IRVINE, California — For people itching to hear some of this summer's most anticipated new music, the place to be this weekend was Saturday's KROQ-FM Weenie Roast y Fiesta, where the lineup was stacked with bands on the verge of releasing long-awaited new material.

The day kicked off with the Plain White T's over on the second stage, a.k.a. "stage dos" in keeping with the day's Latin theme. The former You Hear It First pick was followed by fellow YHIF alums Silversun Pickups as well as Swedish whistlers Peter, Bjorn and John and Rancid's Tim Armstrong playing solo and delivering scorching riffs under an equally scorching sun. Not to worry, though — there were free sombreros in the Fiesta Village, a place for concertgoers could snack, buy merch and cool off.

As things wound down on stage dos, KROQ darlings Tiger Army took the main stage (no witty Spanish title here). The psychobilly band's "Forever Fades Away" is the current most-requested and most-played song on the L.A. rock station, and the Bay Area trio powered through that and other tracks off their upcoming Music From Regions Beyond, due June 5.

(Check out photos of Tiger Army, Linkin Park, Korn and more from Saturday's show.)

Once their set ended, the revolving stage made the first of many 180 degree turns, revealing a plugged-in and ready to go Bravery, who also had new music to share. Although the crowd was still filing into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, the very danceable "Public Service Announcement" inspired a fiesta mood. The band followed with the new single "Time Won't Let Me Go," which hits stores Tuesday on the Bravery's new album, The Sun and the Moon.

Next up were 30 Seconds to Mars, who are no strangers to KROQ's music fests, having played KROQ's Inland Invasion show just last year. "It's weird to think that we are veterans of the KROQ shows now, because I was remembering actually sneaking backstage [at a Weenie Roast] to try and watch a band from the side of the stage a number of years ago," frontman Jared Leto recalled.

When the stage spun around for 30 Seconds to Mars' set, the audience instead found a group of folk dancers showing off traditional Latin American moves and fashions. Soon, however, Leto hit the stage ... wearing a sombrero. Always one to put on a spectacle, he also made his way deep into the crowd — twice — even singing closing number "The Kill" as he made his way up to the cheap seats.

(See Jared Leto talk about 30 Seconds to Mars being Weenie Roast "veterans.")

With the crowd now suitably amped, one of the most anticipated bands of the day, Bad Religion, made its way onstage as Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and other artists took a side-stage vantage point to watch. Among their catalog of hits, the Bad boys treated the fiesta-goers to the new single "Honest Goodbye," off July 10's New Maps of Hell. Scoring points for timeliness, the band also cranked out "Los Angeles Is Burning," calling to mind the actual L.A. wildfires from earlier this month.

While Queens of the Stone Age kept Bad Religion's energy going onstage — with new material as well, including the fresh single "Sick, Sick, Sick" — the party was really starting backstage. Those lucky enough to score backstage passes enjoyed a bar, "Guitar Hero" (appropriate, since three bands on the day's bill have songs in the game), and general people/hipster watching/ogling. Both Leto and MySpace phenomenon Tila Tequila made for popular backstage photo ops.

Following an all too sunny set by Interpol (another band stuffing CD racks on July 10) that was cut short due to equipment problems, the revolving stage spun around to reveal a surprise performance that at first caused more head-scratching than high-fiving. A 14-member a cappella group in tuxedos was putting its unique spin on Incubus' "Dig." Confusion turned to screams, however, when Incubus' Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger walked out a minute later to join in.

While the Killers had been scheduled to appear in that slot, last-minute health problems sidelined frontman Brandon Flowers. "There was another band with a lead singer named Brandon and he got sick," Boyd jokingly told MTV News. "I know what that's like, and it sucks, so they called another band with a singer named Brandon because that's kind of the theme they were going for." The power of YouTube connected Incubus and the singing group, called Ithacapella, after Boyd saw an online clip of their version of "Dig."

The last time the next band had an album out, YouTube was barely a dream. But Orange County's own Social Distortion did what they do best, playing the favorites that will appear on their greatest-hits album due June 26, complete with the new track "Far Behind."

