Kings Of Leon, Depeche Mode Heat Up Soggy Lollapalooza

Kid Cudi, the Knux, Gaslight Anthem also make a splash on a day plagued by storms.

CHICAGO -- Somewhere in Chicago on Friday night, hopefully dry and warm, you can bet that Perry Farrell was grinning ear-to-ear. Despite a persistent all-day rain that turned the massive Lollapalooza fairground along the Chicago waterfront into a slippery mudbog worthy of Woodstock, the musical mash-up spirit that the festival's co-founder has been chasing for nearly 20 years made a strong showing.

As the rain finally let up in time for the headliners to take the stage, on the north end, the battling band of brothers (and cousin) Kings Of Leon were making the most of their third go-round at the fest, pumping out their muscular Southern boogie to an adoring sea of fans. Meanwhile, at the other end, British synth pop veterans Depeche Mode moved muddy feet with a classic set of keyboard anthems, including "Enjoy the Silence" and thunderous set-closer "Personal Jesus."

But it was what was happening in between the two stages that surely made Farrell smile. The Jane's Addiction frontman, who has long harbored a fascination with techo/rave dance culture, expanded his dance area this year and created a party space that drew huge crowds all day. Despite two world-famous headliners performing just yards away in either direction, the large leafy area was packed with thousands of bodies gyrating and throwing their hands in the air ecstatically to thumping techno, just as they had earlier in the day to jeep beat hip-hop and old school dance tunes.

However, that's not what the whole day was like. With one of the weaker first-day line-ups in the reborn festival's recent history, the day began slowly in a steady drizzle with California's the Henry Clay People warming up a sparse crowd with shambling indie-rock tunes about the apocalypse and a story about an urn of a late friend's ashes they are touring with. Matching the grey drizzle perfectly on an adjacent stage was were pastoral, beardy plaints of the Other Lives.

Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra brought none of those daffodil vibes, though, crunching bones with driving rockers like "In My Teeth," "Shake It Out" and their breakthrough hit, "I've Got Friends." They ended with the surging/swooning epic "Everything To Nothing" just as the rain really began to fall.

Once the skies opened up around midday -- and all those brightly colored mohawks began to sag and the lunchtime beers became a terrible idea -- the soggy masses had New Brunswick, New Jersey's Gaslight Anthem to keep their spirits up. Channeling an inked-up Springsteen, singer Brian Fallon wove his stirring tales of busted hearts and small town girls with their sailor tattoos with a charming grit, strumming hard through get-outta-this-town anthems like "Great Expectations," "The '59 Sound" and "Old White Lincoln."

The Knux, one of the few hip-hop acts on this year's bill, made sure their presence was known, hitting the stage to the strains of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and swaggering like a rebel rock band, complete with distorted guitars over sampled beats. Clad in matching black Knux T-shirts, they looked like a rap Ramones tribute. MC Krispy Kreme did his best to get the crowd hyped with shout-along choruses on "Remind Me In 3 Days" and the rousing "Cappuccino."

Cleveland's Kid Cudi fit surprisingly nicely on the Perry Stage after synthetically produced acts like Simian Mobile Disco and Crookers led the way, because he himself seems to live in a world that is half real and half synthesized. Like mentor Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, Cudi has found a sweet spot between hip-hop and electronically enhanced singing, even if it was sometimes hard to tell if he was actually singing live along to the tracks.

If that wasn't your scene, the men of Bon Iver were sure to mellow you down easy with the droney strains of "Lump Sum" and "Blood Bank" and perhaps the strangest mass festival sing along ever, the plaintive "Skinny Love," with its refrain of "Now I'm breaking at the britches/ And at the end of all your lines."

The schizophrenia continued back across the way, as the funky hippie techo of STS9 mutated into the spastic gothy beats of Crystal Castles and then the psychedelic mindstorm that is Of Montreal. What other band's lead singer is carried on stage by a pair of Skeletor-looking monsters for a set of short-attention-span pixie-pop that included masked ninjas battling a gigantic female sumo wrestler, transvestites in one-legged leotards releasing balloons and pajama-wearing goons in gasmasks delivering Christmas presents filled with smokebombs?

In addition to playing such fan favorites as "Nonpareil of Favor," "For Our Elegant Caste" and a beat-assisted version of "Wraith Pinned To the Mist," the kaleidoscopic set also featured a surprise appearance by urban boho songstress and friend Janelle Monae for a cover of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream."

The day's biggest crowd, however, belonged to Kings of Leon, who played the festival in 2007 and reminded the adoring crowd that their 2003 Lolla set was a disaster. After opening with the fiery three-punch combo of "Be Somebody," "Taper Jean Girl" and "My Party," singer Caleb Followil recalled how the then-new group played to just a handful of people back then, joking that when the meager crowds got a load of their mustaches and outfits, they quickly dispersed. That wasn't the case this time, though, as the now world-beating rock group funked up "Molly's Chambers" and "Crawl" with a grimy, Stonesy flair and created a chorus of tens of thousands on their breakthrough hit, "Sex on Fire."

It was hard to believe that jittery band Caleb spoke of was the same one whose soaring, radio-ready anthems were bouncing around the skyscraper canyons of downtown Chicago on Friday night, as if they belonged on the main stage all along.

Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan Undergoes Cancer Surgery

Band cancels and postpones tour dates after singer has cancerous tumor removed from his bladder.

Several weeks after Depeche Mode canceled a string of European dates because singer Dave Gahan was reportedly suffering a severe case of gastroenteritis, a spokesperson for the band announced on Thursday that Gahan had undergone surgery to remove a malignant tumor on his bladder.

"On May 12th, lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a severe bout of gastroenteritis, leading to his hospitalization and the cancellation of the [May 12] Athens concert," read the statement. "While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a low-grade malignant tumor in Dave's bladder, which has since been successfully removed. At doctors' orders, Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8th to ensure that he makes a full recovery."

While Gahan underwent surgery and recovered, the band was forced to cancel nine European shows, which may or may not be rescheduled. In addition, a May 30 show at the O2 Arena in London will be rescheduled, and appearances at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, Netherlands, has been canceled. Shows in Hamburg (June 2) and Dusseldorf, Germany (June 4, 5), as well as a July 2 show in Bergen, Norway, will be rescheduled. And while the June 7 show in Leipzig, Germany, is canceled, the June 8 show is expected to go on as scheduled.

"Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience," the statement continued. "Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused." Assuming Gahan, 47, is fully recovered, the long-running synth-pop group is expected to play out a full roster of June and July dates at European festivals, stadiums and amphitheaters.

Band cancels Athens, Greece, concert after frontman falls ill.

Depeche Mode lead singer Dave Gahan fell ill and was rushed to an Athens, Greece, hospital on Tuesday, forcing the band to cancel their gig at the last minute.

Although few details have emerged about his condition, French news agency AFP reports that Gahan, 47, was brought to a private clinic for treatment of "suspected gastroenteritis."

"We regret today's performance has to be canceled. ... David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room," a concert organizer told the Terra Vibe park audience of about 20,000, according to Reuters. The band could potentially make up for the missed show on Wednesday (May 13) if the singer's condition improves. There is no word on whether there will be any further cancellations.

The group is currently promoting their new album, Sounds of the Universe, on their Tour of the Universe. They have shows scheduled through February 2010, including a gig at Lollapalooza in Chicago in August.

Rolling Stone reports that when Depeche Mode performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last month, their performance drew more than 12,000 fans, which was the largest audience the show had ever seen since premiering in 2003.

Depeche Mode have found fame since the 1980s with hits including "Enjoy the Silence," "Policy of Truth" and "Personal Jesus," and they have sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. Gahan helped found the band in Basildon, Essex, England, in 1980.

Does anything go right for Britney Spears anymore? In the wake of Brit's recent hospital stay and 15-minute meeting with Dr. Phil, the troubled pop star was spotted Monday night on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard, having a bit of car trouble. Spears' car suffered a flat tire near the 405 freeway. According to a rep from the Los Angeles Police Department, the singer abandoned her Mercedes in the middle of the street and accepted a ride home from one of the many paparazzi who were following her. The LAPD had the car towed to a nearby lot for safekeeping. Spears will have to cover the $104 towing fee, as well as a $35.60 storage fee. ...

Lindsay Lohan is being sued by the woman she allegedly chased in July while driving under the influence, and now Tracie Rice is seeking more money from the actress. According to TMZ.com, Rice has filed legal papers that allege she has already spent $3,500 in therapist bills and other medical-related expenses. She also claims she lost her job because of the car chase. ...

John Legend, Robin Thicke, Lil Mama, Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia are some of the stars who will serenade Aretha Franklin when she is honored as the 2008 MusiCares Person of the year at an event at the Los Angeles Convention Center on February 8. The music legend is being hailed for her outreach efforts to children's and health-care groups, churches and food banks in the Detroit area. The event will also feature a silent auction with items by members of Led Zeppelin, Bill Clinton and others — proceeds go to MusiCares, which helps musicians in need of financial, medical and/or personal help. ...

Kanye West has been on fire lately with his blog, posting about everything from Dr. Dre's new line of headphones to a nostalgic look at Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity" video. ... Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, Fergie, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne and Lindsay Lohan have something dubious in common — they've all been named on Mr. Blackwell's annual worst-dressed list. Victoria Beckman topped the list. ... Ray J is teeing up a new album for release in April, and he has taken Lil Wayne, the Game and Snoop Dogg along for the ride. All I Feel also boasts production from Rodney Jerkins, and Yung Berg is featured on the album's first single, "Sexy Can I." ...

What's good for Radiohead is apparently good for Coldplay. According to various reports, including one from British newspaper the Daily Star, Coldplay may be mulling a departure from EMI, the band's longtime label home. Radiohead ditched the label and released their last album, In Rainbows, independently online. According to a source, Coldplay don't feel they "necessarily need a label" and will consider all of their options before re-signing with the company. The band has been working on its fourth LP with producer Brian Eno (U2, Depeche Mode), and had originally hoped to release the new material this spring, though no official release date has been given. ...

