Brody Dalle Gets 'Outside The Punk-Rock Box' With New Band Spinnerette

Former Distillers singer/guitarist will work on LP over the summer.

Names dropped by Brody Dalle during the course of one 22-minute interview about her new band, Spinnerette: Roky Erickson, Devo, Prince, Django Reinhardt, the Gun Club, My Bloody Valentine, Black Flag, Cyndi Lauper and Tom Petty.

And though she's talking about her influences, she's quick to point out that the band — whose formation she announced to the world late last month via SpinneretteMusic.com — "isn't going to be that far removed" from her previous outfit, the Distillers. But there's already been one seismic shift that she'll freely admit to: Spinnerette are going to be her project.

"It's gonna be very different — I've moved outside the punk-rock box," she said. "I want to work harder than I ever have before. I kind of shunned that with the Distillers; I was afraid of what it could be. I didn't want to come across as some pop star or something. I'm not saying I want anything to do with that now, but I've sort of grown the balls to own it now."

Spinnerette formed in the wake of the Distillers' slow disintegration over the past two years. The Distillers' last album, Coral Fang, hit in 2003 (see "Distillers Promise Refinement, Experimentation On Biting New LP"), and after touring in support of the disc, the group fell apart, a process documented in a spate of very public Internet posts. The new band encompasses four very hectic years in Dalle's life, a period during which she married Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and gave birth to their daughter, Camille Harley Homme.

"By the time this record comes out, it will be five years since I last released a record," she said. "I still record on tapes, and I've got, like, 50 hours of stuff. It's a lot of music to go through, and that's why it's taken me so long.

"Plus, having a baby takes awhile too," she continued. "Has it changed me? Yeah, I mean, it's made me more aware of my surroundings, and it's made me a little bit more sensitive. I'm not the hard, cold bitch I used to be."

Dalle is scheduled to enter the studio in June with guitarist/producer/QOTSA member Alain Johannes and her former Distillers mate Tony Bevilacqua (the three, plus two other super-secret musicians, make up Spinnerette). They will spend the summer working on the band's debut disc.

Dalle is hesitant to say just what the music she's been making will sound like: The one demo currently streaming on the band's site — a song called "Case of the Swirls" — was written on a Wurlitzer organ and transcribed to the guitar by Johannes, but don't take that as a hint of things to come.

"It's a little more in-your-face — it's a bit of a cacophony, but it's all coming together," Dalle said. "In the Distillers, I didn't want to do anything too drastic or anything too tasteful. I could've put more into Coral Fang, but I held back deliberately. And [producer] Gil Norton would be like, 'Why don't we put some tambourines here,' and I was like, 'No f---ing way. Tambourines? F--- you!' I didn't want to mess with the sound. I wanted it to be as raw as possible."

And that's one way Spinnerette and the Distillers most certainly won't be different. Though she's grown as a person and an artist, Dalle is still dedicated to making the most visceral, honest and, well, brutal rock she can. Which is why, when asked if her new album will sound more refined, she cackles, pauses and then strikes:

"I hate that word. I hate when a press release says, 'Oh, this band has matured and refined themselves,' " she sneered. "If I had to describe it, I'd say it's 're-smarted.' Instead of retarded, call it re-smarted. I like that word."

Little queen is due in January; couple's engagement is also confirmed.

Britney who? Just days after the princess of pop announced she had given birth to a happy, healthy junior Federline, the world of rock answered back with a biological bombshell that definitely raises the bar for musician-on-musician coupling: Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and Distillers lead singer Brody Dalle are expecting their first child.

On Friday (September 16), a spokesperson for Dalle confirmed that she is indeed pregnant with Homme's child, and then upped the ante by adding that the couple recently became engaged, too.

The announcements ended months of speculation on both topics — particularly the issue of Dalle's pregnancy, rumors of which begun to swirl last month when a series of photographs popped up on the Internet, purporting to show a very pregnant Distillers frontwoman backstage at an Eagles of Death Metal show.

