Rappers Paul Wall (born Paul Michael Slayton) and Baby Bash (Ronald Ray Bryant) were arrested in El Paso, Texas, early Sunday morning on suspicion of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana. The pair, who were in town to perform at the Summer Jamm 2011 show on Saturday, were released on Sunday afternoon after each posted a $300 bond, according to the El Paso Times.

Wall announced the arrest on his Twitter account, writing, "fresh out the El Paso County jail wit @Babybash @Biggroy, in the same tank they held Willie Nelson/Johnny Cash," accompanied by a photo of him in the back of a police car with Bash, who is in handcuffs.

The arrest occurred in what was described in press accounts as a "drug-free" zone, a detail that was explained in a subsequent Facebook post from Bash. While Wall, 30, seemed to have a good sense of humor about the incident, Bash, 41, was a bit more heated in his Twitter response. "Ain't 2much worse than a " HOE ASS PUNK EL PASO COP that abuses his authority, just cuz me and Paul Wall are artists! Only GEEKS and fools who don't have any spine abuses Authority! But I'm back in the FLESH feelin' so FRESH, out the tank mang!"

He quickly clarified, though, that he was not lashing out at cops over the arrest. "I'm not here to diss ALL police, they have a tuff gig and I respect that! BUT u have the ONE or TWO that will disrespect & abuse the power cuz maybe they got picked on in high school a lot and now have a chip on their shoulder, and that's exactly wut happened to us, all we did was SMELL like weed and wen he couldn't find it and we didn't snitch on who sparked it, he got overdramatic and took us in! He found out who we were and really got big shot on us! Haha even his partner said he's a di--."

Bash continued, claiming that bail was low because the judge "knew it was a bogus call." He said the pals admitted in court that they had smoked earlier, which is why they "smelled like tree," but that they didn't have any marijuana on them at the time of the arrest. "That made him [the officer] mad cuz he thought RAPPER must have large amount!"

A spokesperson for the El Paso Police Department was not available for comment at press time.

Britney Spears' new single, "Gimme More," premiered Thursday night (August 30) on Z100 and subsequently surfaced on the New York radio station's Web site. She opens the song by singing, "It's Britney, b---h," and producer Danjahandz closes it by saying, "Bet you didn't see this coming." In related news, "Access Hollywood" reports that a source told the news site that Spears' manager Larry Rudolph — who had been in hiding — has finally been subpoenaed in the singer's child-custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline. ...

Eve and 50 Cent are featured on the double-cover of Rap-Up's September/October issue, and both rappers do plenty of talking inside. For her part, Eve talked about her DUI arrest, fellow female rappers and her plans to start a family. While she didn't comment directly on the case, she did confirm that Sean Penn visited her while she was in jail but said he did not bail her out. Eve lashed out at Don Imus — "he's old enough to know better" — but only had good things to say about Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill — and Dr. Dre. "Me and Dre will always forever be cool. There's a respect, musically. ... We get in [the studio] and it's like shadowboxing." The magazine hits stands Tuesday. Eve talked more directly about her troubles with the law when People caught up with her Tuesday night at a nightclub in Las Vegas. She said she can't get used to the alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet she is being forced to wear. "When they told me I was getting it on, I thought it was going to be like a beeper, but it's like a pair of Bose headphones," she told the mag. She will be allowed to remove the bracelet on September 8. ...

Also featured in Rap-Up is 50 dishing about a handful of female artists. He said Beyoncé is "definitely hot" and called Ciara "talented" but dumped on rumored love interest Mya ("I don't think she's ever gonna be a success"). Fiddy also reiterated that he doesn't beef with Jay-Z and Diddy; riffed on his September 11 competitor, Kanye West; and also shared his feelings on the president. "Me and George Bush were both actually born on July 6, he's just a little older than me. And he does have a talent: He has less compassion than a regular human being." He added, "Me and George Bush are so different. ... I actually go to war, when I go to war. Bush just sends [people] to war. When I took a trip to Iraq — 'cause I went to perform for the soldiers in Iraq — they had the same vehicles that I ride around in New York." While he's not crazy about President Bush, 50 did reveal who he would like to be the successor: "I'd like to see Hillary Clinton be president. It would be nice to see a woman be the actual president and ... this is a way for us to have Bill Clinton be president again, and he did a great job during his term." ...

According to "Access Hollywood," an attorney for Owen Wilson told the TV show that the actor didn't overdose on drugs but rather slit his wrists during his failed suicide attempt on Sunday. The lawyer, who is not named, said Wilson had been taking antidepressants and was not aware of any other drugs in his system at the time of the incident. ...