The South by Southwest lineup has swollen to include Bun B and the Black Keys. Blitzen Trapper, the Von Bondies, the Raveonettes and Vampire Weekend have also been announced to play at the festival, which will happen March 12-16 in Austin, Texas. Speaking of the Keys, their new album, Attack & Release — which was produced by Danger Mouse — will hit stores April 1. ... Sean Penn and the Coen brothers keep raking in the accolades — the respective "Into the Wild" and "No Country for Old Men" directors have been nominated for the Directors Guild of America's best filmmaker honor. Paul Thomas Anderson ("There Will Be Blood"), Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton") and Julian Schnabel ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") are also up for the distinction, and the winner will be announced January 26. ...

According to Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, singer Bif Naked, 36, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Naked, whose real name is Beth Torbert, reportedly found a lump in her breast during a self-examination. She is scheduled for a lumpectomy this week and will also undergo chemotherapy. "It's like being on 'The Price Is Right,' " she told the paper. "I can't believe coins didn't come out of the machine. They said, 'This is not something we're happy with. Let's do an ultrasound.' ... A week later ... they did these tests, and this biopsy came back basically being pretty gosh darn positive for breast cancer." Naked is not afraid to take on the chronic disease. "I'm really confident that it's going to be a snap for me," she said. "I have a pre-existing aneurysm in my heart, so it will be a challenge medically. Hopefully in three weeks I can start my chemotherapy. ... After that, you can go through the steps of radiation, and hopefully be right as right." ...

According to guitarist Brian Bell, Weezer's forthcoming sixth album is in the bag. "Personally, I think it's our best yet," he said in a statement. "Never have the four of us worked so hard and passionately on an album, and we all look forward to performing this culmination of our talents and combined knowledge in 2008 in a city near you." ... French electronic sensations Justice will anchor the bill for the forthcoming MySpace Music Tour, which is set to kick off March 3 in Austin, Texas, and run through March 31 in Los Angeles. Diplo, DJ Mehdi, Chromeo, Busy P and Fancy are also scheduled to perform. ... Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett has an autobiography on the way. His tome, "Things the Grandchildren Should Know," examines the singer's life and his early days in rock music. The book will be available in the States in the fall. ...

There's a new Web site that's designed to help pair drummers with bands that are short on talent. Over at DrummerHunter.com, bands that need a kitman can browse potential players using a profile system similar to those used on dating Web sites or social networks like MySpace. Drummers can post contact information, MP3s of their playing, acts they like and genres they can play, all for free. Bands can then search the profiles and contact the sticksmen directly.

Shins multi-instrumentalist Marty Crandall was reportedly arrested Friday night on a domestic-violence charge after an altercation with girlfriend and former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Elyse Sewell. In a LiveJournal.com post titled "Worst Weekend Olympics" that has since been locked, Sewell, who dated Crandall for several years, wrote that a night of drinking in a Sacramento, California, hotel room ended with her escaping "from the room through a blitzkrieg of violence." According to several reports, the post featured photos of Sewell's heavily bruised arms and bloody knuckles, and noted that Crandall bore bite marks from their alleged scuffle, which resulted in Sewell's arrest as well. Both were reportedly booked after she notified hotel security about the incident — Sewell was reportedly released from jail Saturday, while a search of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Web site shows that a man named Martin Lesley Crandall was released from jail Sunday. A spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department could not be reached for comment at press time. In a Sunday afternoon post, Sewell wrote on her LiveJournal.com page that, "I'm feeling much better on this new day (after sleeping until noon). I've decided to heed the advice of many commenters (lawyerly types) and friends — lock my last entry about the legal foibles between me and my ex-boyfriend." The Shins' label Sub Pop responded to the matter on Monday (January 7), saying in a statement, "Marty Crandall and his ex-girlfriend Elyse Sewell were both arrested over the weekend following an argument at a Sacramento hotel which resulted in hotel staff calling the police. They were both taken into police custody and released over the weekend. There will be no further comment at this time, and [we] would appreciate their privacy being respected." Crandall and Sewell are due back in court Tuesday. ...

Jay-Z, Bono, Al Gore, George Clooney, Jon Stewart and Matthew McConaughey were just a few of the celebrities who appeared in a video poking fun at Microsoft founder Bill Gates on his last day and subsequent retirement. The clip aired Sunday as a part of Gates' last keynote address to his company. In the video, Gates — with newfound time on his hands — explores several alternative post-career options. First he's in the studio cutting a record with Jay at the boards. "You killed it, Billy G," Jay says in the clip. Then Bono gets a phone call that brings him offstage during a concert — on the other end, Gates shares his new high score at "Guitar Hero." The near-eight-minute video ends with the iconic software advocate receiving a cheering ovation. ... Curiously, the Gates keynote event wasn't the only place where Jay and Bono crossed paths recently — the exiting Def Jam prez checked out a screening of U2's new 3-D concert film on Monday (January 7), according to RollingStone.com. Kanye Admits To Having Had A 'Sippy Sippy' (Or Two) Before EMA Rant

Maybe he was possessed by the spirit of late Wu-Tang rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. That's one explanation for why Kanye West crashed the stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark, Thursday night and launched into a profanity-laced tirade after losing out on the Best Video award. After the show, however, a somewhat loose-looking Kanye gave a very different reason for his bum rush: He told MTV UK correspondent Tim Kash it was due to drinking before the show.
"I had a little sippy sippy," he said. He added that, after the show, he planned to do "a little more sippy sippy."
At the awards ceremony, West, who won the Best Hip-Hop artist trophy, was not content to sit idly by as Justice vs. Simian's arty "We Are Your Friends" took home top honors over his own big-budget "Touch the Sky."

