Hilary Duff Wants To 'Do Something Funny' Or 'Kick Ass' With NBC Development Deal

Hilary DuffHilary Duff is no stranger to working on sitcoms, having started on Disney's "Lizzie McGuire." Now, after launching a successful career in movies and music, she's ready to head back to the small screen, this time for NBC. "Well, right now it's a development deal," she told Tim Kash backstage at "Total Finale Live" Sunday night. "We're going to be working together to try to put a great show together. It's not like I know what the material is going to be yet.

"I get to call all the shots!" the 21-year-old joked. But though she's in control, she doesn't seem to have pinned down any specifics about what she wants to do. "I think I would like to do something funny, so probably a comedy. It's hard to sit here and say, 'I want to be this character and this character.' "I would like to do something funny ... or I would like to kick ass or something," continued the star of "A Cinderella Story" and "Cheaper by the Dozen." "[I'd want to] be some kind of — not a superhero, but some young person that's empowering and that does something no one expects from her, like take care of problems." Through the network deal, Duff will not only work on her own show, but will also get to make cameos and have story lines on already existing shows. And she already has a wish list of guest appearances. "[NBC has] great shows to have arcs on," Duff said. "I would love to do something on 'The Office.' '30 Rock' is great, very funny. Many people have done lots of guest spots on it this season."

Hilary Duff isn't new to starring in her own sitcom. She made a name for herself playing the title character in "Lizzie McGuire" on Disney, and now she's ready to move on from tween fare to take on a more challenging role: a lawyer. The comedy, "Barely Legal," stems from Duff's NBC production deal and revolves around the true story of Kathleen Holtz, who passed the California bar exam in 2007 at age 18 to become the state's youngest lawyer, according to Reuters. Back in November, when Duff appeared on the "TRL" finale, she spoke to MTV News about the deal and shared what sort of work she'd like to do with the network. Sure, everyone expects hot stars like Angelina Jolie (#26), Scarlett Johansson (#34), Penélope Cruz (#30) and the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger (#46) to make Maxim magazine's Hot 100 for 2009. But the men's magazine's annual roster of sexy ladies has also become a home for reality-TV stars, including some girls from "The Hills." After starring in her spin-off, "The City," this year Whitney Port made her big debut at #83. Audrina Patridge, meanwhile, jumped 17 spots from #74 last year to #57 this year. But it's not such good news for Heidi Montag: Despite making music videos in her bikini, the new Mrs. Pratt fell to #81 this year, dropping a whopping 45 spots. And it might be even worse news for Lauren Conrad, who completely fell off the list after making it to #56 on last year's list. Although Maxim's #1 hottest woman in entertainment won't be revealed until Wednesday (May 13), some other big names from the list have already been released. Hilary Duff was named the 31st hottest babe, thanks in part to her role as Bonnie Parker in "The Story of Bonnie and Clyde," due out in 2010. Singer Ciara has her steamy duet with Justin Timberlake to thank for making the list at #32. Funny girl and MTV Movie Awards nominee Anna Faris made the list at #39. "Twilight's" Nikki Reed (#42) and Ashley Greene (#68) also made the list, along with a couple of the Jonas Brothers' favorite ladies: Joe Jonas' current girlfriend, Camilla Belle, is at #72, and ex Taylor Swift is at #50.

It's May — you know what that means. It's getting warm, the flowers are blooming and the time-honored tradition of prom is back again. So get your corsages, turn up the cheesy music and fuel the limos, because this week we're catching up with your favorite stars and helping them relive their prom memories. Hilary Duff was already a working actress when her prom season rolled around, which meant she wasn't in a real high school that had a real prom. Despite already being a red-carpet fixture, she felt like she was missing out on a key milestone.