Yet despite all the chatter, the couple remained silent. Dalle does few interviews, and Homme has largely kept mum about their relationship, only recently confirming that the two were even an item (see"Queens of the Stone Age: A Stone Unturned"). But a member of his inner circle was more than happy to talk about the couple: Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes, who actually spilled the beans on both their engagement and their impending child when MTV News spoke to him earlier this week.

"They are honestly the most beautiful couple you could ever see," Hughes said. "Joshua and Brody are expecting their first little baby girl [Dalle's spokesperson would not confirm the sex of their child]. And Brody's a glowing, beautiful bride-to-be with child. They're going to be married. They call each other 'momma' and 'daddy.' Brody is a beautiful, expecting woman who is also the queen of rock and roll, in my opinion. She's almost five months pregnant. Joshua truly is a family man"

Hughes went on to say that he had even written a song for the couple, called "The Ballad of Queen B and Baby Duck" (the latter is Homme's nickname), and will include it on the new Eagles of Death Metal Album, Death by Sexy, which is due in January. The song follows the couple from their rather rocky beginning (Dalle was married to Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong when she and Homme met) to their current state as rock's reigning parents-to-be.

"It's a fairy tale, love-charm song. Their relationship was hard to be in for those two, considering their public personas and where it came from and the circumstances through which she left her husband," Hughes said. "Joshua and Brody went out of their way to do everything right. There was no stealing of any girlfriend. It was very sweet. When people want to have children, when they want to start a family, that's kind of an amazing thing in this world today — when a pregnancy isn't accidental and they really form that bond, it's a beautiful thing."

Radiohead fans have a new reason to rejoice. The band headed back into the studio on Thursday to work on the follow-up to 2003's Hail to the Thief, according to a brief post by frontman Thom Yorke on the band's Web site: "We are going into a proper studio on Thursday (for a leettle while) with 192 faders which is a lot of choice a bit like the supermarket and it may all go off before we get to it so we have to eat quick. We will post more when we get there." ...

Six limited-edition album posters signed by Gwen Stefani will be auctioned off on eBay beginning August 28 to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The artwork, created to promote the No Doubt frontwoman's solo disc, Love, Angel, Music, Baby, was done by Japanese artist Shinjuko and features the platinum-haired singer surrounded by her pals the Harajuku Girls. ... My Chemical Romance will make a special appearance on Saturday at New York club Luke & Leroy's — as DJs. On Thursday, less than a week after announcing he'd headline the Ozzfest no more, Ozzy Osbourne posted a statement on his Web site to set a few things straight. "After 10 years, I've decided that this year will be my last as the headlining act on Ozzfest," the statement reads. "The Ozzfest is well-established now and I feel it's time for me to hand the reigns off to someone else. However, I will be performing at a few select Ozzfest shows next year. Despite the rumors, I don't have permanent throat problems. The truth is that after 11 straight summers on the road, I would just love to finally take a summer holiday with my wife. You haven't heard the last from me." ... Punk outfit the Distillers are in a state of limbo at the moment. On Thursday night, bassist Ryan Sinn announced he'd be taking leave of the band in a posting to the Distillers' MySpace page — one that has since been demolished completely. "I'm no longer part of the life I knew so recently," the message read. "The Distillers are no more and it feels like a weight has been lifted. However, I'll never get rid of the disgust inside from it all." Sinn's defection follows just seven months after drummer Andy Granelli quit — effectively leaving singer/guitarist Brody Dalle the band's only remaining member. Calls for comment on the situation from the Distillers' label were not returned by press time. ...

An all-star cast of alternative rockers has banded together for the UNICEF charity-benefit single "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?" Known as the North American Prevention Initiative, the collective features Beck, Sum 41's Steve Jocz , the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O, and members of the Postal Service, the Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Sloan, Wolf Parade and Feist. The track was written and produced by ex-Unicorns singer Nicholas Diamonds and Redd Kross' Steven McDonald. ... Seattle rock stalwarts Mudhoney, who pretty much invented grunge back in 1988 with their song "Touch Me I'm Sick," are prepping a new album for Sea-town's Sub Pop Records. The new album features Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Guy Madison and Dan Peters, and is being recorded at three different studios by three different producers, including Modest Mouse knob-twiddler Phil Ek. There's no title or release date for the new disc — the band's first since 2002's Since We've Become Translucent — and let's hope the recording process isn't getting in the way of Arm's day job as the manager of Sub Pop's warehouse. ...