Unlike the Simian video — which features images of people falling through floors, lying passed out as a forest of beer bottles is set up around them and milk and cereal are poured on them — Kanye argued during his bum-rushing rant that his high-concept clip should have won because, "[My video] cost a million dollars. Pamela Anderson was in it. I was jumping across canyons and sh--." If his Evel Knievel-honoring effort doesn't win, Kanye argued, "the awards show loses credibility. Nothing against you, but hell, man."
This isn't Kanye's first awards-show tirade. In December, he spouted to MTV News about the Grammy Awards, saying, "If I don't win Album of the Year, I'm gonna really have a problem with that" (see "Kanye's At It Again: 'If I Don't Win Album Of The Year I'm Gonna Have A Problem' "). He also previously attacked the American Music Awards backstage at the event after losing Best New Artist to Gretchen Wilson.
Kanye's latest rant, which drew gasps from the audience, continued at a press conference after the show, according to reports from MTV UK. West told the media he was upset because he had the best video, admitting, "I haven't seen [the Justice vs. Simian video]. Possibly it could have been quite good, but no way better than 'Touch the Sky.' That is complete bullsh--. I paid a million. Obviously it's not all about the money, but the response it got transcended everything, it really made great TV. It took a month to film; I stood on a mountain; I flew a helicopter over Vegas. I did it to be the king of all videos and I wanted to walk home with that award."
He chalked up the Justice vs. Simian win to some "spread the love bullsh--, 'Oh everyone should have an award'. Please, press people, print 'Kanye says f--- that!"
Speaking to Kash afterward, in classic Kanye fashion, rather than apologizing for raining on Simian's parade, West said he hoped his intrusion would not be edited down or chopped up, but played in its entirety. "I just went up there and I talked my sh-- onstage," he said. "Just as long as they don't edit my part, I'll be good."
West had kinder words for host Justin Timberlake, who beat him out in the Best Male category. "Obviously Justin should have won," a momentarily humbled West said. "He's on fire and he's an inspiration to me."
Alas, Kanye had to settle for one award, while Timberlake took home two, including a nod for Best Pop artist. Other winners included the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Best Album), the Killers (Best Rock), Christina Aguilera (Best Female), Muse (Best Alternative act), Depeche Mode (Best Group) and Rihanna (Best R&B). Gnarls Barkley won Best Song for their ubiquitous hit "Crazy" as well as the Futuresounds award, a best new artist nod voted on by musical peers. The show also featured performances by Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, the Killers, Snoop Dogg, Keane, Muse and Finland's finest, Lordi.
Perhaps as a sign of her enduring cultural influence, Madonna was the butt of two comedy bits during the show, with British comedian Avid Merrion spoofing her performance of "Hung Up" at last year's awards and Borat taking another poke at his creator Sacha Baron Cohen's former dinner companion with the line, "My only concern is that the singing transvestite will not a be good father."

'Tis the Season: Cam'ron fans have been waiting to hear Killa deliver on the Jay-Z disses he not-so-subtly previewed earlier this year with a press conference and video spoof for the songs "Lick It or Not" and "Wet Wipes." Cam milks the press conference for all its worth, including it on a DVD accompanying the limited-edition run of Killa Season. That version also has behind-the-scenes footage of Cam's recent movie of the same name, plus two bonus songs.
Rac-A-Fellas: Pick up your copy of the Raconteurs' Broken Boy Soldiers debut in Japan and you'll find a bonus song, "The Bane Rendition." If you're searching for Jack White's other band in Australia, you'll have to look under "S" instead, since the group has to go by the name the Saboteurs down there for copyright reasons. But if you're in the States, you'll find the record in its 10-track splendor. Songs include "Steady, As She Goes," "Store Bought Bones" and "Intimate Secretary."
Milian Dollar Baby: If you were ahead of the ball, you might have requested a copy of Christina Milian's So Amazin' over iTunes, netting you two bonus songs and a couple of unreleased mixes of the first single, "Say I." But that's OK if you didn't, since all versions of the Cool & Dre-produced record are enhanced with the "Say I" video. And the singer adds a little hustle to her flow on "Who's Gonna Ride," featuring Three Six Mafia.
Stankonia: The third whiff from Hoobastank has a seven-minute songs with flutes ("More Than a Memory") and a vocal contribution from an actual barking sergeant. But if that's not enough reason to pick up Every Man for Himself, a limited-edition version comes with a bonus tee (no, it's not scratch and sniff), and both editions are enhanced with some video treats.
Lean on Them: Hip-hop artists seek help from big-name producers on virtually every record, but this week sees a bunch of rock acts canoodling with members of other bands. Rookies Rock Kills Kid cozy up with ex-Drive Like Jehu member Mark Trombino for their major-label blast-off, Are You Nervous? (should they really be the ones asking that question?). Five albums in, Mason Jennings looks for a shot of adrenaline from Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, whose Glacial Pace imprint is putting out the Minneapolis singer/songwriter's LP (which unlocks additional content on MasonJennings.com). And another singer/songwriter, Marykate O'Neil, enlisted Jill Sobule to co-write and perform on much of her new one, 1-800-Bankrupt.
Cure keyboardist Roger O'Donnell, whose The Truth in Me was made entirely on a Moog, beckoned Postal Service member Jimmy Tamborello and Notwist keyboardist Martin Gretschmann to remix two tracks from the record. O'Donnell's second record also christens his new label, 99 X Out of Ten. Run Run Run — a band that cites the Cure as a big influence — hook up with Bauhaus' David J for their debut LP, Endless Winter. Age Discrimination: None of the Finals are more than 25 years old, which should give their John Naclerio (My Chemical Romance, Brand New)-produced debut, Plan Your Getaway, an even younger appeal. Instrumentalist Mike Oldfield sold more than 16 million copies of his Tubular Bells record when he was still in his teens, and his performances from eight years later are captured on the DVD "Live at Montreux 1981." And singer/songwriter/super-producer T Bone Burnett — who hasn't released a solo LP in 14 years — is making up for lost time by simultaneously releasing the new DualDisc The True False Identity and the compilation Twenty Twenty: The Essential T Bone Burnett.

