CINCINNATI — It takes more than a little Liberty-spike-melting rain — OK, an hour-plus torrential downpour with mega-flashes of lightning — to wash out the Vans Warped Tour '09. With a crowd undeterred by the weather, the 15th annual punk extravaganza rolled up on a steamy Wednesday afternoon to the Riverbend Amphitheatre with a typically eclectic mix of old-school and new-school punk, plenty of hardcore, tons of screamo, a dash of ska, a dusting of hip-hop and ... whatever crunkcore is.

As Warped — the longest-running summer festival tour in the U.S. — continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: No genre is safe. Where in years past screamo and metalcore bubbled up as the predominant sounds of the day, this summer it's hip-hop-inspired popcore's turn, with more than half a dozen bands at the Cincy stop mixing up beats, rock guitars, party-on rhymes and yes, even vocoders.

Among the most popular proponents of the day were Boulder, Colorado's 3OH!3, whose Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte bounced around the stage like 5-Hour Energy-fueled ping-pong balls, bashing out beat-heavy anthems like "Don't Trust Me" and "Holler Til You Pass Out."

Dallas' Forever the Sickest Kids took a slightly different tack, dropping in some rap breakdowns and glitchy keyboard bits into a set that would have made crunk-rock king Lil Jon proud. Mixing David Lee Roth-style campy rock with punk attitude and a plea for bras that garnered a barrage of polka-dotted tops, singer Jonathan Cook proudly preened around the stage with his blinged-out FTSK-emblazoned microphone stand during hyped songs like "Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)" and their signature tune, "She's a Lady."

Among the Warped veterans along for the ride again were ominous Tampa punk metalers Underoath, who drew a huge throng of onstage musical admirers as they pummeled the crowd in the main pavilion with fist-pumpers like "Drowning in My Sleep." Another old skull act — making their sixth tour of duty — was political thrashers Bad Religion, who busted out nuggets like the galloping "I Want to Conquer the World" to a weary late-afternoon crowd.

Unlike last summer, when now-mega Katy Perry and ex-boyfriend Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes brought some pop smarts to the tour, the head-bobbing was a bit harder to find this time around. There was the ska bop of Big D and the Kids Table, complete with two shimmying backup singers and a three-piece horn section, and the straight-ahead Abercrombie & Fitch pop-punk of All Time Low. The Maryland quartet drew the biggest crowd of the day in the main pavilion, which was packed 6,000-strong, as the floorboards up front literally bounced up and down during sugary, pogoing shout-alongs like "Lost in Stereo." Elsewhere, the White Tie Affair mixed in some vocoder effects on "Take It Home," the Dirty Heads paid tribute to the white-guy stoner reggae of Sublime, and Utah group Meg & Dia, one of the only female-fronted acts on the day's roster, mellowed things out with some sensitive pop.

There were a few musical palette cleansers among the 60-band onslaught of mostly aggro vocalists playing to the near sell-out crowd of 12,000-plus, including second-generation country outlaw Shooter Jennings. The son of Waylon started off by kicking it "Sweet Home Alabama"-style on straw-chawin' opener "Gone to Carolina." While his laid-back good ol' boy country/ metal mash-up didn't quite fit the mix on the Skullcandy stage — where legendary Fishbone frontman Angelo Moore served as the MC and lent a sax solo to "Radio Goes Dead" — it's hard to argue with a dude who has a revolver tattooed on his forearm and an accompanying bullet on the web of his hand.

Another guy who seemed wrong to mess with was Gallows lead singer Frank Carter, who played his English old-school hardcore band's entire set in the middle of a giant circle pit. As the skies cracked open and rain flooded the parking lot, Carter and guitarist Stephen Carter stood their ground despite microphone shorts and gigantic lightning flashes, screaming the lyrics along with drenched, body-slapping, slipping-down fans.

Oh, right, and there was the crunkcore. It's easy to poke fun at Albuquerque's brokeNCYDE and their punk-hop mash-ups, which is why so many people do. With strip-club-flossin' songs like "Freaxx," "Schizophrenia" and "Get Crunk!," their mix of suburban mall-rat rap and gangsta goofiness has led to questions about whether their four MCs and a click-track shtick even belongs on the tour. But here are two things: a) they drew a gigantic crowd to the smallest stage on the concourse, b) when I heard that throng shouting the refrain from the song "Sex Toyz," I knew it was time to go home.