Randy "Biscuit" Turner, frontman of formative early '80s punk-rock band the Big Boys, was found dead in his home in Texas on Thursday — the day after he was featured on the cover of The Austin Chronicle. His body was discovered by the writer of the piece, and according to the Chronicle, the medical examiner's initial autopsy report attributes the cause of death to "gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to cirrhosis associated with chronic [alcohol] abuse." The Big Boys split in the mid-'80s, and in recent years, Turner had worked successfully as an artist — sadly, the Austin gallery that was to host his art installation "Mental Volcano" this weekend will instead host an informal wake Friday (August 19) night. Turner was 56. ... Canadian popsters the New Pornographers are gearing up for the release of their new album, Twin Cinema, by launching a North American tour. After a series of record-store performances in late August, the Pornographers' tour officially gets under way September 22 in Victoria, British Columbia, and runs through the end of October. Twin Cinema hits stores on Tuesday. ...

Britney Spears scored a ton of gender-neutral presents at her baby shower on August 6, including a white wrought-iron bassinet, car seat, stroller, infant bathtub and lots of stuffed animals. "Everyone really outdid themselves," the singer told People magazine, which has a spread of photos from the scene in its next issue, out Friday. Only 19 guests attended the Moroccan-themed shindig, which was held under a bamboo tent set in front of Spears' Malibu, California, home. "It was so beautiful that throughout the entire night, I kept forgetting we were in my front yard," Spears told the mag. Friends and family were treated to gift bags containing the singer's Curious perfume as well as necklaces made from their own baby photos. It was "everything I envisioned," Spears said. ...

"American Idol" dropout Mario Vazquez has signed a deal with J Records, marking the first time the label has signed an "Idol" contestant who was not the winner or runner-up. Vazquez has just begun work on the as-yet-untitled album, which is due in the spring, according to the label. ... Eminem's week just keeps getting better. Just two days after announcing he'd be canceling the European leg of the Anger Management 3 Tour to permit his recovery from exhaustion, Marshall's aunt and uncle have filed a lawsuit against him. According to Kevin Green, the attorney for Em's relations, Jack and Betty Schmitt, "Marshall's looking to evict them from their house," one he had built for them three years ago in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Green said the couple uprooted from Missouri to do so, at Em's behest. The suit seeks more than $350,000 — the cost of the house — as well as money they claim their nephew owes them. "He told them, 'I'll pay you a salary for five years,' " said Green; the promised figure was an annual payment of $100,000. "He failed to do that. Betty and Jack support Marshall, but the main issue is the home. He promised he would transfer the [home's title over] to their name after one year, and he failed to do so as promised, and continues not to do so." ...

Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child and Diana Ross are headlining the World Music Awards, which will also include performances by Bon Jovi and Santana. The show, which will be televised in 160 countries, will take place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on August 31 and will be broadcast Stateside September 13 on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. ... Game, Busta Rhymes, Twista and Trick Daddy are among the guests slated for Crazee and Confuzed, the debut album from Miami rapper Stacks, due in early 2006. On September 13, the nine-year anniversary of Tupac Shakur's death, a seven-foot bronze memorial statue of the rapper will be unveiled at the newly opened Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, will speak at the ceremony. A week later, the second album based on Tupac's poetry, The Rose, Vol. 2., will hit stores. Unlike the first, which featured readings of his poems, this compilation will see rappers like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, the Outlawz and Digital Underground's Shock-G reworking the poetry into songs. ... Meanwhile, some rare Tupac concert footage is about to be released as well. The never-before-seen, uncensored "Tupac Shakur: Live at the House of Blues," shot in Los Angeles on July 4, 1996, is now due in early October, and will be released as both a DVD and UMD, which will play on the Sony PlayStation Portable game device. Kevin Federline — a.k.a. Mr. Britney Spears — shows he's a real romantic in a cover story in the March issue of Details (his more famous wife also takes part). (Click for photos from Details.) In it, we discover he likes to use the word "ass" a lot, Spears sometimes uses the odd phrase "motherchucker," and she thinks Rolling Stone and Us Weekly publisher Jann Wenner is a "big old fat man." The couple also insist their love is for real. "That's why I married him, because he's not a shallow mother----er Hollywood actor guy," Spears said. "She's f---ing proud of me," Federline boasted. "I could be sitting at home doing nothing. I could be playing video games." Speaking of doing nothing, Federline said that he's giving up dancing as a job because "I've done it, dude." Instead, he hopes to start a clothing company called Pair a Dice, because the couple have matching dice tattoos. "I want to do some cool casual stuff, like jeans and T-shirts and sweat suits," he told the magazine. "And then I also want to hit the flip side — high-end, classy stuff, too." ... Christian Bale, Katie Holmes, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and others will reprise their film roles from the upcoming "Batman Begins" in the video game of the same name. Due June 17, the game challenges players to step into the shadows of Gotham City's perilous criminal underworld as DC Comics' legendary Dark Knight, played by Bale, and use fear as their ultimate weapon. ... R&B singer D'Angelo's court date has been pushed back once again. The Grammy-winning artist was scheduled to be arraigned on charges of drunk driving and drug possession last Friday, but the date has been postponed to April 13. The charges stem from a January 9 incident in which D'Angelo was stopped for a traffic violation near his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. At the stop, his car was searched and officers found substances believed to be cocaine and marijuana. ...

Slim Thug's major-label debut, Already Platinum, has been pushed back to March. The Houston MC has decided to return to the studio to record new material after songs from the original version of the album were leaked. No word yet on an exact release date. ... Pete Rock, Rupee and Doug E. Fresh will lead a host of hip-hoppers at the Rap for Relief tsunami benefit concert at New York's B.B. King's Blues Club on February 22. Other acts scheduled to perform include Rahzel, Buckshot, J-Live, the High & Mighty, C-Rayz Walz and Sean Price. All proceeds from the concert will go to the Red Cross. Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle might have killer pipes and a tattoo that prominently displays the f-word, but one thing she doesn't have anymore is a drummer. In a post on TheDistillers.com, Andy Granelli — who played drums on the Distillers' most recent record, 2003's Coral Fang — wrote that he was leaving the group to devote more time to his other band, Darker My Love. "I am writing in to say that I have officially quit the Distillers," Granelli said. "I started Darker My Love ... as an outlet for us to play exactly what we wanted to, without compromise. So I feel now it is my time to go back to that." A spokesperson for the band had no information on who would be replacing Granelli. ... Vanessa Williams will show some love for her country when she sings the national anthem at NASCAR's Daytona 500 on Sunday. The singer will also take part in a tribute to America, during which she will sing "America the Beautiful." Joining her in the tribute will be Brian Wilson, Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik, and Clint Black. ...

With the biggest awards show in the film industry less than two weeks away, "The Aviator" took home the top honor of Best Film at England's equivalent of the Oscars. The Howard Hughes biopic also garnered the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award for Cate Blanchett, and several technical awards at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards on Saturday. Jamie Foxx won Best Actor for "Ray," while "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" won Orange Film of the Year, the only award chosen by the general public. ... The Clash's Joe Strummer, who died in 2002 of a heart attack, was honored on Saturday with a train named for him in the U.K., according to The Associated Press. The Strummer train, dedicated on Saturday at a railway station in Bristol, joins a long list of trains that have been named after famous people for the last 200 years in England. ...