"I was homeschooled, so I didn't go to a regular prom," she told MTV News. "But I felt like I missed out a little bit." To remedy the situation, Duff decided to have a DIY prom with her best friends. "My girlfriends and my sister, we threw an '80s prom party," she explained. "So we all went out and got, like, vintage prom dresses and they all had to be under $80 and we looked like big, funny cupcakes." Not only did they embrace the decade's decadent fashion, they also cranked up some classic '80s tunes on their boom boxes. "We just danced all night to the Cure. We had fun. We had our own prom." Hilary Duff To Join 'Gossip Girl'

Hilary Duff has signed on for a multi-episode arc on Gossip Girl, according to EW.com. Duff will play a character named Olivia Burke, a movie star who attends New York University in search of a traditional college experience. Blair (Leighton Meester), Dan (Penn Badgley) and Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) were also accepted to NYU, and Duff winds up becoming Vanessa's roommate in the third season of the show, which debuts this fall. Duff told E! News in December that she had become a fan of "Gossip Girl," and her favorite character was Chuck Bass. "I don't know why, because he's so bad and terrible," Duff said. "He is so sad that I feel bad for him," she admitted. According to E! News, newly single Dan, who broke off his relationship with Serena last season, is looking to find love with Olivia and doesn't even know she's famous. Dan, according to E!'s sources, is looking to get serious with Duff's character. At the time, Duff was developing her own pilot for NBC called "Barely Legal." She told E! News, "It's exciting. I've been meeting with writers. I'm ready to get back on TV." Producers eventually passed on "Barely Legal," but producers for "Gossip Girl" soon found a spot for the Disney teen queen on the show. She makes her debut in the fourth episode of the season, scheduled to air on October 5.

Hilary Duff is engaged to hockey player Mike Comrie of the Edmonton Oilers, her rep has confirmed, according to UsMagazine.com. Comrie, 29, popped the question last weekend while the pair were "vacationing in Hawaii," Duff's rep said. "After having been together for over two years, they are very excited to share this happy news. They are thankful for all of your warm wishes."

Duff, 22, who previously dated Joel Madden — who just announced his engagement to Nicole Richie — told Us, "[Comrie's] a great guy. I've never met anyone who could say a bad word about him. He's generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads off, which I need in my life. ... He's unique. I wouldn't want to be with someone who wasn't unique." Duff also told the magazine they have a surprisingly "natural" relationship. "We both have busy jobs and we're both very focused people, so that helps," she said. "Since we are apart so much, it's not like one person is at home waiting for the other." According to People.com, Duff, who has said she read "Hockey for Dummies" to better understand her beau, has become a fixture at his games. She also cheered him on when Comrie played for the Ottawa Senators, where she was joined in the stands by Carrie Underwood, whose fiancé Mike Fisher is on the team. Comrie told Us, "We have fun. We both live such different lives, but it's always fun to support each other and spend time when we get to."

'The Hills' Musical Legacy: Natasha Bedingfield, Lady Gaga And More

Artists from Hilary Duff to Journey owe a debt to 'Laguna Beach' and its spin-off.