Ashley Parker Angel's Soundtrack to Your Life vs. Radioinactive's Soundtrack to a Book: Where's Soundtrack of Our Lives when we need them? Surely they'd break the stalemate between this week's two soundtracks that technically aren't. The former O-Town singer's "There and Back" TV show has led him to happiness, as he plainly states on "I'm Better," "Feel So Alive" and "Perfect Now." Radioinactive, a member of avant-garde hip-hoppers the Shapeshifters, is anything but simple on his Book, for which he culled a synthesizer built in 1975, a robot from '78 and a recording made by a cult leader in '82. Radio's charming cover photo — it's a shot of him as a kid, playing with a droid — gives him even more of an advantage.
Depeche Mode's reissues vs. Dinosaur Jr.'s reissues: While they weren't exactly from the same era — DM got off to an earlier start in 1980 — both bands peaked artistically in the late '80s and reveled in the doom and gloom throughout. Now their best works are being remastered for all you fancy-pants fans: DM's Speak & Spell, Music for the Masses and Violator are being dished out again, this time with a bonus DVD of 5.1 and enhanced-stereo mixes, DVD-only B-sides and remixes, a short film about the making of the record and deluxe packaging with lyrics and hard-to-find pics. Dinosaur Jr.'s notable Green Mind and Where You Been have three bonus tracks apiece, but alas, no extra disc. Also due this week is frontman J Mascis' self-explanatory Live at CBGB's: The First Acoustic Show, an unreleased LP limited to just 5,000 copies and available only at the Coalition of Independent Music Stores. The 1993 gig — at which Mascis played a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Every Mother's Son" — clinches him the brass ring.
The Wedding Present's Search for Paradise: Three songs from last year's Take Fountain, plus a heap of remixes and B-sides, constitute the U.K. band's second release since reuniting in 2004. Tacked onto the set is a DVD containing a film that accompanies a live acoustic version of "Perfect Blue," behind-the-scenes stuff and clips for "Interstate 5," "I'm From Further North Than You," "Ringway to Seatac" and "Don't Touch That Dial."
The Twilight Singers's Powder Burns: No less than Ani DiFranco and Joseph Arthur helped Greg Dulli and his Twilight Singers with their fourth effort, Powder Burns, which they partially documented in New Orleans with Neville Brothers (and Joseph Arthur) collaborator Mike Napolitano. That location alone brings extra weight to songs like "Toward the Waves" and "Underneath the Waves."

Madonna, Kanye Just Add To Coachella's Eclectic Atmosphere

Commercial acts join headliners Tool, Depeche Mode and newcomers Gnarls Barkley, Wolfmother in desert.

INDIO, California — Approximately 100 hours of music was performed at Coachella over the weekend (12 hours times five stages times two days minus set changes), yet the desert festival's 2006 edition will likely be remembered for two 30-minute flashes.