All Time Low are hoping that with the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards back in New York on Sunday, the artists who are in town for it will be able to celebrate in a manner befitting the city that never sleeps. Actually, the boys from Baltimore think New York should change its motto to the familiar-sounding "What happens in NYC, stays in NYC."

"New York is just one of those places where you can do ridiculous things," frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News. "It's kind of a more legit version of Vegas where you can still act like a complete fool, but also get things done."

In addition to enjoying New York for all its fun perks, Gaskarth is also a fan of hometown girl Lady Gaga, who is up for nine Moonmen and will be performing at the show. "I love Lady Gaga," he said. "The whole spectacle is amazing. I think that girl really knows what she's doing. She's insanely talented. Her voice is so good, and I'm excited to see what she does. I'm sure it will be very extravagant, and I would expect that from a Gaga performance."

Guitarist Jack Barakat took some time to imagine what the eccentric Gaga might wear onstage. "I saw a picture of her recently; she was wearing a dress that was made of, like, metal," he said. "I'd love to see something like that. That'd be really cool."

And the guys even weighed in on the night's two big battles: Eminem vs. Kanye West and Lady Gaga vs. Beyoncé. The winners of the night in their book will be Eminem and Gaga. "I'd love to see Eminem win, dude. His new record's great," Barakat said. "Since Gaga's new this year, this is her year. I think she's going to take home a bunch of awards."

Watch the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Preshow this Sunday, September 13, at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the big event, live at 9 p.m. Check out our interactive map of New York to see how the city is celebrating the VMAs all week long, and stay tuned for party coverage, concert reports, behind-the-scenes updates and more.

Who ever knew Alice was so angsty? On Tuesday (January 12), after a month of solid speculation, the track list for the upcoming soundtrack to Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" was released, and boy, there's a lot of pop/punk on there.

Avril Lavigne, All Time Low, Tokio Hotel and Pete Wentz and Mark Hoppus are just some of the acts confirmed to appear on the soundtrack, which is called Almost Alice and will hit stores March 2, according to MySpace Music.

Joining them will be the All-American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack, the Cure's Robert Smith and the Plain White T's. Lavigne's "Alice (Underground)" has been tapped as the first single and will go to radio in early February.

Over the past month, names of artists scheduled to appear on the album have been popping up. On Monday, we learned of Lavigne's involvement. Last week, Pete Wentz spilled the beans about his and Hoppus' contribution. And last month, All Time Low told MTV News they had recorded a song for the album, though, sadly, they did not get to meet Burton.

According to MySpace, Almost Alice features artists "re-imagining songs from the Disney classic" and, judging by some of the song titles ("White Rabbit," "Tea Party," "Fell Down a Hole"), well, they're not lying. Burton's take on "Alice" is scheduled to hit theaters March 5, just three days after the soundtrack is released.

The track list for Almost Alice, according to MySpace Music:

» Avril Lavigne - "Alice (Underground)"
» The All-American Rejects - "The Poison"
» Owl City - "The Technicolor Phase"
» Shinedown - "Her Name Is Alice"
» All Time Low - "Painting Flowers"
» Metro Station - "Where's My Angel"
» Tokio Hotel and Kerli - "Strange"
» 3OH!3 featuring Neon Hitch - "Follow Me Down"
» Robert Smith - "Very Good Advice"
» Mark Hoppus with Pete Wentz - "In Transit"
» Plain White T's - "Welcome to Mystery"
» Kerli - "Tea Party"
» Franz Ferdinand - "The Lobster Quadrille"
» Motion City Soundtrack - "Running Out of Time"
» Wolfmother - "Fell Down a Hole"
» Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - "White Rabbit"

Are you excited for the "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack? Will these artists match Tim Burton's vision? Let us know in the comments below or upload a video to Your.MTV.com!

Earlier this week, All Time Low took to their Twitter account to let fans know that they were logging some studio time with Mark Hoppus. It was an announcement that was greeted with much enthusiasm from the band's fans, though it wasn't exactly surprising.

After all, All Time Low recorded a song with Hoppus in the lead-up to their last album, Nothing Personal, and though the track didn't make the final cut, Hopp took it in stride, making a cameo in the band's video for the first single, "Weightless."