Tuesday night (July 13) represents a huge moment in the history of MTV programming and reality television in general. After six seasons, "The Hills" is coming to a close with a two-hour grand-finale event, beginning at 8 p.m. on MTV. It has been a watershed program, as it first established the sort of hyper-real aesthetic that many reality shows (and a handful of fictional dramas) copied. But "The Hills" and its predecessor, "Laguna Beach," also left their mark in the music world. Each of the shows had theme songs that helped spark massive career moves for the artists behind them. The theme song to "Laguna Beach" was Hilary Duff's "Come Clean," co-written by Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks. Though it originally appeared on Duff's 2003 album, Metamorphosis, and was released as a single in early 2004, it really picked up steam once it accompanied the premiere of "Laguna Beach" in September of that year. It peaked at #9 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart and earned Duff a shortlist recommendation (though no actual nomination) for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards. "The Hills" theme song did even better by its artist. When Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" debuted as the tune that introduced the world to "The Hills" in May 2006, it stormed up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #5. In fact, because of its crossover appeal, "Unwritten" became the most-played song on the radio in the United States in 2006. Not bad for a track that was originally released in 2004 on Bedingfield's debut album of the same name. "The Hills" also gave the world some early exposure to Lady Gaga. Before Gaga's debut album, The Fame, took over the airwaves, she performed at a fashion show where Conrad and friend Whitney Port styled her. Gaga was even the subject of a minor plot in that episode, as the zipper of her catsuit broke, forcing Conrad to repair it and save the day. But perhaps the most lasting musical legacy of "The Hills" is actually a moment from "Laguna Beach." The second-season premiere of "Laguna Beach" (which aired in July 2005) featured a scene wherein castmember Stephen Colletti picks Conrad up for a date. The song playing in Stephen's car during the scene? Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," which had yet to receive its second renaissance thanks to the series finale of "The Sopranos" (which didn't air until two years later). Exposure on "Laguna Beach" (along with its appearance on a "Family Guy" episode the same week) sent the track skyrocketing into the iTunes Top 10, an amazing feat for a song that was nearly 25 years old. Actress, singer and entrepreneur Hilary Duff can add another title to her résumé: wife. Duff and her boyfriend Mike Comrie, a hockey player for the Edmonton Oilers, married on Saturday (August 14) in California. UsMagazine.com reports the couple tied the knot at a Montecito mansion in a sunset ceremony. Duff's mother walked the bride down the aisle and sister Haylie served as the actress' maid of honor. Duff swapped vows in a Vera Wang dress in front of 100 guests. The actress and the athlete announced their engagement in February after Comrie popped the question during a vacation in Hawaii. "After having been together for over two years, they are very excited to share this happy news. They are thankful for all of your warm wishes," Duff's rep said at the time. Comrie told "Hockey Night in Canada" in October that the pair first bumped into each other at an Idaho resort. "We were all on the same plane and it was kind of, I guess, maybe a bit of a fluke," Comrie said. "It [was] one of those things where we were all in a group ... we spent the weekend all hanging out." "[Comrie's] a great guy. I've never met anyone who could say a bad word about him. He's generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads off, which I need in my life," Duff gushed to Us last year. On Sunday, Hilary Duff and her hockey-player hubby, Mike Comrie, celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary. But they had even bigger news for their fans over the weekend. Duff announced on her official website that they are expecting their first child. "Hello everyone! This weekend, Mike and I are celebrating our 1 year anniversary! In memory of the special day, we decided to post some of our favorite pictures from our wedding!" the 23-year-old wrote. "I can't believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you're having fun! We also want to share the exciting news that ...... BABY MAKES THREE!!!" She added, "We are extremely happy and ready to start this new chapter of our lives. Thanks to everyone for the continued love and support throughout the years! Wow! I am just overwhelmed by all of the wonderful messages everyone is sending! Thank you so much! Big hugs! Xxo" Duff, who rose to fame on the Disney Channel playing Lizzie McGuire, has gone on to become a Hollywood mogul. She met the Edmonton Oilers star in 2009. "[Comrie's] a great guy. Hilary Duff is a busy mom-to-be. The former Disney star, who is more than four months pregnant, is positively glowing as she promotes her second novel, "Devoted," which hits bookstores Tuesday (October 11). The book is a supernatural tale about love, destiny and adventure and picks up right where she left off in her first book, "Elixir." The best-selling author isn't just busy writing the third installment of her book series; she's also gearing up to be a first-time mom. And other than the lack of sleep the past few months, pregnancy has been a smooth ride so far.

"I feel really good. It's been pretty easy, and I haven't gotten sick at all, and I don't have too many cravings," Duff told MTV News. "It's so different. It's literally like an alien has taken over your body. One day I'll have a good day, and one day I'll have a bad day, and it kinda goes like that." The former "Lizzie McGuire" star is eagerly awaiting the news of the sex of her baby, but she's holding out for two special people to be there to share in her excitement. "I can already find out, but I want my mom and my sister to be there, but they've both been out of town. When they are both in the same city and we're all there, then we'll find out," Duff said. We're not sure Duff can wait much longer. "I'm going crazy! Pregnancy is kind of boring. There's not too much you can do, so those dates are very important to you, so you count down." What does Duff think she and professional hockey player husband Mike Comrie will be having? "Everyone else says it's a girl, but I think it's a boy," Duff said. "I'd be happy with a girl, but my sister's like, 'You can't keep saying that, because then when it's a girl, everyone's gonna be like, 'You really wanted a boy!' I don't care what I get, but every time I think about it or dream about it, I see a boy." Duff, who plans to "take a break" from having kids after her pregnancy, is now on to the hardest part: picking out a name. "If we give the baby kind of a unique name, we need to give it a normal middle name in case it hates it and wants to like fit in better and then maybe we just need to go totally traditional," Duff said.