(See Incubus' Brandon Boyd talk about the male choir that opened the band's set.)

The crowd instantly recognized the next act within the first few riffs of its opening number, going into a frenzy that lasted throughout the entire heart-pounding set. Singer Jonathan Davis even prompted a rarely seen over-the-head hand clap from a SoCal audience for the entirety of "Got the Life." New material came in the form of "Evolution," from July 31's still-untitled new album (see "Korn Are Cracking Up Over Eighth LP's 'Gothic Feel,' Munky Says").

Davis was clearly beaming backstage after the performance, which was the band's first full gig with some new members. "It was pretty much a coming-out show in the new lineup because we got [guitarist] Clint [Lowery] from Sevendust and we got [percussionist] Joey [Jordison] from Slipknot up playing with us and it's a different Korn," he said. "It sounds insane — the drums are insane, everything going on is completely different. So after tonight I think we're really, really stoked."

(See Jonathan Davis talk about Korn's "insane" set.)

Closing out the evening were locals Linkin Park. "We ... grew up listening to KROQ, and I remember coming here last year just as a fan of the show and walking around seeing the different bands," guitarist Brad Delson said backstage, "so not only to be playing it this year but to be headlining is a huge honor."

(See Brad Delson talk about Linkin Park's set.)

As the band kicked things off with "One Step Closer," the crowd showed it still had plenty energy left to cheer, sing and mosh to the most anticipated act of the day's bill. Fans hadn't forgotten any of the old songs, singing along during "Numb" and "Somewhere I Belong," among others, but they showed the same amount of enthusiasm for new tracks off the just-released Minutes to Midnight.

When Linkin Park were done, though, and the last note had finally faded away, concertgoers were confronted with something not at all new to them: an enormous traffic headache as some 16,000 people all left the same parking lot at once. Aye-yi-yi!

When an event has been around for 13 years, it's usually time to shake things up. And while Ozzfest chose to do that by going free, the Vans Warped tour opted to piece together one of its most diverse rosters to date.

The tour, which will kick off June 28 at Chula Vista, California's Coors Amphitheater, is currently slated to play 45 shows through an August 25 date in Los Angeles with a lineup that includes Coheed and Cambria, Bad Religion, New Found Glory, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Cute Is What We Aim For, Bayside and Canadian rapper K-os.

Among the other groups that will be on the road with Warped all summer are Amber Pacific, Circa Survive, Tiger Army, Escape the Fate, Hot Rod Circuit, Big D and the Kids Table, Paramore, Gallows, the Matches, the Fabulous Rudies, Meg and Dia, All Time Low, Bleed the Dream, the Unseen, Escape the Fate, Spill Canvas, Evaline, Bless the Fall, Boys Like Girls, My American Heart, Vincent Black Shadow, Throw the Fight and Pepper.

Tour founder Kevin Lyman said he had plenty of options to choose from when putting together the roster. "We received over 4,000 submissions, so in booking the tour this year I felt that a diverse lineup was in order," he said in a press release announcing the dates. "The tour has always been a place to explore and discover new music. This year's lineup has old school, emo, punk, screamo, hip-hop, more ska than you have seen in a long time and everything in between. If you're open-minded, this will be a great show."

Members of the online Warped community will get their annual shot at Internet presale tickets starting April 1, where they'll be offered a ticket and a copy of the Warped Tour double-disc compilation for $19.99.

Among the other acts scheduled to play select dates are: A Static Lullaby, the Actual, Agent Orange, Alesana, Alkaline Trio, the Almost, Anberlin, As Cities Burn, As I Lay Dying, the Automatic, Biffy Clyro, the Briefs, the Briggs, Buck O Nine, Cinematic Sunrise, the Confession, the Dear and Departed, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Envy on the Coast, the Fall of Troy, Family Force 5, Fishbone, Flogging Molly, the Fold, Funeral for a Friend, the Graduate, Haste the Day, Hawthorne Heights, Human Abstract, I Am Ghost, Madina Lake, Mayday Parade, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, New Year's Day, Norma Jean, Parkway Drive, Pennywise, Pistolita, Play Radio Play, POS, Poison the Well, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Set Your Goals, So They Say, the Starting Line, Straylight Run, Supernova, the Toasters, Underoath, the Used, Valencia, The Vandals and Yellowcard.