And days after Personal bowed at #4 on the Billboard albums chart, frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News that they definitely planned on re-teaming with Hoppus in the future, and promised that the song they had previously recorded would "definitely come out someday."

And it looks like Gaskarth is a man of his word. Because when they got together earlier this week, Hoppus and ATL weren't working on something for the follow-up to Nothing Personal. Instead, they were finishing up that mysterious track for inclusion on an equally mysterious project Hoppus is calling Trousdale Press. And that's straight from the man himself.

"We worked together on a song for their last record that they did not end up using. It's a great song, and has just been laying dormant for the past year," Hoppus told MTV News in an e-mail. "While Blink-182 has been on down time before the European tour and album recording, I've been in the studio with a bunch of friends working on a project called Trousdale Press. Alex and Jack came down yesterday and we finished up that track. It's a rocker."

Hoppus wouldn't reveal any other details about the song, or Trousdale Press (though he did mention the latter in a Tweet on Tuesday), but from the sound of things, the project is close to being finished.

"We're hoping to have the album tracking finished in the next two weeks," he wrote. "I'm sure there will be a full press thing that you'll be sent in the near future, but that's the basics of the thing."

All Time Low are having a pretty good summer. The boys from Baltimore have been spending the last month on the Bamboozle Roadshow, where they've met some of their idols, gotten love from their legions of fans and, as the band puts it, done a lot of "bro-in' down."

ATL took a break from the sweltering heat at the Philadelphia stop of the Roadshow last Sunday to talk to MTV News about the experience of traveling cross-country with Boys Like Girls, LMFAO, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Third Eye Blind (among many others). "It's been great, so much fun," lead singer Alex Gaskarth gushed. "All the bands have been hanging out, bro-in' down, as they say."

Summer festivals in America are typically dominated by one-off weekend shows, like Bonnaroo, Coachella and Lollapalooza, but a travelling show like this one creates a uniquely intimate atmosphere that the ATL guys have enjoyed. "It's festival style, so it feels like a shrunken version of the Warp Tour almost," Gaskarth said. Lead guitarist Jack Barakat cut in, "It's weird, 'cause if we don't hang out, [Third Eye Blind frontman] Stephan Jenkins gets really mad and starts yelling."

The consensus all around is that what makes this tour so much fun is the casual attitude all the headlining bands share. When asked about who's made an impact on them so far this tour, Alex was quick to answer, "The Good Charlotte guys throughout the tour have been awesome to us."

Barakat agreed, saying the Madden brothers "have been like our fathers almost."

"Our big brothers," Gaskarth countered. Finally, drummer Rian Dawson settled the friendly debate. "Uncles, we'll call it," he said. "That's somewhere in between brother and father."

Whatever the relationship between the bands, it's clear that All Time Low are having a blast on the tour.

MTV News will be hitting the Bamboozle Roadshow again this week, so check back in for more from your favorite bands on the tour.

The eclectic traveling carnival that is the Bamboozle Roadshow came to an end over the weekend in Boston, but the "bro"-bonds that were formed on tour will go on. MTV News followed the action all week, catching up with all of the acts, from pop-punkers Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte to electro-funksters LMFAO and 3OH!3.

While the acts were diverse, one common theme among the musicians was their near-unanimous tendency to geek out over fellow headliners Third Eye Blind, with many calling the band one of the biggest influences on the current generation of rock groups.

On the penultimate tour stop, at New York's Nassau Coliseum, we caught up with All Time Low singer Alex Gaskarth and listened in on his talk with one of his musical idols, Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. It turns out the two were not only fans of one another, but also formed a newfound friendship.

"A couple days [into the tour], I saw you guys play, and you guys are like this ongoing sea of energy," Jenkins told Gaskarth. "That, and you guys have the best banter, because what you do every night it's so changed up ... it's really authentic."

Gaskarth repaid the compliment, recounting how nearly every night on the Bamboozle fest, everyone met up by the stage to catch a glimpse of Third Eye Blind's set. On a few dates, Gaskarth was even lucky enough to join the band onstage for a performance of their mega-hit "Jumper."

"I think that was the craziest thing about when you guys actually did join on the tour — one of the big things was we're a different generation of bands — a lot of us were nervous," Gaskarth admitted. "I can say I was nervous when you guys first joined on," he added. "I'm a fan. It's always like kicking down that wall of 'do I approach?' "

With the Roadshow over, both bands are keeping busy. Third Eye Blind plan to record a new album, while All Time Low will be on the road through 2010.