For Valentine's Day, Britney Spears expressed her romantic side by posting a letter Friday (February 11) on her fan site about her life with Kevin Federline. "I fall more and more in love with Kevin every day," she wrote. "We've been away from each other for a week now and I think I'm losing my mind! It's the longest we've been apart from one another." But it's Federline's work schedule keeping them apart, she says, not hers. She's been at home in Kentwood, Louisiana, with her mother while her husband has been posing for the March issue of Details. "The pictures are so hot!" she bragged. "Stay away, girls!" In the meantime, Spears has been playing mom by shopping for "the cutest dresses" for Kori, Federline's daughter with Shar Jackson, as well as dressing her dogs in Von Dutch clothing ("I think my dogs are so much cuter than Tinkerbell"). The company reportedly ran an ad featuring Sixx in the sports magazine Thrasher without informing the musician. The jury awarded Sixx $600,000 plus interest. ... "Nirvana - Nevermind: Classic Album," a DVD documenting the making of Nirvana's breakthrough release, is due March 22. Brandy's as-yet-untitled fourth album is slated for a June 22 release. The day after being released from a Massachusetts jail, Bobby Brown stood before a family court judge once again on Friday to answer her questions on how he plans to make future child-support payments to the woman whose complaint to the court put him in jail for a day on Wednesday. Brown had paid the $63,500 he owed in order to get out of jail, but April's payment is due on Thursday. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns, will embark on the month-long Honeymoon From Hell Tour, beginning April 30 in Clifton Park, New York. The trek supports the band's debut, Here Come the Brides, which dropped March 9. ... Between 1989 and 1992, the pioneering British metal band Venom existed with only two original members, guitarist Mantas and drummer Abaddon. For Venom's upcoming, yet-untitled disc, founding bassist/vocalist Cronos has returned, but the other two dudes have bailed. Seal will launch a three-week tour on April 16 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada; dates run through May 7 in Gulfport, Mississippi. Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago will release Smitten, the second album by his side project the Martinis, on June 8. Southern California metalcore band Atreyu will release their second full-length album, The Curse, on June 29. This ain't no paltry remix EP. Mariah Carey gets it — bigger is better. So Remixes delivers exactly what its title promises: two discs full of reworkings of Carey's songs, including "Heartbreaker" featuring Da Brat and Missy Elliott, "The One" featuring Bone Crusher and "Thank God I Found You" co-starring Joe and Nas.

"American Idol" 's #2 man, Clay Aiken, releases Measure of a Man, featuring the single "This Is the Night." And for more, though drastically less theatrical pop, Sessions@AOL is a collection of in-studio live recordings by Coldplay ("The Scientist"), Missy Elliott ("Work It"), Avril Lavigne ("Mobile") and the Roots ("Break You Off").

This week, Travis recall their 12 Memories, one of which is the lead cut, "Re-Offender," a song about domestic abuse, and its accompanying video, which curiously portrays the guys beating the crap out of each other. Meanwhile, the Distillers bare their Coral Fang, and Phish keyboard player Page McConnell's side project, Vida Blue, sample "Aunt Esther," played by the late LaWanda Page from the TV show "Sanford and Son," on The Illustrated Band.

Me'Shell NdegéOcello sings about love on Comfort Woman while Ursula Rucker, the poet best-known for closing most of the Roots' albums, releases her second album, Silver or Lead. Raphael Saadiq releases All Hits at the House of Blues, a live, two-disc set of material with his former group Tony! Toni! Toné! and his solo album, Instant Vintage. Orchestral composer Michael Kamen is planning to reunite with Metallica for another album. In the Hollywood Reporter interview in which he revealed those plans, Kamen also confessed to be living with multiple sclerosis for the past six years, though he said it isn't slowing him down. ... Distillers Promise Refinement, Experimentation On Biting New LP

The Distillers' major-label debut promises to be a collection punk fans can really sink their teeth into ... or vice versa.

With the addition of guitarist Tony Bevilacqua, the newly formed quartet began recording the dozen or so songs it has written for Coral Fang, the follow-up to last year's Sing Sing Death House, last week at the Site, a studio in San Rafael, California. Gil Norton, who's produced albums for the Pixies and Foo Fighters, and has most recently worked on the new Dashboard Confessional LP, is at the helm.