My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero was forced to return to the U.S. Thursday morning (January 11) due to "a sudden attack of illness," according to a spokesperson for the band. The spokesperson would not discuss Iero's condition or the nature of his malaise. The New Jersey rockers were in Tokyo, where they were expected to launch a four-gig tour, and they've since called on Drive By guitarist Todd Price to fill in for their fallen comrade. Months before users even get their hands on Apple's new iPhone, the latest game-changing gadget from the company has inspired a lawsuit. Network equipment leader Cisco Systems filed suit against Apple Inc. in San Francisco federal court Wednesday, claiming that the computer company's iPhone violates Cisco's trademark on the term "iPhone," which it has held since 2000, according to an Associated Press report. Cisco said that it has been using the name for its own Internet-enabled phones, which began shipping last spring and officially launched three weeks ago. It also said that Apple approached the company several years ago with an interest in using the name, and that the two companies have been negotiating ever since to hammer out a licensing agreement, but that talks broke down just hours before Apple boss Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone on Tuesday at the Macworld Conference. Apple has argued that it is entitled to use the name because the products are "materially" different. A spokesperson for Apple called the lawsuit "silly." ...

Aye-yi-yi!

Tone Def: Juvenile has no shortage of friends on his latest effort, Reality Check — Ludacris, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, 8Ball, Fat Joe, Bun B, Trey Songz and, more surprisingly, Brian McKnight all make appearances. But the real story behind the New Orleans rapper's release might not be the tracks themselves but what you can do with them: A special feature lets you create ring tones from any part of any song on the record. Which means, in theory, you can have a little piece of "Loose Booty" with you at all times.

Welcome Back, Carter: While Juve is letting his listeners cut up his songs, Lil Wayne has let some producers chop and screw his. Don't get these remixes confused with the chopped-and-screwed ones that came with the deluxe edition of Tha Carter, Vol. 2; those were alternate takes of songs released before that album, while these all pertain to Carter 2 and run in the same order as the LP.

New Matis? Yahoo!: Youth, the latest effort by Hasidic rapper Matthew Miller (a.k.a. Matisyahu), comes in three shapes and sizes: the standard release, produced by NYC avant-garde guru Bill Laswell and containing 13 tracks; Youth Dub, a limited disc that came with preorders of the album and features eight dub mixes plus two new songs; and the DualDisc version, with videos and behind-the-scenes treats, due at a later date.

Not-So-Public Enemy: Public Enemy have been doing the indie thing for a little while, but with their new one, they're delving even deeper into obscurity. Rebirth of a Nation is coming out on Guerrilla Funk Recordings, a label that "counters the corporate stranglehold of censorship currently plaguing the entertainment industry." Its owner, Paris — the politically conscious rapper behind "Bush Killa" — essentially co-authors the new PE record, producing it and appearing on songs like "Make It Hardcore," "Hannibal Lecture" and "Hard Truth Soldiers." MC Ren, Sister Souljah and Dead Prez also help with the Rebirth.

Making The Rounds: Do you smell a hippie? You must be near a record store, then, because they're hitting them in droves this week. Five Grateful Dead albums are getting deluxe-reissue treatment, gifting fans with bonus tracks, splendid packaging and more. Also on the bohemian front, Dead amigo David Grisman has produced Mike Compton and David Long's Stomp, while jam master John Medeski has written the liner notes for 70-year-old pianist Ran Blake's All That Is Tied.

His troupe Medeski, Martin & Wood, in the meantime, take part on the Herb Alpert mash-up record Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, also featuring Ozomatli and Thievery Corporation. There's only one stranger mash-up due this week, and that's "Rapture Riders," a collision of Blondie's "Rapture:" and the Doors' "Riders on the Storm," which surfaces on Blondie's Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision collection.