Snoop Dogg will host this year's MTV Europe Music Awards, to be held in Munich, Germany, on November 1. "I've called up the homeys from east to west and I guarantee it's gonna be off tha chain, ya dig," Snoop told MTV U.K. Foo Fighters and British pop singer Mika are set to perform at the ceremony, which will have a new category this year: New Sounds of Europe. ... Miami's Bang! Music Festival is getting a big dose of Chicago music. Kanye West and Smashing Pumpkins will headline the extravaganza, which has ballooned to two days this year. The Bravery, Riverboat Gamblers and others are also confirmed for the fest, to be held at Miami's Bayfront Park Amphitheater. ... T-Pain is adding a twist to Baby Bash's Cyclone by appearing on the new Lil Jon-produced single of the same name. The Latino rapper also rubs elbows with producer J.R. Hulk Hogan's son Nick Bollea has posted on his MySpace page a message to fans regarding the Sunday night car accident that left 22-year-old passenger John Graziano critically injured. "I want to thank everyone who has sent their support to me. Right now I would like to ask all of you to focus your prayers on my friend John," reads the post. His sister Brooke expressed similar sentiments in a post on her own MySpace page: "You have all been so sweet to reach out to me and my family during this time. As you guys may know, Nicky has been released from the hospital, but my best friend John is still in the hospital. Ethereal Icelandic rockers Sigur Rós have pieced together a pair of releases for November 6. Hvarf/Heim is a double-CD: Hvarf encompasses five new recordings of songs — some previously unreleased — from various junctures in the band's career. Heim features six live acoustic versions of songs from Sigur Rós' four albums. A DVD is also on the way — "Heima" follows the group as it performed a series of free concerts in its native Iceland last summer. ...

Bob Marley's family intends to sue Universal Music Group and Verizon Wireless over a recently announced deal in which the companies said they plan to use some of the reggae legend's songs for products including ringtones, Billboard.com reports. Fifty Six Hope Road Music Limited, the company owned by Marley's family, told the news outlet that the companies' agreement was signed without the family's permission and doesn't mesh with Marley's Universal contract. A statement sent in response by Universal said the label hadn't received a suit and claimed, "We are offering Bob Marley ringtones through Verizon in accordance with the terms of a long standing contract between Bob Marley and UMG." ...

El DeBarge — a member of R&B squad DeBarge — was arrested Sunday for investigation of domestic violence, AP reports. The singer (real name: Eldra DeBarge) is being held without bail at a jail in Los Angeles because he has two previous warrants for his arrest in narcotics cases. ... The driver involved in the car crash that killed "A Christmas Story" director Bob Clark and his son has pleaded no contest to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, AP reports. Hector Velazquez-Nava will be sentenced September 27 and faces up to six years in prison.

Say what you will about those supposed Britney Spears tracks floating around online, but the singer is planning to debut the first single from her new album as early as this weekend. The single is called "Gimmie More," was produced by Danjahandz and is an up-tempo dance track — and is also the song for which the singer was seen shooting a video last month. "It's about feeling good, celebrating womanhood," Danja told MTV News earlier this year. "And if you don't dance to it, I really don't know what you're listening to. It's a new Britney." In related news, Spears will host the grand opening of Las Vegas nightclub LAX at the Luxor on Friday. DJ AM — who, along with Christina Aguilera, is an investor in the club — will man the decks. And the infamous Versace gown Spears was supposed to wear during her aborted OK! magazine shoot went up for auction on eBay on Wednesday (August 29). USA Today reported that bidding on the dress started at $5,700, with proceeds going to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. ...

Amy Winehouse can add the VMAs to the growing list of shows she won't be playing this year. The U.K. starlet — who last week postponed her U.S. tour until 2008 — has canceled her scheduled performance at the awards show on September 9. ... Lindsay Lohan plans to meet with her estranged father, Michael, while she is in rehab, a source told People.com, according to the site. People.com says multiple sources have revealed that Lohan's lawyer Blair Berk is helping negotiate Michael Lohan's visit to the Cirque Lodge in Sundance, Utah. ...

Christina Aguilera is on for the Emmy Awards. The singer will perform the Tony Bennett standard "Steppin' Out (With My Baby)" with the jazz legend at the ceremony, which will air September 16 on Fox. Ne-Yo, Baby Bash Join 'Idol' Dropout Mario Vazquez On Debut

He expects album to be wrapped up by end of March, released mid-summer.

As "American Idol" mania captures the country for the fifth consecutive year, the only finalist to ever quit the show is closing in on his attempt to break out on his own.

Mario Vazquez, who dropped out after making the final 12 last season (see "Mario Vazquez Quits 'Idol' — 'It Wasn't Right For Me' "), is nearly finished with his debut album for J Records, home to the last three "Idol" winners.

"It's coming out wonderfully," Vazquez said. "We're just finishing up. Should be done probably at the end of March."

After starting the record working with Soulshock and Karlin (Usher), the Underdogs (Fantasia) and Lester Mendez (Shakira) (see " 'Idol' Dropout Mario Vazquez Says 'Everything Is Falling Into Place' "), Mario has recently logged studio time with Ne-Yo, Scott Storch, the Luney Tunes (Don Omar) and Kerry "Krucial" Brothers (see "Alicia Keys Collaborator Kerry 'Krucial' Brothers Preps EP"). With the latter, he's talking about bringing in Alicia Keys for a cameo.