That's because, whether it's technically accurate to say so or not, this was the year Coachella went commercial, with pop superstars Kanye West and Madonna invited to the hipster kids' party. (Dozens of commercially successful bands, from Rage Against the Machine in 1999 to Coldplay in 2005, have played Coachella, but this was different, hence the "Madonna Killed Coachella" T-shirts seen around.)
And with Kanye and Madonna came a beautiful oddness tailor-made for a festival that prides itself on eclecticism. (Icelandic weirdos Sigur Rós followed Kanye, for example, while metal weirdos Coheed & Cambria started seconds after Madonna finished in the next tent over.) Unfortunately, it also brought along a few elements typical of a commercial concert: Both were about 20 minutes late, a Coachella rarity, and both were also rather sassy, although it played out well during their respective shows.
Kanye, seemingly frustrated by his late start, picked up his set list and crossed off songs, although it might have been his best move as he left nothing but hit singles, from "Touch the Sky" to "Jesus Walks." In introducing "Gold Digger," he boasted, "The Grammys got it wrong: This was the Song of the Year."
And later in the song, the rapper, sporting a Miles Davis T-shirt, encouraged a sing-along by joking, "White people, this is your only chance to say n---a, so you better take advantage of it."
While Kanye hit the main stage on Saturday, Madonna took the Sahara tent, so the question going into her highly anticipated 8 p.m. show (by far the biggest crowd the "dance" tent has ever seen) was whether it would be a hits set or something for the ravers.
Madonna went the latter route, opening with the same performance of "Hung Up" she did at the Grammys (giant disco ball and all), followed by two more tracks from 2005's Confessions on a Dance Floor: "Get Together" and "I Love New York." Perhaps it was the song choices or the volume, which seemed about half as loud as Paul Oakenfold's set just before, but the crowd started dispersing early, even though no act was on the main stage.
Maybe Madonna noticed or maybe she was just being herself, but the sass came out in comments like, "Do not throw water on my stage, mother------s" and "Does my ass look nice?"
Madonna, who danced seductively, played guitar on a few tracks and added the line "Just go to Texas and suck George Bush's d---" into "I Love New York," got some energy going with "Ray of Light," and earned her loudest cheers of the night when she asked: "Do you want to hear an old song?" (After which she asked, "Should I take my pants off?" and proceeded to do so.) The feather boa she donned indicated it might be "Material Girl," but she instead went with her very first single, "Everybody."
As the track came to an end, a curtain closed on Madonna and her dancers, leaving the crowd collectively wondering, "Is that it?"

It was, for Madonna at least. So it's a good thing there was another 99 hours of music. And here are a few highlights:
Kanye and Madonna were all the talk, but the festival's headliners were actually Depeche Mode and Tool, and both seemingly left their massive audiences thrilled. Depeche front-ended their set with newer, slower material, but those who stuck around were treated to hits like "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence." Tool, on the other hand, came out fighting with "Stinkfist" (and frontman Maynard Keenan saying, "Hello, hippies") and plowed through their best-known material, with a few new tracks included. Unlike past years, where some headliners have struggled with filling the giant venue sonically, both Depeche and Tool were near pitch-perfect.
Several acts came out of lengthy hiatuses for Coachella (Tool, Massive Attack, etc.), but the most welcomed back were Daft Punk, who played for a near-Madonna-size crowd at the Sahara tent to close out Saturday. Dressed as robots and perched in a booth high above the stage, the DJs spun an electrifying techno mix (with frequent snippets of their smash "Around the World") that made it almost impossible not to dance.
Every Coachella features a breakthrough afternoon tent performance (last year it was Bloc Party, who graduated to the Outdoor Theater this year) and the new breakout was clearly Wolfmother. The Australian vintage rockers ripped through their Led Zeppelin-esque tracks with fervor while afroed frontman Andrew Stockdale worked the crowd with his rock poses.
With the temperature soaring near triple digits on Sunday afternoon, Matisyahu took the main stage and delivered a spiritual, reggae-fied show fit for the occasion. "It's divine intervention that I'm here in the desert today," the Hasidic rapper said. "This is the time in the Jewish calendar when the Jews traveled the desert for 49 days." Matis also rocked the mic with some serious beatboxing and achieved the Coachella sing-along moment when he closed with "King Without a Crown" (sorry, Kanye), which recalled a similar vibe to Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley singing his dad's "Exodus" and "Could You Be Loved" the night before.
If you don't count their secret club show Friday in Los Angeles, Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse debuted their Gnarls Barkley project Sunday, despite what the former said from the stage. "Gnarls Barkley couldn't be here, so we're going to play their songs," he joked. "We're called Mean Old Lion and the Hearts." The joke was a reference to their stage attire, which was inspired by "The Wizard of Oz" with the band as witches, singers as Dorothy and Scarecrow, and Cee-Lo as the Lion. Gnarls could have come out dressed as James Blunt, though, as it was their funked-out soul tunes that turned the crowd, well, "Crazy."
A few special guests hit Coachella stages, from Cocteau Twins singer Liz Fraser joining Massive Attack on "Teardrop" to No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont joining laid-back rocker Matt Costa, to some girl in the crowd grinding with Common. The weirder, slightly familiar faces were in the audience, though, including Josh Groban, "American Idol" finalist Lisa Tucker, "Project Runway" finalist Santino Rice, Danny DeVito (enjoying Daft Punk), Nicky Hilton, Nicole Richie and Linkin Park's Brad Delson.
Once again, the U.K. served Coachella a smorgasbord of sweet stuff, including the unique grime sounds of firecracker Lady Sovereign, the sexy saxophone rock of the Zutons, the dance-rock perfection of Franz Ferdinand and the feel-good jingles of the Go! Team. Non-exported highlights included New York's Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Stellastarr*, Montreal's Wolf Parade and Kentucky's My Morning Jacket.
Despite the mid-afternoon heat, mainstage standouts the Walkmen still donned their trademark suits, with singer Hamilton Leithauser in a khaki getup. "It was either this or black corduroy," he said backstage. "This is all I packed."