Did you catch the Bamboozle Roadshow this year? Who was your favorite act on the lineup? Tell us in the comments!

MTV's "Silent Library" has made a name for itself by putting people (some famous, others not) in high-pressure (and usually extremely wacky) situations to test their ability to keep their reactions quiet.

Such stunts include the "Milk Man" (which saw a male contestant try to survive an attack by a breast pump), "Not Happy Hour" (a game where five contestants have to consume a disgusting scorpion bowl in 30 seconds) and the surreal "Sad Bee" (wherein an old man wearing a bee costume shocks a contestant with a taser).

Baltimore pop/punk band All Time Low are no strangers to wackiness, which is why they made for an excellent foil on the show; their episode airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. According to the band, the show is still up to its old tricks.

"We all threw up, and it was awful," All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News during the penultimate stop on the Bamboozle Roadshow in Philadelphia. The group was subject to a stunt called "The Unexpected Mexican," which saw bandmembers Gaskarth and Rian Dawson attempt to eat nachos with some rather eclectic toppings. "It was hot mustard, tartar sauce and wasabi paste," Gaskarth said. "And it was just covered. None of those sauces are even good. I started gagging the first bite."

"I think they thought, 'All Time Low is a bunch of jokesters, so we'll give them everything that is sinful and wrong,' " Dawson said.

"I threw up, and I was just watching them," guitarist Jack Barakat added.

All Time Low ended up on the show at least partially because of a Twitter campaign staged by their fans. "Apparently, our fans like to see us suffer," Gaskarth joked. "But it was fun. We had a good time."

"Silent Library" is coming off its hottest season yet. The second batch of episodes featured stars like Justin Bieber, Jim Jones, Asher Roth, Aubrey O'Day and members of We the Kings and Forever the Sickest Kids. In addition to the members of All Time Low,the third season will feature guest appearances from members of bands like NeverShoutNever, Hey Monday, Honor Society and Anarbor.

All Time Low's episode of "Silent Library" airs Tuesday (June 29) at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.

LOS ANGELES — All Time Low's last album, the snide-and-shiny Nothing Personal, debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart and thrust them from the fringes to the mainstream spotlight, so it's sort of surprising to hear them talk about the follow-up, which, from the sound of things, is shaping up to be a very different thing indeed.

"We've tried to get a little more gritty on this one, I guess, just less polished," frontman Alex Gaskarth told MTV News on the VMA white carpet. "We had a very polished sound on the last album, and for what it was, it was perfect, but this time around, we wanted to sound a little bit more like a rock band."

"[There's] less production, bells and whistles, as they call them," drummer Rian Dawson added. "And just more ... 30 guitars."

That's a lot of guitars. And perhaps realizing those statements might worry the band's longtime fans, guitarist Jack Barakat was quick to turn things back, in a jokey, decidedly ATL fashion.

"Basically, we're the new Guns N' Roses," he laughed. "This record is going to be our Chinese Democracy. [It's] never going to come out."

He's definitely kidding about that last bit; Gaskarth said the band have basically finished the still-untitled album, which is "hopefully" due in January. Working with a team that includes producers Mike Green (who worked on Paramore's All We Know Is Falling) and Matt Squire (who did their 2007 album So Wrong, It's Right), All Time Low have created an album that's equally indebted to their past and future, as evidenced by a song called "Time Bomb," which they're hoping will be the first single.

"We have no idea about that," Gaskarth said. "There's a song called 'Time Bomb' that I hope gets out there quickly, because we all really like it. But we'll just have to wait and see."

Are you looking forward to new ATL music? Let us know in the comments!

By now, you are probably aware that All Time Low's new album is called Dirty Work. But aside from the obvious Norm Macdonald connotations, you're probably not sure why the band chose that title.

And really, we weren't either. So when All Time Low stopped by the MTV newsroom on Friday, we asked them to explain the meaning behind Dirty Work, the follow-up to last year's Nothing Personal album. And, yes, Norm had plenty to do with it.

"Well, the Rolling Stones have a record called Dirty Work, and we were really inspired by that," drummer Rian Dawson laughed. "And there's a great movie called 'Dirty Work,' too, so obviously, Norm Macdonald was a big influence."