Meanwhile, his first single, "Gallery," features Baby Bash and will be released in English and Spanglish.

"I don't want to give too much away, but lyrically it's just longing love, lost love, wanting love," Vazquez said of the tune. "You can't go wrong with love."

The still-untitled album is tentatively set for a mid-summer release. Mario hopes to tour around that time.

"It's just amazing that I've had the opportunity to work with those guys," Vazquez said. "I'm excited and blessed."

Baby Bash's Good-Luck Chain From Grandma Seems To Be Working

Rapper suddenly all over the airwaves.

It's hard to turn a radio dial nowadays without stumbling on a track that has Baby Bash's signature free-flowing raps strapped to it. The 29-year-old Houston resident is featured on no less than three singles currently making the rounds on the charts, including tracks from both of his Latium Tour mates, Frankie J's "Obsession (No Es Amor)" and Natalie's "Energy." And he's still reaping the rewards from "Baby I'm Back," the first single off Super Saucy, which dropped in March.

Bash said he and "Baby I'm Back" collaborator Akon were initially hooked up by their record label but quickly found common ground. "I think we related because people don't really know how to categorize our music," Bash said recently. "Is it hip-hop or is it R&B? For us, it's just a combination of everything." The duo also knocked out "No Way Jose," a mellow, flowing tune anchored by Akon's soulful vocals.

Baby Bash, who considers himself more of "a songwriter than Mr. Rapper Guy," makes a point of sprinkling his tunes with bits of new slang, or "ear candy," as he prefers to call it.

"I don't wanna say something like 'Baby, I love you' or 'I'm crazy about you.' Everything out there is so basic," he said. "I like using slang to come up with something more fresh and hip, like 'super saucy.' It just makes people smile and puts some humor into it." The title track off the LP, which features Avant, will be the rapper's second single. "It's funny, because the mainstream will get these hip words like eight years after they first hit the streets, so I'm hoping I can bring in something fresh and quicker."

And ladies, if a man rolls up and calls you saucy, consider it a compliment. "When I talk to girls, I'll say, 'Hey, you look super saucy tonight,' and they understand the way you say it, it's a good thing," he said.

Bash also intends to play a much larger role in the making of this music video than he has in the past. "To tell you the truth, I've been disappointed with my videos so I'm definitely going to have more of an opinion on this one. I just did whatever the director said. But now I don't want my videos to look so dry."

Don't look for Bash to be pulling any ab-baring moves, à la Usher, anytime soon, though. "No, I'm not gonna take my shirt off [just to get attention]. Even though I'm in decent shape, it's all about the music, man. And who knows, I could look back and say, 'Why didn't I get naked on TV!' But as of right now, I'm happy."

Bash's latest LP, the follow-up to 2003's near-platinum Tha Smokin' Nephew, was produced by beatmaker Happy Perez (Frankie J, Natalie) and sees the rapper collaborating with other artists including Nate Dogg, Pitbull and E-40 on all but one of the 15 tracks — a strategic move for Baby Bash. "I like to have different voices and different textures on a song. I don't want people to say, 'Oh, there's Bash. There he is rapping again.' I think it's cool to vibe out with people."

Despite his mounting fame, Baby Bash can still carry on with his life as usual, and do things like pick up his own groceries. "I'm still the same cat as when I started," he said. "I don't need no bling bling. I have one gold chain that my grandmother got me a few years ago for good luck, but I don't wear a bunch of platinum and diamonds. I'd rather put that money in the bank."

'Newlyweds' star reissues latest LP with new tracks, DVD content.

Jessica Simpson takes another stab at conquering the charts this week with the release of a revamped In This Skin. The "collector's edition" repackaging includes a few new tracks, including an acoustic version of current single "With You," and a DVD with memorable moments from the first season of "Newlyweds."

Adding Southern flava of a different kind to the mix, Cee-Lo comes with his long-awaited second album, Cee-Lo Green ... Is the Soul Machine, featuring producers such as Timbaland and the Neptunes. And Baby Bash breathes new life into Tha Smokin' Nephew with a chopped and screwed edition, cashing in on a trend that's rapidly gaining momentum.

Nineties feel-good rockers Hootie & the Blowfish return with a greatest-hits album — and before anyone asks if they even had a second album, let alone enough songs for a collection, it's actually been 10 years since lead singer Darius Rucker and company hit the scene. In addition to chart-toppers such as "Hold My Hand" and "Let Her Cry," the album also contains the band's remake of "Goodbye Girl," the theme song for the television adaptation of Neil Simon's play of the same name.

And in the spirit of oldies-but-goodies revisited, '80s mainstay Cheap Trick release Essential Cheap Trick, for all those people trying to relive pop's most colorful decade.