Federal Transportation Safety Administration officials are investigating a breach of security at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport on Thursday involving Paula Abdul and a companion, according to The Associated Press. Southwest Airlines was alerted to the breach while the "American Idol" judge's 12:20 p.m. flight was in the air and then screened all passengers and baggage once the plane landed in Burbank, California. A McCarran spokesperson told the AP that someone not employed by Southwest Airlines, the TSA or the Department of Aviation, led Abdul past the mandatory checkpoint. ...
Four "American Idol" hopefuls were sent packing Thursday night, narrowing the field for the show's fifth season to 16. Brenna Gethers, Heather Cox, David Radford and Jose "Sway" Penala scored the fewest votes in the second round of "Idol" eliminations determined by the viewers. Host Ryan Seacrest revealed that more than 42 million votes were cast this week. ...Tool have titled their upcoming album 10,000 Days, according to the band's spokesperson. Matisyahu will descend upon Tower Records in Northridge, California, for a live performance two days after the release of his new album. Youth hits stores March 7, and customers who purchase the Hasidic rapper's disc at Tower in Northridge will receive a wristband for the gig and signing two days later. The show will be staged in the Tower Records parking lot, and the first few hundred people who buy Youth beforehand will be able to stand in front of the stage. ... Thursday night, fresh off their European tour, Detroit's Slum Village gave an intimate performance at Club Twenty Twenty in Santa Monica, California. Former Jackson 5 drummer Johnny Jackson was found dead at his home in Gary, Indiana, on Wednesday night, according to The Associated Press. The 54-year-old was found stabbed in the chest not long after a neighbor complained of a disturbance between Jackson and a woman on the first floor of his complex. The unidentified woman has yet to come forward, and no murder weapon was found at the scene. Police are currently treating the case as a homicide and an investigation is still taking place, according to the AP. Johnny Jackson, who grew up near the Jackson family home, joined the superstar pop group — which included a young Michael Jackson — in 1967, replacing original drummer Milford Hite. Reports have varied over the years as to whether or not Johnny was directly related to the Jackson clan. ...
When is a band sticker on a bicycle more than it seems? When police think it's an act of terrorism. Officials at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, shut down four buildings and called out the bomb squad on Thursday when they spotted a bike with sticker that said "this bike is a pipe bomb." According to the AP, it turns out the sticker was a promo for a punk band of the same name, but police didn't find that out until they blocked off streets for blocks around the Oasis restaurant near campus and called in the bomb squad from 65 miles away. The bomb experts hit the bike with a high-pressure hose and tore it apart with a Jaws of Life device before finding out that it was the name of a Pensacola, Florida, band on Plan-It-X Records. The bike's owner was interviewed by cops and released without charge. ... The U.S. Justice Department said Thursday that it had opened an investigation into alleged price-fixing in the sale of digital downloads, according to the AP. The inquiry is almost identical to the one launched in December by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, according to two music industry executives. The Justice Department would not name the companies it has targeted. ...
Ted Nugent, Anthrax's Scott Ian, Sebastian Bach, Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld and Jason Bonham, the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, will be the stars of VH1's forthcoming series "SuperGroup." Set to start airing May 18, the program will team these five rockers up, presenting them with a chance to form the "heaviest 'SuperGroup.' " The audience will watch as either history — or just mistakes — are made. The series follows the rockers over a two-week period in Las Vegas; rock manager Doc McGhee will guide the guys through the process. The entire experiment will culminate with a massive concert in Sin City. ... Lamb of God will hit a Richmond, Virginia, recording studio on March 13 to begin pre-production on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's Ashes of the Wake. The video for "Rosenrot" promises to be disturbing, involving burning at the stake and authentic scourging and flagellation, sans stuntmen (not surprisingly, it's already been banned from daytime play in Germany). ... Alkaline Trio will kick off their Occult Roots of Alkaline Trio: Early Songs for Eerie People Tour on March 30 in Sparks, Nevada. The band's set list for the trek will include material from the Trio's entire catalog, with some tracks being performed acoustically. Dates run through April 15 in Sayreville, New Jersey. Against Me! have been tapped as the tour openers. ... Massive Attack's Collected, due April 4, will feature some previously unreleased material alongside the pioneering electronic-music group's best tunes. A greatest-hits DVD will also be included, with Jonathan Glazer's just-completed clip for new single "Live With Me" as a bonus.

