Your Precious Love."

Aretha Franklin's classic "Ain't No Way" and Al Green's rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" are included, as well.

"Ali" soundtrack track list, according to Interscope:

R. Kelly - "The World's Greatest"

Alicia Keys - "Fight"

R. Kelly - "Hold On"

Al Green featuring Booker T. and the MG's - "A Change Is Gonna Come"

Aretha Franklin - "Ain't No Way"

Bilal - "Sometimes"

Angie Stone - "20 Dollars"

Truth Hurts - "For Your Precious Love"

David Elliot - "Bring It on Home to Me"

Everlast - "The Greatest"

Shawn Kane - "Mistreated"

Salif Keita - "Tomorrow"

The Watchtower Four - "All Along the Watchtower"

Martin Tillman - "Odessa"

HOLLYWOOD, California — With a band called Los Marijuanos you might expect a mellow time, but when members of Cypress Hill, Jane's Addiction, Deftones, Methods of Mayhem and Downset get together and jam, the vibe is anything but laid-back.

The group keeps it burning by jamming through a mix of originals — drawn from the featured artists' various projects — and by munching on covers ranging from Bad Brains to Public Enemy. Although Brownies in New York might seem the most appropriate setting for the group, they've found a home at Tinseltown's Club Vynyl, where they performed only their third gig Monday night.

Los Marijuanos includes Cypress Hill's B-Real, Sen Dog and Bobo; Everlast; Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins; Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter; Methods of Mayhem bassist Marty O'Brien; Downset guitarist Rogelio Lozano; and MCs XL and Mellow Man Ace.

"It's a bunch of cats that like to play together that fortunately all had June and July off," XL said.

Los Marijuanos' gigs are part of a biweekly event called Club Flavor, spearheaded by Bobo to showcase upcoming acts and provide a forum for established artists to get together and rock out.

"It's been a little brainchild of mine for a couple years to have a place that people can come see live music — hip-hop, rock, alternative and different things — and see people from different groups play together," Bobo said. "The first person I called was Stephen Perkins. We go back a little bit, and I asked him if he wanted to jam with me, and it tripped it all from there. A lot of people didn't think it was possible to have all of us on one stage and rehearse and get something together."
The door is open for friends of the Marijuanos to stop by and join in, as Fear Factory bass player Christian Olde Wolbers did Monday night.

One of the, um, high ... lights of the hour-plus, smoke-filled show was a drum duel between Perkins and Bobo, ending with Perkins drumming on O'Brien's bass.

"Sometimes when I double up with other drummers it doesn't work as well, but Bobo and I like to do that because we really get along musically," Perkins said.

Although Los Marijuanos are intense when they're lighting up a stage, there are other areas where they tend to slack off, such as rehearsals.

"They came to my house a few weeks ago," Perkins said, "and we rehearsed a few tunes. We were supposed to have a rehearsal two nights ago, but no one showed up."
XL, whose group Supreme Kourt opened the first Club Flavor show last month, said performing in Los Marijuanos allows the members to re-create their own material and favorite songs in a whole new format.

"It's an opportunity for us to stretch out our material in a way that's different for us," he said. "You might hear a new Cypress Hill song that sounds nothing like it will on their next album, or an Everlast song, or an old-school joint you haven't heard in a long time."
Club Flavor, whose usual night will be Tuesdays, will continue when Cypress Hill hit the road in support of their next album, Bobo said.

"Hopefully it will just be on autopilot and people will just come out 'cause it's the place to be. We won't always be here, but this is our little home."

Eminem Disses Limp Bizkit Members On D12 Album

Rapper expands feud with Everlast on track from group's forthcoming Devil's Night.
By Jennifer Vineyard

The Eminem/Everlast feud has expanded to include Eminem's one-time friends Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit. Eminem has some choice and predictably profane words for the pair on "Girls," a track from the group D12's forthcoming Devil's Night.

Eminem is apparently upset about a comment Lethal made in December during the Limp guys' visit to "TRL." Lethal, who was in House of Pain with Everlast but was also friends with Eminem, at first said of their beef, "They're both men, they'll work it out." But he added that if the two were to take their differences outside the realm of their respective records, "Everlast would definitely win, you know what I mean?"

Em has retaliated with "Girls," his third volley in his war of the words with Everlast. Lethal was supposed to guest on "Quitter," one of Eminem and D12's Everlast-dissing songs, which calls on fans to physically attack the former House of Pain MC. Lethal bowed out, inspiring Em to call him and Durst "cowards" and "sissies" on "Girls," and ridicule their hit "Rollin'": "C'mon dog, it was supposed to be on that song ('Quitter')/ Talking about how bad you hate him/ Now you all on his thong ... You f---ing sissy/ Up onstage screaming how people hate you/ They don't hate you/ They just think you're corny since Christina played you."
Later in the song, Eminem claims he left Durst hanging on purpose when the red-capped singer tried to give him a high five at the MTV Video Music Awards in September — though Em claimed his reason for dissing Durst and Lethal is for comments Lethal made two months later. Eminem also allied himself with Limp Bizkit when he attacked Everlast on the D12 B-side, "Sh-- on You," which was released in October, and "Quitter," released in December.

Representatives for Durst and Lethal did not return phone calls by press time. Devil's Night comes out June 19.