One of the things the follow-up to a breakthrough album affords a band is more time. While Sing Sing and the members' 2002 eponymous debut were recorded in a couple of weeks between tours, the female-fronted punk group can take its time with Coral Fang. And taking one's time in the studio almost always results in a musical stretch.

"We kinda wanted to do something different, just not the same-old, same-old," drummer Andy Outbreak said. "Something that's more exciting, but at the same time, still who we are — still the Distillers. Don't expect your typical punk rock record from us. We've kind of shown we can do that, so let's explore more of the different styles of music that we're into."

Outbreak, Bevilacqua, bassist Ryan Sinn and singer Brody Armstrong hope to finish recording Coral Fang before hitching their wagon to the Lollapalooza trek from the July 3 kickoff through August 10. The album is expected to drop in October.

Coral Fang was named for one of the album's tracks, though Outbreak won't say much more than that of the title. And it's still to be determined whether the LP will include a cover of the "Walls Come Tumbling Down" by Paul Weller's post-Jam project, the Style Council.

Outbreak did, however, reference a song about one of the band's most preferred metropolises. But just when you're thinking there are already too many tunes about New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago, the Distillers pitch one of those curveballs Outbreak was bragging about earlier.

"It's one of our favorite cities," he said of the song "Cincinnati." "Every time we've been there, it's been a good experience. The people there are really cool. It's just so much different than California."

Besides the extended time frame, the other major difference between Coral Fang and Sing Sing is personal. Part of the media's attention toward the LP centered on Brody Armstrong's marriage to fellow funny-haired rocker, Rancid guitarist Tim Armstrong (see "The Distillers: How Stella Got Her Punk Back"). In the time since, however, the couple divorced.

While Outbreak said that the breakup hasn't affected the Distillers' music, it has given them a more honest perspective of the scene. With their singer wed to a member of Rancid and the band signed with Epitaph Records, the Distillers were embraced by all aspects of the "hardcore mafia." That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. "The thing that was a real bummer was the way some people were treating us," Outbreak said. "There was definitely a change in attitude in a lot of people and it just goes to show you that those people aren't your friends. That was a bigger letdown for all of us than anything else ... It definitely gave us some perspective of where we stand with certain people."

The annual punk-rock summer camp that is the Vans Warped Tour will take its ninth lap around the country this summer with the Used, Simple Plan, Rancid and the Distillers on board.

This year's tour kicks off on June 19 in Boise, Idaho, and wraps up almost two months later on August 10 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Hardcore heroes AFI, Pennywise, Glassjaw and Face to Face are also slotted for the main stage. A complete itinerary and lineup have yet to be firmed up, but complete details are expected next week.

The announced acts are no strangers to Warped life. Rancid, AFI, Pennywise, the Distillers and Face to Face are longtime Warped veterans, while the Used, Simple Plan and Glassjaw toured on Warped last year.

Rock's most powerful chicks will hit the road together when No Doubt, Garbage and the Distillers kick off their tour October 9 in Minneapolis. Though the itinerary has not been finalized, a spokesperson said the arena outing will wrap around Thanksgiving. ... While in Jamaica for a performance at the 2002 Reggae Sumfest over the weekend, Ja Rule negotiated a plea bargain in an obscenity case stemming from his performance at last year's Sumfest. Ja plans to plead guilty and is expected to pay a fine of roughly $80. ...

Ja Rule, along with Busta Rhymes, Parliament/Funkadelic, James Brown, Stone Temple Pilots, Wyclef Jean, Sevendust, Bad Religion and Melissa Etheridge, among others, will play the Street Scene Festival in downtown San Diego from September 6 to 8. ... Before he hits the Street scene, Busta will join Default, Filter and Run-D.M.C. on the bill at this year's Gravity Games, which run from July 31 to August 4 in Cleveland.