Another MMW agent, bassist Chris Wood, has his hands full with the Wood Brothers, a project pairing him with brother Oliver Wood. Oh, and speaking of brothers, they're a topic of conversation this week too: Ted Leo's brother Chris is trotting out the second effort by his Vague Angels, Let's Duke It Out at Kilkenny Katz; and Ray Davies, the Kinks leader who put out a new album a couple of weeks ago, is seeing his long-running feud with brother Dave Davies reignited this week when Dave releases his Kinked collection.

Song Titles of the Week:

"Too-Rai-Skippery-Dappery Day" and "Just Blow, Don Quixote! Blow!" from Vague Angels' Let's Duke It Out at Kilkenny Katz

Other Notables:

Bad Religion's "Live at the Palladium" and the Casualties' "Can't Stop Us" DVDs: Cobbling together live footage from Hollywood's historic punk venue as well as rare performances, TV appearances, interviews and the like, Bad Religion had every reason to promote their new visual item with a special screening and autograph session at Virgin Records in Tinsel Town. Unlike BR, the Casualties haven't been around for 20 years, but they've got plenty of punk spirit, as shown in their gritty disc, which proudly advertises footage of "riots, riots and more riots." The footage is derived from gigs in Mexico and Japan and has 20 leather-clad clips.

Mogwai's Mr. Beast and Goldfrapp's Supernature: Glasgow's Mogwai are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, and maybe not coincidentally they're breathing some new life into their younger, louder selves with Mr. Beast. Limited copies are bundled in hard-book deluxe package and come with a bonus DVD. Another Brit, singer/composer Allison Goldfrapp, has a similar game plan: The deluxe version of her latest has a DVD bristling with videos, documentary footage, a performance film and more. As the first track on her album says, "Ooh La La."

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness' Fear Is on Our Side and Revolting Cocks' Cocked and Loaded: You've heard the name, now finally you can hear the album. Instead of Spoon's Britt Daniel, who produced the band's initial EP, ILYBICD went instead with Paul Barker, who's worked with Ministry and the Revolting Cocks. Speaking of which (see where this is going?), the latest by the Cocks (led by Ministry's Al Jourgensen) attracted two Gibbies — ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers — plus Jello Biafra and members of Cheap Trick. Leave it to Al to do it up right.

New Releases:

Agency - Agency (digipak; Aeria)

Big Al Anderson - After Hours (Sony Legacy)

Architects - Revenge (SideCho)

Balli - New Blood - The D.N.A. (Black Five)

The Bamboos - Step It Up (Ubiquity)

Warren Barfield - Reach (Reunion)

Bitter:Sweet - The Mating Game (Quango)

The Black Dove - The Black Dove (Tompkins Square)

Ran Blake - All That Is Tied (digipak; Tompkins Square)

Blush - From the Falls to the Path (Rust)

Boom Boom Satellites - Full of Elevating Pleasures (Tofu)

Buzzcocks - Flat-Pack Philosophy (Cooking Vinyl)

Caedmon's Call - In the Company of Angels II - The World Will Sing (Brentwood)

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas (V2)
Buy Now: Ballad of the Broken Seas (V2)

IRVINE, California — Bad Religion's The Empire Strikes First might be best described as the ideal CD for the car ride home after seeing "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Although a bit more subtle than Michael Moore's controversial documentary (see " 'Fahrenheit 9/11': Overheated, Overstated ... And Great"), the album is a scathing attack on the Bush administration, ranging from the invasion of Iraq to the president's environmental and economic policies.

"Bad Religion didn't just start making political records, all of our records are political records," guitarist Brett Gurewitz said. "The difference on this one is that maybe we're being a little bit more specific of what we're talking about rather than speaking in general terms, and I think that's kind of dictated by the times."

The band's opinions are perhaps most obvious on the album's title track, where singer Greg Graffin addresses Bush's decision to ignore protests and invade Iraq. "Well, we spit and we cursed/ And our bleeding hearts burst," he sings. "But even 10 million souls marching in February/ Couldn't stop the worst/ Couldn't reverse."

Bad Religion address a different problem with the Iraqi invasion in "Let Them Eat War."