"Luckily, none of our fans know who the Rolling Stones are," guitarist Jack Barakat added. "So it's not a problem."

And to think there was a time when those same fans were worried that, thanks to the album's title — and self-described "gritty" sound — All Time Low were trading in their tighty-whities for the grave garb of serious artistes. That's definitely not the case on their new album though. As frontman Alex Gaskarth explained, the album does represent a shift for the band ... which is the real reason they decided to call the disc Dirty Work.

"I think one of the big things that came along with this album, and the process of making this album, and the whole jump to a new label, [was] a lot of anxiety. About where were we going to go, so there's a lot of that on the record," he said. "And there's also [a lot] about reaching a point in my life, personally, where things were starting to be torn apart, relationship-wise, and not having the time to be with certain people. And a lot of that's reflected in the album, feeling as though I was an island stuck in the middle of an ocean.

"[So] Dirty Work was inspired by the subject matter on the record, where it's this toss-up of being wrapped up in what we do, and having the fun and the good times, and kind of pulling that blindfold down in order to ignore the fact that other problems are crumbling around you," he continued. "You have these songs about the good times, and then there are also these songs about 'Wow, because of these good times, everything else is completely burning.' And 'dirty work' was the first ... set of words that came to mind to define what I had been doing for the past two years. It was 'dirty work.' "

So, Dirty Work — which is due early next year — finds All Time Low at a crossroads. On one hand, they're still the party-hearty goofballs you've grown to love. On the other, they're rapidly maturing musicians looking to express their newfound emotions. Both sides show up on the album, and ATL know it's a risk. But they're confident their fans will come along for the ride. After all, deep down, they're still the same band ... just, you know, a little older and wiser.

"You listen to this record and you're not going to be like, 'Oh, is that Kings of Leon?' It's not going to be like that," Dawson said. "But you are going to hopefully say, 'Wow, that's a better song than they've ever written.' "

Much of the discussion about All Time Low's upcoming Dirty Work album (which, sadly, is not named after the truly excellent Norm Macdonald film) has centered around the band's grown-up, "gritty" sound and what that means for the future of pop-punk's reigning class clowns.

So, not surprisingly, when All Time Low stopped by MTV News last week, they decided to clarify that "gritty" comment, because, to be quite honest, they're sort of getting tired of talking about it.

"When I said 'gritty,' I wouldn't say so much in terms of, like, what My Chemical Romance may have been going for on their new album ... it's definitely not anything like that," ATL frontman Alex Gaskarth said. "It's more in the sense of, the last album came out sounding very, very polished. ... We write music that really falls on the line between rock and pop and, a lot of the time, I feel like the deciding factor at the end of the day is how much production happens in post, and with the last one, we feel like maybe it leaned a little too pop for our band."

That doesn't mean, of course, that the guys in All Time Low regret making the shiny, snotty Nothing Personal, or anything of the sort. It's just that they don't feel like making it... again. Hence the big guitars, somewhat serious subject matter and rough-finish of Dirty Work.

"No regrets, it definitely was an awesome, awesome album," Gaskarth said. "It's just one of those things where, I think over the year and a half that it's been out we've sort of been able to approach it from all different angles," he explained. "When it first comes out, obviously you're really excited about it, and that's all you really pay attention to, but when you have a little time to step away and listen again, you kind of see everything you did right, but everything you'd maybe like to change next time."

Perhaps the biggest change of all? Taking a step back production-wise, a move that, for the first time on disc, has All Time Low sounding very much like a band just setting up in a room and letting it rip. You can call it maturation or you call it "gritty," and you wouldn't be wrong either way. But the guys in ATL have a very different way of describing Dirty Work.

"With Nothing Personal ... we were like, 'OK, this is our record, we can do whatever we want. We know how to record now, we know what we want.' And so we threw everything that we thought was, like, 'great production' against the wall," drummer Rian Dawson said. "And it sounded great, but at the end of the day, we were kind of like, 'This kind of sounds like. ... '

" 'It sounds like unicorn poop,' " Gaskarth added.

And judging by everything All Time Low are saying, Dirty Work is shaping up to be the very definition of an "anti-unicorn poop" album. That's certainly better than calling it "gritty," right?

Are you looking forward to new ATL music? Let us know in the comments!