Could it be three albums in less than two years for Beck? He released both Guero and Guerolito in 2005 and is now finishing up yet another album, according to a spokesperson for him. The album was recorded in a week with Nigel Godrich before Guero, and is said to be the bridge between that album and Sea Change. There's no official release date for the currently untitled record. Meanwhile Beck continues to use his Web site to showcase new songs. Most recently he posted two covers from Nick Drake's Pink Moon: "Which Will" and "Parasite." ...
Common will be among the recipients of the Chicago chapter of the Recording Academy Honors Award, celebrating those who have "improved the environment for the creative community." Chaka Khan, Les Paul and the late Lou Rawls will also be honored at the gala, to be held March 23 at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower. ... On Friday Saved Latin will perform at the Knitting Factory in New York. Why is this news? Well, because Saved are actually Fall Out Boy's super-secret pseudonym. The double-platinum pop-punkers had been promising a spate of secret shows for months now, and the Friday gig at the tiny Knitting Factory is the first. Tickets are long-gone (sorry) and fetching upward of 60 bucks a pop on various online bidding sites. As far as the name? Well, a spokesperson for the band's label, Island Records, claims it's taken from the film "Rushmore" (at one point, Jason Schwartzman's Max Fischer declares "I saved Latin, what did you ever do?"). ... Ciara's working on her second album, and according to producer Rodney Jerkins, she's trying some new things. "I told her, 'Let's push the envelope the way Janet Jackson did back in the day,' and she wasn't afraid to try," he said. ... Joe Simpson has big things planned in 2006 for his new Papa Joe Records. "We've got Barefoot, that's our first one," he said recently. "We've got a girl named Valeria, who's a beautiful Latina girl. Garage rockers are starting a war — or at least a war of words. Underground garage rocker Billy Childish — who has released more than 50 records in his various bands (Pop Rivets, the Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats) — has called out the White Stripes in the latest issue of GQ magazine, saying of the Detroit duo: "I can't listen to that stuff. They don't have a good sound. ... Jack's half into the sound and music, but then he wants to be a pop star as well, so you've got a big problem." Jack White shot back on the band's Web site: "As for Billy Childish, Meg and I really feel sorry for you. It must be lonely sitting in all of that garage-rock bitterness, Billy." ... Pearl Jam have set a May 2 release date for their eighth studio album and first in four years. The self-titled release, produced by Adam Kasper, will be their first on J Records. The first single, "World Wide Suicide," will be made available as a free, unrestricted download on PearlJam.com for two days beginning March 8. ... While Scott Weiland has said he wants to make a concept album for Velvet Revolver's second release, bassist Duff McKagan was hesitant to confirm it. Artists scheduled to perform at the annual festival include Depeche Mode, Common and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

As in years past, the lineup for this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival features an eclectic mix of artists. Depeche Mode and Tool will serve as Coachella's co-headliners, and more than 80 acts will hit the stage during the 2006 installment of the two-day rock jubilee, which is set to take over Empire Polo Field in the small desert town of Indio, California on April 29 and 30. Tickets for the festival go on sale Saturday at noon (PST).
Depeche Mode, who will close the first night on the main stage, were officially named one of Coachella's headlining acts late last week. But back in December, frontman David Gahan let it slip backstage at KROQ-FM's Almost Acoustic Christmas that the band would be co-headlining the concert (see "Depeche Mode To Co-Headline 2006 Coachella Festival"). The act's presence on the roster preserves Coachella's ritual of booking 1980s icons and pioneers. The Cure, New Order, Bauhaus, Beastie Boys, Kraftwerk, Gang of Four, and a reunited Pixies have appeared on the bill in recent years.
Franz Ferdinand, Daft Punk, Sigur Rós, Common and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley will also top the first evening's bill. Others scheduled to perform that day include the Eagles of Death Metal, My Morning Jacket, Atmosphere, Carl Cox, Cat Power, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Ladytron, Tosca, Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, She Wants Revenge, Lady Sovereign, Deerhoof, Editors, the Zutons, Colette, Imogen Heap, Wolf Mother, Living Things and You Hear It First artists Hard-Fi and the Like.
Tool's headlining set is scheduled to cap off the weekend as the finale to Sunday night's show. The band, which rocked the crowd during the inaugural Coachella back in 1999, has not performed live in the United States since 2002, when it toured with Mike Patton's Tomahawk. At present, the Maynard James Keenan-fronted group is mixing its forthcoming album — Tool's first since 2001's Lateralus. Photos taken during the recording of the LP, which were posted on guitarist Adam Jones' online blog, showed that Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, Melvins guitarist King Buzzo and Isis frontman Aaron Turner had stopped into the studio during the sessions. It's not yet known whether the guests will appear on the album, which will arrive in stores in late April or early May.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, DJ Paul Oakenfold and Scissor Sisters will warm up the Coachella crowd for Keenan's band. Others taking the stage on April 30 include Hasidic dancehall rapper Matisyahu, James Blunt, Sleater-Kinney, TV on the Radio, Mogwai, Coheed and Cambria, Gnarls Barkley (featuring Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo), Coldcut, Digable Planets, Little Louie Vega, Wolf Parade, the Go! Team, the Dears, the Magic Numbers, the Subways, and Minus the Bear.
Additional bands set to play the two-day festival will be announced Tuesday night (January 31).
For the past few weeks, Coachella's bill was rumored to include a Smashing Pumpkins reunion (see "Billy Corgan Says He Wants To Re-Form Smashing Pumpkins"). But a spokesperson for frontman Billy Corgan's record label shot that speculation down during a recent interview with a California radio station. Melissa Auf Der Maur, formerly of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, scoffed at the supposed Coachella booking during a recent interview with MTV News.
"I think [that would be] a little too soon," said Auf Der Maur, who worked with Corgan several months ago on a track that will appear on her forthcoming, as-yet-untitled sophomore solo disc. "I think that it's cool that there's interest and rumors running around, but ... that's definitely a hoax."