" 'Let Them Eat War' is basically a comment on the irony of Bush's support from the working class, being that his policies really benefit the rich and really punish the working poor," Gurewitz explained. "His strongest base seems to be support from the working poor, yet they're the ones getting shipped off to die for an unjust war."

The song, which asks the question, "Can this be what they voted for?," has gotten a strong reaction from fans, although Gurewitz doubts it will be a single.

"It's a catchy song, I would love to hear it on the radio, but I don't know if mainstream media in the current climate would play a song like that," he said. "I think that unfortunately there has been a big crackdown on dissent in this country. And that's a pity because I think dissent is one of the most patriotic, American activities imaginable."

Instead, Bad Religion are promoting "Los Angeles Is Burning," which has been near the top of influential Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM's playlist for weeks.

"It's a dystopian treatise on environmentalism and the superficiality of society," a straight-faced Gurewitz said of the song before smiling. "No, it's a cool little sing-along number about L.A. We're all from L.A. and it's a song that's about the L.A. fires on the surface and there's a political message in there, too."

Bad Religion are taking The Empire Strikes First on the road this summer via the Vans Warped Tour (see "New Found Glory, Bad Religion Get Warped; Itinerary Set"). Politics will also be prevalent offstage, where the band will promote the Rock Against Bush organization.

"I mean, I can't imagine any rock being for Bush, but I guess there are a couple bands out there," Gurewitz said.

Usher has been rocked at retail.

Selling more than 256,000 copies of Contraband in its first week out, Velvet Revolver will take Mr. Entertainment down a peg on next week's Billboard albums chart. The hit single "Slither," a ready-made fanbase and a boatload of press combined to give the band - which includes former members of Guns N' Roses and ex-Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland - a #1 placement for its debut album.

Proof that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, Contraband beat the combined first-week sales of the latest releases by both GN'R and STP (both were greatest-hits collections) by more than 41,000 copies.

Usher's Confessions shouldn't take the hit to heart. The more than 170,000 copies it sold last week has bumped the album's total sales beyond the 4 million mark. Usher may not be far from the hot seat for too long, since a re-release of the album, with at least three new songs, is on the horizon, according to producer Jermaine Dupri (see "Usher, Alicia Keys Record Duet").

Avril Lavigne's Under My Skin is showing some staying power after three weeks on the chart. Without a U.S. tour, only a smattering of radio festivals and emphasis given to just one, three-month-old single ("Don't Tell Me"), the album will slip one spot to #3, having sold more than 121,000 copies.

Another steadfast woman, country singer Gretchen Wilson, is showing similar staying power with Here for the Party, which will step back one place to #4, with more than 91,000 copies sold in its fifth week on shelves.

The #7 spot has been seeing a bit of 311 recently. Less than a year after their latest studio album, Evolver, debuted there, the reggae-inspired quintet's decade retrospective, Greatest Hits '93-'03, will follow suit, albeit with 23,000 fewer copies sold.

Perhaps fans gearing up for this year's Warped Tour, kicking off June 25, did so with the 2004 Warped Tour album. Featuring a sampling from this year's lineup — New Found Glory, NOFX, Thursday, Yellowcard and others — the 52-track LP sold more than 60,000 copies to take the #8 spot.

The remainder of next week's top 10 finds Prince's Musicology continuing its strong showing, though receding one spot to #5 (with more than 72,000 copies sold); Hoobastank's The Reason holding on to the #6 spot for the third straight week and selling more than 66,000 copies; D12's D12 World falling two spots to #9 (59,000); and Slipknot's Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) dropping five places to #10 (58,000).

Los Lonely Boys and the Black Eyed Peas continue to benefit from recent exposure. Trailed by a spate of great reviews while on their current tour, the Texas trio's self-titled debut has been on a hot streak in the last three weeks, moving from #31 to #23 to #13; while the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started," the theme to this year's NBA Finals, helped Elephunk advance seven spots to #14 with 43,000 copies sold adding to its 1.3 million total.

Even a marriage to J. Lo couldn't spark sales for Marc Anthony. The Latin singer's latest, Amar Sin Mentiras, released just days after he wed Jennifer Lopez, will place at #26, 23 spots higher than his last Spanish-language LP, 2001's Libre, though with 17,000 fewer copies.

Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand are still tolling the bell for the aggro nü-metal that once dominated radio airwaves. After more than two months in stores, both bands' albums, Good News for People Who Love Bad News at #21 and Franz Ferdinand at #43, have shown steady improvement in the last three weeks.

Other notable chart debuts include country trio SheDaisy's Sweet Right Here at #16; punk chanteuse PJ Harvey's Uh Huh Her at #29; SoCal punk vets and Warped Tour headliners Bad Religion's The Empire Strikes First at #40; the Calling's second album, Two, at #54; Punk-O-Rama Vol. 9, featuring Pennywise, Rancid and the Bouncing Souls, at #67; Sonic Youth's Sonic Nurse at #70; A--hole, the new solo album from Kiss' Gene Simmons, at #86; Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, the major-label debut by New Jersey emocore group My Chemical Romance, at #103; and turntablists the X-ecutioners' Revolutions at #118.

This week, it's all about the comeback album — from performers who used to be in massively successful bands, and those returning after falling under or off the radar.

Contraband, the title of Velvet Revolver's debut album, will no doubt be the subject of many a bad joke about the habits of certain bandmembers (ex-Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, three former members of Guns N' Roses and a former Wasted Youth). So we'll just say that Velvet Revolver releases Contraband this week.

PJ Harvey comes back on the scene after a four-year absence with Uh Huh Her. Harvey's 2000 release, Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, met with mainstream success — will the darker Uh Huh Her have similar luck?

Sonic Youth haven't made many stylistic changes to their sound on Sonic Nurse, but fans of the band will note that bassist Kim Gordon is back on the mic, singing four songs on the album.

For his second solo album (and his first since 1978), Gene Simmons strips off the makeup but stays heavy on the attitude. At least he's upfront about it: The album is called A--hole, and is filled with songs like "Whatever Turns You On."

They got knocked down and got up again, and then released five albums that went relatively unnoticed. Chumbawamba, the tub-thumping British band with a penchant for anarchist drinking songs, release UN this week.

On the Celtic beat, Irish quartet the Corrs release Borrowed Heaven, the band's first studio recording since 2000. Bad Religion may have been nodding to Star Wars by naming their new album The Empire Strikes First, but the punk group's attitude remains political, with titles like the George Orwell-inspired "Boot Stamping on a Human Face Forever." The Calling, having released Camino Palmero in 2001, take the obvious-album-title approach this week, releasing the sophomore disc Two.

Also out this week are !!!'s Louden Up Now, Etta James' Blues to the Bone and the Cowboy Junkies' One Soul Now.

A week after the compilation Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 was released, a sequel to the politically minded compilation is taking shape.

No Doubt, the Foo Fighters, Green Day, Bad Religion, the Used, Yellowcard and Flogging Molly are on board for the album, due in August, with many more artists expected to join them.

The Foo Fighters will contribute their cover of the early '80s punk song "Gas Chamber," while No Doubt donates "Comforting Lie," from their third album, 2000's Return of Saturn, to the cause. Bad Religion's contribution, "Let Them Eat War," will also appear on their new album, The Empire Strikes First, slated for release June 8. The other bands have not decided on what they'll throw into the mix.

"Gas Chamber" was originally recorded by L.A. punks the Angry Samoans, and appeared as a B-side to the Foos' 1996 CD single "Big Me." The original tune appeared on the Angry Samoans' second album, 1982's Back From Samoa.

NOFX frontman Fat Mike, who runs Fat Wreck Chords, is spearheading the series and has extended an invitation to Good Charlotte. Last week, NOFX wrapped up the first leg of the Rock Against Bush Tour with Alkaline Trio, Authority Zero and Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra.

Rock Against Bush Vol. 1, featuring contributions from Sum 41, Alkaline Trio, the Offspring, Ministry, the Ataris and New Found Glory, was released April 20 (see "Good Charlotte, Green Day, NOFX To Rock Against President Bush"). It sold nearly 20,000 copies in its first week and debuted on the new Billboard 200 albums chart at #54.
